Why we should embrace fine dining - excellent piece in Eatocracy

"Bespoke" is fine if you're ordering a Rolls Royce or a Yacht, not so much a cocktail.

Ah finally someone that sees it from our point of view. We skip the linens and fine china, but we buy absolutely anything we want prepare, have an excellent meal, and wind up saving hundreds of dollars a weekend doing it.

I'd be happy to. Trying to convince someone that they "deserve" that glass of Krug and plate of foie gras, hoping to see some famous people is very self serving to the business owner. What's so great about seeing a famous person? I never understood the appeal. If you're rich, rich and famous, congratulations and go ahead and have at that Krug and foie gras. Trying to convince someone that has to finance the whole occasion on their credit card just rubs me the wrong way. I see it all the time, people "deserve" that nice new car, that expensive vacation, those designer clothes. Before you know it they have a mountain of debt, the creditors are calling, and all of a sudden all those "deserved" moments don't seem so great when you get the foreclosure notice in the mail.

Most of the rich people I know would rather fly under the radar and have no one else know about their wealth. A lot of the people that look the part are the ones financing the fantasy on their credit cards. Of course this isn't a blanket statement and not always the case, those multi million dollar homes can't be had with an AMEX card.

Crab meat from the USA, where to buy online?

Thank you, I should have clarified, I was hoping someone had first hand experience with an online source. I found plenty using google, hence my hoping one had a recommendation rather than a google search result.

Crab meat from the USA, where to buy online?

Costco, local fish monger, local grocery stores, all of them sell Asian crab meat. Anyone have a good online source for crab meat from the USA?

Dip ideas for vegetable tray other than ranch?

Hummus or guacamole for healthy. Blue Cheese dressing for something other than ranch. To be a little healthier you can make your own dip using low fat sour cream and stir in a pack of ranch seasoning. Might not be super chow worthy, but it works.

I have a food crush on THIS U.S. city:

For us it's the Northern Virginia area, just outside of DC. Lots and lots of inexpensive ethnic restaurants and we visit at least 3 times a year, usually more.

What's the best "green" or environmentally friendly dishwashing liquid you've used?

I really like the Costco brand soap. Works very well and doesn't leave your hands smelling awful like the non green name brand soaps.

Isn't it time we stopped permitting certain topics?

I agree with the tipping threads, useless and always go in the same direction.

Tipping on Brown Rice

Wow, a whole thread on whether someone should tip an extra $0.60-$0.80. I thought this was an April Fool's joke until I looked at the posted date.

Costco Food Finds- 1st quarter 2013

Just found Kirkland Greek Yogurt, $7 for two big containers. It's not stiff like fage, mosr the consistency of sour cream. Really liked it.

Local Honey in Pittsburgh?

Wanted to stir up a new thread and see if anyone has any new recs? I'm looking for small quantities (1-2 pounds at a time) of raw honey. Whole Foods has their store brand for $8/lb along with a few other brands.

Character Dining at Disney World (and other dining recommendations)

Easily the best food we had in Disney was the buffet, Boma, at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. The other buffets we went to were pretty standard run of the mill buffet food, not bad, but not great. The kids had a good time at Chef Mickey, the food was fine but nothing special. Boma had food with actual flavor and spice to it whereas most of the other buffets try to cater to the masses and nothing is overly spiced or out of the ordinary. My gf and I actually ate there three times for dinner we enjoyed it so much. My sister's favorite was 'Ohana because the kids had so much fun there. Neither are on your list though.

Calling all salmon lovers - king or sockeye?

I like king the best, but at $25/lb I might buy it once a year. My normal salmon is wild sockeye from Costco, $9/lb sold in 3 pound bags. I end up smoking most of it.

Katana Sushi, all you can eat, Pittsburgh

Katana Sushi has all you can eat Sushi Sun-Thursday for lunch or dinner. We went today and really enjoyed it. It was $24 and we really enjoyed everything we had. You could even get sashimi! No extra rice like some places try to do with all you can eat. You ordered on a printed menu, not a buffet. They're located at the top of West Liberty Ave across from the Nissan dealership.

How do you nicely tell a server that they have severely bad breath?

Really? He was sitting at the counter presumably with other patrons near by. Someone with personal space issues doesn't sit at the counter.

I agree with Bagelman. A server with offensive odors hurts the owner's livelihood. Why is it ok for the owner to take a ding in revenue but not the employee?

Iodized salt for brining?

I've seen some brines that say don't use iodized salt. Any reason why? Costco sells a box of iodized salt for $0.99 that I'd really rather use for brines, but not if it's going to give an off flavor.

Ina Garten Frozen Dinners?

You have to realize, she doesn't socialize with people like you and me. I highly doubt her friends will snub her because she's making even more money now. In her circles making more money is the thing to do, doesn't matter that you made it selling stuff via Walmart. Do you think the Walton's friends think they're not a class act because they own Walmart?

I know steel cut oatmeal takes time and a little more effort to make.

Tastier as compared to what? Instant? I usually make my steel cut oats first thing Sunday morning while I'm cooking other things for the week. I make a big batch and freeze it into breakfast sized containers. I don't think the effort is any more, it just takes longer to cook is all.

No call-in orders after x time?

Not sure what the point of your question is fldhkybnva? If the place closes at 5pm and you place your order at 455 pm, isn't it obvious what Bacardi says takes place is happening an hour or so before closing time? Not sure how it matters if it's 4:55, 5:55 or 11:55, if it's 5 minutes before closing time, it's 5 minutes before closing time.

Now if you mean you place your order at 4:55 pm and they close at 10pm, then no, they're not doing all the work Bacardi says at the time you place your 4:55 pm order.

No call-in orders after x time?

I think Bicardi sums it up best. You'll get those that think restaurants should bend to every customers wishes, but that doesn't always work so well from a business stand point. Say closing time is 10 pm, you call in a small order at 9:50, promise to be there before 10pm. On your way over you get a flat tire, or the baby pukes and needs a new outfit etc etc, now the restaurant either waits until you make it in or has to throw away the food. Your $10 order may very well end up costing the restaurant more than $10 if you run late. Not to mention no one likes staying late at work. I can guarntee you the vast majority of employees would be happy to know they will be going home 10 pm EVERY night on the dot. Happy employees are just as important as happy customers.

Are garbage disposals standard?

I like having a garbage disposal and I assure you I won't be buying any timeshares. I don't put large pieces of food down the garbage disposal that could just as easily go in the trash. Think making a big pot of something messy, let the pan soak overnight. Now, you have a lot of food bits floating around in the water. Just dump it all it out with the disposal running and no stuffed up drain or strainer.
