Vegetarian/Vegetable Tasting Menu

Not a tasting menu, but a true vegetarian restaurant (would be vegan, but they do use honey) and not in a trendy neighborhood: Soul Vegetarian East. Here's a link to the TRibune's MetroMix entry:

Chicago restaurants with free parking?

I can think of three restaurants with free parking. They are all in Hyde Park. There is only one theater there, but I highly recommend it: The Court Theatre--it alsoi has free parking:

The restaurants are: La Petit Follie http:lapetitfollie.com

Miller's Pub might be what you"re looking for. Although it's right next door to the Palmer House, it's not touristy;. probably about half of the customers are people who work in the loop.

Soft-shelled crabs?

I've seen them on the menu at Le Bouchon: http://www.dirksfish.com/http:/ and they're probably available at many other high end restaurants.

If you're thinking of cooking the at home Dirk's Fish: http://www.dirksfish.com/http:/ is sure to have them.

Any restaurants in Chicago that will cook fish I catch myself?

Actually,I don't think it's a good idea to eat Lake Michigan fish; sadly the lake is fairly badly polluted with mercury and other heavy metals. Not too far out of town, in Wisconsin and Michigan, there are small lakes where there is good fishing, but not being a fisherman, I can't recommend any specific ones. Lake Michigan is good for boating and swimming--current water temperature is in the 60's.

Visiting chicago at the end of the month- any advice?

You probably don't want to just stay in the pricey neighborhood of your hotel. Two distinctive and moderately priced restaurants in the Loop are the Osasis Cafe and Heaven on Seven.

The Oasis is not like any other restaurant I know. Its in the Loop, located at the back of the Jewelers Mall. The furnishing and decor are functional; the cuisine is Lebanese and excellent. See Metromix:

http://chicago.metromix.com/restaurants/middle_eastern

Just a block north of the Oasis is the original Heaven on Seven--on the 7th floor of an office building. It has several branches, but the original is the best. See its web site:

http://www.heavenonseven.com/

Neither of them serve dinner and are very crowded at noon, but the crowd will have thinned out by 1pm It's best to go either of them at 1pm or so.

For lunch you might like the Oasis Cafe in the Loop. It isn't like any other restaurant I know; its excellent middle eastern cuisine more than compensates for is utilitarian ambience. Check out:

Near the University of Chicago

57th St and 55th St and the sort of streets I think you are looking for. 57th St. is probably the one with the most popular with students: Edwardo's, (mainly pizza and pasta) The Medici (the biggest with a varied menu and a roof garden) Noodles (Thai) all in the same block between Kimbark and Kenwood, ad 2 blocks fuSrther east, the Salonica (Greek). My favorite of the the The Medici. On 55th St. there are several Asian restaurants in the blocks east of the viaduct, Seoul Corea, Siam, Snails Thai, and also Manny's (deli). La Petite Folie is on the other side of the viaduct in the 55th St Shopping Center.

SF CH coming to Chicago Oct 23-25, 2009 some questions?

Two restaurants near the Museum of Science and Industry:

The Medidi is a fairly short walk from the museum. It's a University of Chicago hangout and has a varied menu that includes thin crust bad pan pizza.

http://www.medici57.com/

The Cedars of Lebanon is a longer walk (about a mile). It's menu has a good variety of middle eastern food.

ISO downtown steakhouse w/ bar seating for solo traveller lunch

You might like Miller's where there is almost always plenty of bar seating. Even though it's next-door to the Palmer House it's not particularly touristy. It's something of a sports bar and very Chicago--the lunch crowd is mainly made of of people who work in the Loop. The steaks and hamburgers are good, but so are the ribs, fish and chips, and Greek specialities.

Several questions for ChiChows from SFHound, please

Two places for lunch near the Art Institute;

Heaven on Seven (Wabash) on the seventh floor of an office building has cajun and creole food. My favorite, which I almost always order there, is oyste po' boy. It's very crowded at noon, so it's best to go there at 1 or later. There are other locations, but this is the original.

http://www.heavenonseven.com

Oasis Cafe is an unprepossessing place at the back of a jewelry emporium on Wabash serving excellent authentic middle eastern food cafeteria style.

Any can't miss lunch spots downtown?

Heaven on Seven for cancun and creole cooking. Of its 3 locations the original one, on the 7th floor of a downtown office building (right across the street from the former Marshall Fields), is the best. It's extremely crowded at noon, so go there around 1.

Casual recs in downtown area

Two places that I think you might like are Heaven on Seven and Manny's.

At Heaven on Seven the cuisine is creolecajun and the atmosphere is casual. It has several locations, but the best, I think, is the original. It's on the 7th floor of a downtown office building at 1141 S. Wabash. its very crowded at noon, so it's best to go there at 1 or later.

Manny's a little south of the loop at 1141 S Jefferson is a very big deli, but it, there, too, it's better to miss the noon rush.

Both have web sites:
