Buffa's offering Chicago style deep dish pizza
I did not hit it this week but plan on doing so next week.
Apparently Buffa's on Esplanade was offering Chicago style deep dish pizza as a special this week on Wednesday and Thursday. My buddy hit it today and said it was excellent and spot on.
I always get nervous when I hear someone is doing "Chicago style" down here but he said it was legit with the sauce on top and tons of ingredients.
He asked and they said they would have it as a special next week on either Wednesday or Thursday again. They had already sold out of pepperoni and he was there at 1pm.
I am going to hit it for myself to see if it is legit!
"Rules" at Central Grocery
i miss Progress because they would create some different things that weren't really a Muff but were to my tastes. Turkey, Ham, Salami, the cheeses and the olive salad. LOVED IT.
Another rehearsal dinner question
Atchafalaya would be excellent as well! great bar, great people, interesting food, cool cocktails, wonderful vibe all around!
Another rehearsal dinner question
this question comes up a ton and once again I have to chime in because my memories of this evening are so fond. we were able to book out all of casamento's. we had close to 60 guests. it might be a little more casual than what you are looking for and they only have beer and wine. however, they have a great oyster bar, great gumbo, and it was a laid back fun "only in new orleans" type of experience. had to sell them on the idea as they do not usually do private parties on the day of the week we needed but we broke it down by overall total cost and then i guess they realized it was a wise move. to have the whole place with a guy shucking fresh oysters, ice cold abita's flowing and fresh friend oysters, trout and shrimp was amazing! everyone had gumbo as well and fried crab claws. people hung at the oyster bar and there was no assigned seating you just went wherever you pleased! some jokesters snuck down to mr.s mae's for rounds of shots. it was a incredibly fun night. since you were going to be on napoleon i thought you might be close.

go right from the airport to the Galley on Metairie Rd or Big Fisherman/Fisherman's Cove on Williams Blvd in Kenner.

HELP! Need a rehearsal dinner suggestion!
60 guest under a 100 per person is how much? 3-4K? that's 60 guests at 50 per head. here a suggestion. we did it and it went off with flying colors. casamento's on magazine (near Magazine and Napoleon) let us book out the whole place. abita beers, oyster bar, gumbo, crab claws, fried seafood or fried seafood sandwiches. it was awesome and it was a total New Orleans feel. you have to talk them into it though! they usually do not do this. i sold them on the idea. told them to have custoerms til 7:30pm. we get there at 7:30 sharp and we spend 3000 minimum. it worked! it was also a memorable experience that our guests loved. betyter yet, we cabed to the columns hotel before dinner and after dinner for drinks then we high tailed it to tipitina's and lebon temp roule for dancing the night away at both! might be nice for your guests to see more than the french quarter! check it out. it rocked, it was different and it was new orleans through and through. drop a few hundred more and you can get a brass band to come do a walk through and bust out a 15 minute set at the end of the meal! talk about a party!
Looking for the Soul of New Orleans
if you want the bomb boiled seafood raw oyster real experience head to sal's seafood on the west bank. barataria blvd. google it.

you need to get out of the quarter for this. do you have a rental car? i've got 2-3 really good suggestions but they are all about 15 min from FQ. those are for the most part all tourists traps with bad food.
Looking for the Soul of New Orleans
Harbor is good but Sal's is better and a better experience.
Looking for the Soul of New Orleans
Get in your car or rental car and head over to the Westbank and get off of Pontchartrain Hgwy at Barataria. Take a left. Watch for Sal's Seafood. Pull in. Order any boiled seafood they have available, some oysters, some crab dip, potato's, beers. If you want a slice of real life and soul and want to be "far away from tourists" and "into the grime" as you say then this is what you are really looking for. This is a fully functional seafood shack in all it's glory. Not fancy. Hardcore seafood shack with deli type carryout order area and a minimal dining room and bar with boiled seafood dumped out on newspapers. A newspaper review said "bare bones seafood gluttony." This is a slice of Louisiana you can't get in the Quarter or even really Uptown.

Gourmet cheese shoppe?
i had a pretty rough encounter of just rudeness when picking up a sandwich once. sandwich was awesome but the snotty vibe has prevented a return.
Fried pickles
Bear's in Mandeville has awesome fried pickles but again probably too far for casual visitor. their roast beef is out of this world too!
Midway
yeah, price doesn't seem like an issue. not doing a takeout order put me off. sorry, i know there is a way you want people to experience your pizzas but this would of been customer likes to get a pizza to take out.....that is after all one of the joys of pizza. and for the poster who will tell me that they don't care about whether or not people like their rules well that is great for them! i felt midway's crust was lacking...just a tasteless hunk of dough...the sauce seemed like straight up tomato paste with little else added to it, the cheese seemed like the cheeper variety that tastes like rubber and the whole thing could have used 4-5 more minutes in the oven! damn shame! i am sure i would love ancora from what i have been told and the pics i have seen look great....too bad for me and them!
Midway
what the hell is "New Orleans-style deep dish pizza?" There really is no such thing. There is no style really of New Orleans pizza.......and no, it is not damn fine. It is simply ok-relative to decent gas station pizza. however, that is simply my opinion. seems to be the same of other posters on here though too....
Midway
Finally had Midway today. Very weak. I would say C-. Not very good at all. Just OK. Wouldn't pass for Chicago pizza. People were very nice though. Just not a pizza I would crave or care to have again. Simply not worth the calories.

whatever to both of you! vincents is seafood heavy and very rich. elaborate on why vincent's is "terrible" all items fresh and made on-site. it is not a super high end or a gourmet experience....it is a good ole creole italian stalwart!!!!! corn and crab bisque forever!!!!!!

the biloxi schooner right near the beau rivage has great diner food and po-boys. excellent burger as well with a unique bun. big pile of fried crab claws with two sauces makes a great appetizer...open faced roast beef sandwich pretty tasty!!!! there is a variety of vietnamese PHO places as well. For high end Mary Mahoney's across from the Beau is a nice historical place with good steaks and pasta's...at the Beau Rivage their steakhouse BR Prime is incredible. Get the lump crabmeat remoulade for sure!!!! the service, the specials, the sides, the atmosphere, the preparation, etc. BR Prime is top notch! Another great local joint is Bootlegger's Pizza near the air force base. Bootleggers is really good chicago style suburban thin crust. everybody thinks chicago only has thick crust but that is BS! Chicago suburbs are loaded with places with thin crust pizza that cut it into strips across turns it 90 degrees and cuts across the strips making squares and triangles and rectangles of pizza. the lady who owns it is from wisconsin but i think she spent time working in some suburban pizza joints outside of chicago. Good luck!
Alternative to Galatoire's for lunch on Friday?
do what you need to do to get the galatoire's table. no substitute for that experience, not even close cause there is only one Galatorie's! Make it a point to get there early to wait in line. it won't be that bad.
Midway
Tully's did close. He is going to be serving his pizza out of Hurricane's sports bar on Veteran's. Very reminscent of Tower of Pizza which I happen to love!

you are missing an absolute gem in that area...Vincent's. Vincents on St. Charles is creole italian and it a do not stop, do not pass go, do not collect $200 type of place. it is wonderful! even the garlic bread is killer....even the house salad that comes with all entrees is wonderful if you get the homeade bleu cheese vinagrette. you have to try the artichoke vincent appetizer...5-6 artichoke heart sections deep friend and served on a bed of tarragon lemon cream sauce with lump crabmeat, diced shrimp, diced red and green peppers, and sliced green onions. the taste and the textures are to die for! share one bowl of the corn and crabmeat bisque and you will be in heaven! split the stuffed chicken dinner but add a house salad so you both will have the salad and get the blue cheese vinagrette! the stuffed chicken is a large chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto , artichokes and provolone...breaded and fried, cut in hunks and topped with a sweet and savory mushroom marsala sauce that is pipping hot! there you go. one appetizer, share a soup, slit the stuffed chicken, add an extra salad......you will be full and you will get to taste several different delicious items from the menu...still hungry or do you have to have red sauce??? order one link of italian sausage with the aritchoke vincent appetizer. goes great with beeer and you can dip the garlic bread in the left over red sauce. to finish????? why double espresso and homeade limoncello gelato of course!!!!!!!!!!!! TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. YOU WILL HAD LIVED A WONDERFUL LIFE AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE!!!!!! ha ha ha ha.....i love Vincent's!!!!!
Midway
Lou Malnati's in Chicago is incredible! As is Due's, Uno's, Gino's East and a few other deep dish joints. I have yet to try Midway but I am excited! I had one friend order from there and the person on the phone told him it would be 15-20 minutes and my friend said "really?" the guy on the phone said "did you expect it to be a shorter wait time?" my buddy said "no, usually ordering a deep dish pizza is a 45-60 minute deal to cook it all the way through!" i am certainly curious and look forward to trying it soon. if anyone has pics please post!
Why does everyone hate Jacques-imo's
judging by the lines and wait times i would say that EVERYONE does not hate Jacques-Imo's!!!!! Maybe a few snobby people don't really like it or do not appreciate the kitsch but most people I know LOVE Jacques-imo' and certainly any guests from out of town that I have brought there adored the place! It's always been a great time in my book.

Dragos in New Orleans

it sounds like you had the absolute evening from hell at drago's at the hilton sometimes and it is very rare when absolutely everything can go bad during a dinner but it sometimes does happen. i am not making excuses for drago's at the hilton but i have had a few times in my life experiences that were as awful as what you describe. Not at Drago's Hilton but I have had that really crazy almost one in a million garbage night......an off night in the kitchen, some bad managers, overcooked food, undercooked food, rancid food, hair in the food, the lack of care on behalf of all employees, items on the menu not coming out on the dish, overcharges added on, a few messed up drinks, throw in a apathetic server and yes you will never want to go back. It is almost like the stars have to align to have such an overall bad experience.
i ate at drago's in metairie last friday night as i had a friend in town who is an oyster and lobster freak lover. the raw oysters were plump, salty, cold, and delicious. the char grilled oysters were juicy and temperature hot and succulent. they were a little small but that is only because cooking any kind of seafood will shrink it down a bit because of the high water content. salad was lackluster boring not worth it come with the meal salad. i should have paid 4 bucks and got a soup instead....lobster was huge, tender, cooked perfectly, and priced extremely well considering how far they travel to get here! my point is, give the metairie location a shot. sit at the bar. order a dozen raw and a dozen charbroiled. if you enjoy keep on going!!!!!!!! good luck.
