Best Buffet In Las Vegas.

I like your attitude. My question is, now that you can take your parents to Indian restaurants, can you prevent them from throwing onion bhajis at each other?

Best Buffet In Las Vegas.

Some like buffet, some like Jimmy Buffet. I'm the latter. It's just a matter of personal preference.

Besides, the question should have been "What is your 'favorite' buffet in Vegas?"

New Places to try in Boulder/Denver & surrounding areas

Actually it was Matthew Jansen who made the statement about Boulderites eating lentil mush. Something about how there were no decent restaurants until the influx of east and west coast urbanites. And he graciously saved us with his arrival and the opening of Mateo. He seemed to forget about John Platt, John Bizzarro, Mark Monette, James Mazzio, etc. etc. Having been in Boulder since 1968 I've seen great changes but I remember eating pretty damn well even before Mateo.

Claire, I seem to recall reading that Kelly Kingsford eventually landed at Radda Trattoria but I can't vouch for that. Quite honestly, since Matthew Jansen's over the top arrogant remarks about Boulder food in last year's New York Times article, I can't bring myself to eat at either of his restaurants. That's just the way I am!

New Places to try in Boulder/Denver & surrounding areas

Claire, there's a new Nepalese restaurant on Table Mesa in the space originally occupied by Rudi's many year's ago. Since then, that space has seen several restaurants come and go. The owners of this Nepalese place are the former manager and the former chef from Narayan's in the Meadows.

Actually, does not bode well. Although I thought that the food at Narayan's was OK, the service and management was horrific. I ordered take-out several times and each order was either wrong or missing something. Actually, wherever I take out food these days, I make a point of checking it item by item. Narayan's was absolutley the worst at being accurate. Since I live in the mountains, there's no quick run back to the restaurant for a fix. My last time and I mean my LAST time there, I was in a rush and didn't do my usual check. Got home and they had *forgotten* to include the naan. I was not happy, called and let them know and that was my last association with them. Since the same inept people now own the new place, I doubt that I'll try it.

Just had a dynamite dinner again at Brasserie 1010. I used to think that Kelly Kingford made the absolute best bouillabaise but the current chef is better! New things on the menu, too. Mobbed on Thursday night but worth the wait.

Vegas black/red -- value husband vs. first time let's see

You're right about the wine, but honestly, I never go to a Thai restaurant thinking about the wine list! Singha is my drink of choice.

QSR=Quick Serve Restaurant. That's the euphemism of how franchises/chains such as Quiznos, Qdoba, Pei Wei, etc. like to refer to themselves these days rather than "fast food." Gives them the illusion that they are somehow superior to McDonald's & Burger King. They are all crap as far as I'm concerned.

I like Lotus of Siam but I'm not part of the cult following that gets orgasmic over the place. Consistently good and the Northern menu is not your usual Thai selection.

Vegas black/red -- value husband vs. first time let's see

Based upon another post, you seem to be on a quest for under $20 entrees! Worthy objective. But tough on the Vegas strip unless you want to settle for coffee shop or QSR type places. The appetizers at most of the celebrity chef/hotel joints hover around $20 so you might want to try sitting in the bars and doing starters rather than main courses. The other option is to head off strip to the Thai and other Asian places that have been reviewed here.

Crab Month at Two Denver Restaurants

Make that three restaurants. Had dinner last Friday at Braun's before the Nuggets game and our server was a real CRAB! Must have been having a bad night because her surly index was off the chart.

Best house-made pasta in Vegas?

I'll provide a resounding second to the rec for the Pasta Shop. Never been disappointed, especially with the specials when available. Part of the appeal for me is the experience. Sometimes staffed by only the chef and one server, this can be very entertaining. On one visit I thought that I was living a Saturday Night Live sketch with pots & pans banging in the kitchen, the server walking back there, loud voices and yelling, the server coming back to the dining room, etc. It was wonderful. A nice change from the sterile, celebrity chef joints on the strip.

Farewell, Mayflower Cuisinier

I'm really sorry to hear this! While the hordes flocked to the celebrity chef places on the strip, I always found refuge while in Vegas on business at Mayflower. Quiet & comfortable with fantastic food and attentive service.

But, glad to hear that Ming See Woo will still be cooking. Where and what is the Palazzo?

Cocktails for Non Alcohol lovers

Even though you probably have done this, I'd suggest reinforcing the fact that there's no shame in not drinking alcohol if you don't like it. I have friends who don't feel diminished and take no grief because they don't drink. Hell, there's times when I would rather have club soda with lime rather than Scotch. There's also nothing wrong is sipping a decent glass of wine if he wants "something" that looks authentic.

Guy Savoy, Las Vegas and wine pairings

I can't speak specifically for Guy Savoy because I think the prices are so outrageous as to be insulting. When someplace makes Alain Ducasse look reasonable, that's a problem!

But, at other restaurants, if there are not pairings specifically offered, I just ask the sommelier to make the recs. I've found that this tactic works well plus I can discuss a few choices for each course.

Good luck!

"Dude, this ain't Macallan."

A similar thing happend to me in New York (not NYC.) Ordered a Talkisker, neat, after dinner. What showed up was definitely a blend. Not too difficult not to recognize the smoke in Talisker. Server (who didn't speak much English) took it back and then brought out the Talisker bottle for a new pour. That was better!

New Places to try in Boulder/Denver & surrounding areas

Claire, You're always such a great source of info! I didn't realize that James Mazzio was "back" and chef at Via. This place now jumps to the absolute top of my go-to list. I still believe that 15 Degrees was one of the finest places to ever inhabit Boulder.

I'll be interested in reading your impression of Organic Orbit. The place got some hype in the Camera but I was not blown over by it. Don't get me wrong, our dinners were good but nothing really unique.

Cocktail obsessives

Here's one you won't find any books. The Jack Brady Special:

Jigger of VO
Jigger of Southern Comfort
Jigger of Wild Turkey
Jigger of Galliano
Colored with Coke.

Used to drink these in Idaho Springs back in 1971 when I worked as a miner digging the Straight Creek Tunnel (Eisenhower Tunnel.) This drink was invented by our crew boss, Jack Brady and we'd celebrate the end of the work week by lifting several of these babies. After two or three, we'd all be reciting the miner's mantra: "I'm a miner, mucker, mean motherf****r, wanna fight?" Often we did. I sure miss those good old days.

Posting glitch

I'm new and have posted a few messages. When I click the "post" button, the system churns and then freezes and I need to exit IE7 through Task Manager. When I come back to the site, my messages are posted. Is there something I'm doing that's wrong that's causing IE7 and Chowhound to freeze?

Thanks.

New Places to try in Boulder/Denver & surrounding areas

Well, what's new to you might be old to me since you didn't give any point of reference to your time frame. Or a list of the places you've tried and with whcih you are bored. Here's some suggestions:

Pupusas Sabor Hispano on north Broadway.
Restaurant 4580 just a little past Pupusas.
Organic Orbit also in the same area.
Scotch Corner at Broadway & Walnut. They have threatened to offer haggis but I haven't seen it on the menu.
Tu Lien in Louisville. My favorite Vietnamese in the area.
Aji.
Carelli's at 30th & Baseline. Southern Italian comfort food with great atmosphere.
Marcel's Chocolate Room in Louisville. Her truffles make a great meal.
Westfalen Hof in Coal Creek Canyon. Authentic German except for the dearth of pork dishes. A crime! But excellent German beer on tap.

Boulderites: Colterra or Black Cat for anniversary dinner?

Bradford Heap is the chef/owner of Colterra. Formerly the chef/partner at Full Moon Grille and Chautauqua Dining Hall. Colterra is in Niwot and the food is Mediterranean with Bradford's unique mark added. Great place and worth a try.
