Source for Scrapple?

Thanks. Got some yesterday.

Source for Scrapple?

Does anyone know of a store that sells scrapple in Seattle? I have a hankering for it and will make it from scratch if I have to but would love to find some locally. Any ideas?

Seville (bitter) orange in Seattle?

Sosio's in Pike Place Market has them right now. I don't know how long as they tend to run out quickly

Where to buy fresh, not pre-frozen, duck breast

Uwajimaya just about always has fresh duck breast

Any source of leaf lard in Seattle

Samish Bay Cheese and Olsen Farms generally have it as well. Both are at UD and other farmers markets.

Farmers' market at Pike Place

Pasqualina passed years ago. I still expect to see her. Her son Mike and his wife Shelley left Pike Place years ago because tourists don't buy produce. You can find them at West Seattle and Columbia City farmers markets as Whistling Train Farm

Looking for fresh sardines in and around Bellevue.

Uwajimaya had some yesterday at their ID location. May possibly have some at their Bellevue store.

plantains in Bellevue?

You should be able to find them at Uwajimaya.

Best Mexican in Tri-Cities?

Inca is very good. I know you said besides taco trucks but had to mention a taco truck roughly in that stretch of Clearwater that's excellent as well.

Where Are the Best Wine Shops in Seattle or Eastside?

In my experience, Pike and Western has the most knowledgeable, passionate staff and good selection of top notch wines at all price points:

Esquin would be my second choice, very large inventory and very good prices:

McCarthy & Schiering has a great reputation by I don't get to their shops very often, not in the last 10 years at least. But excellent.

Dining on Amtrak's Empire Builder

I've ridden the Empire Builder twice in the last year and a half and loved the trip each time. The food is by no means chowish but compared to airline food is way better.

Best time for picking kraut cabbage in the Seattle area?

I'm with you. I wait until late September here in SEA. Never had a problem with the fermentation in cooler weather. The room where I keep the crock is generally in the 60s, 50s in winter. Fermentation is usually over in a couple weeks though I like to let it continue curing for 4-6 weeks total to get good and sour.

Chervil in SEA?

Sosio's in Pike Place Market will sell it by the box as they don't normally stock it. They need at least 24 hrs notice. I forget what I paid for one a couple years ago. It does turn up in some groceries in the section with fresh herbs in plastic cartons. I've seen it at Uwajimaya and Metropolitan Market. But it's not consistently in stock anywhere I've seen it.

Fresh figs in Seattle - source?

Sosio's in Pike Place Market had both green and black figs two weeks ago and pretty consistently are in stock this time of year. Never seen them at the UD farmers market. They're not cultivated locally in any marketable quantity that I'm aware of even though SEA is home to random fig trees in the neighborhoods.

Cleveland Report

You ARE lucky. I'd trade one of the WSM lamb & goat stalls plus one sausage maker for the flying fish nitwits at our Pike Place market, which is pretty cool otherwise.

Cleveland Report

Had a short visit to Cleveland last week to visit family.

Monday night had a thoroughly mediocre lavender chicken at The Grovewood. My folks are regulars here and I've had great meals on previous visits but what would have been a very nice dish (boneless chicken breasts and a really nice polenta) was drenched in a soy-based sauce. Would have been better with just a drizzle.

Tuesday had a delightful meal at Anatolia Cafe which I'd hoped to get to on previous visits. I had the mixed grill while others at the table had the stuffed eggplant, lamb saute, and vegetarian saute. All were fabulous. I would highly recommend this place to CLE hounds who haven't tried it.

Wednesday, I did my Cleveburg shopping trifecta: started at the West Side Market and picked up sweet Hungarian and fresh Slovenian sausage and salad greens for dinner at my brother's in Lakewood. The on to The Sausage Shoppe (and thank you again, mrnyc, for introducing me to this little treasure!) for head cheese, garlic summer sausage, Wurzburger, and 5 different brats all of which I shipped home in SEA which I'll enjoy tonight with the last of my home-cured sauerkraut. Finally hit Raddell's on E 152nd for more fresh Slovenian, fresh Polish, fresh Lithuanian, hot Hungarian, smoked Hungarian and smoked Slovenian. I believe this place recently changed hands; if so, they haven't missed a beat.

Hoping to hit CLE again in February when Boulez conducts the home town band. Thank you to everyone whose posts over the years keep me connected to my home town!

SEA - Fresh sausage casings

Uwajimaya frequently has them in the meat case with the pig parts.

Where to buy a pig's head

Uwajimaya can get them for you special order. Depending on the day you order, they can have a fresh one the next day. They're not very expensive.

Chef's Choice Meats CLE

Thanks, my friend. The Sausage Shoppe does indeed rule. As I told my niece, "this sausage makes me want to move back to Cleveburg!"

Chef's Choice Meats CLE

The PeeDee ran a nice article about this place in Berea yesterday. Do any CLE hounds have any experience with this shop? I'll be visiting family in CLE in a few months and would love to check it out if it's worth the visit. BTW: My niece sent me a lovely Xmas care package from The Sausage Shoppe which Mrnyc was kind enough to turn me onto a few years ago.

Pork Jowl - SEA

I bought one from Wooly Pigs a couple weeks ago and will start curing it for guanciale this week. Their meat is consistently of the highest quality, but pricey. I'd been getting mine from Uwajimaya for years but they (a) have a tough time selling it and tend to grind it and (2) they changed suppliers and, frankly, the new suppliers don't provide as good a product as the previous one. I did get several jowls from them in November (new supplier) and while they were fine for my smoked jowl, I am a bit disappointed in them and glad to have one of Heath Putnam's for my guanciale.

Short one goose.......

Uwajimaya had some beautiful geese from Grimaud farms yesterday. Made me sorry I already got mine from Schlitz Farms.

Korean Food Truck Location?

Thank you! I hadn't found that post.

Korean Food Truck Location?

I've found one post on this board indicating it's located on Townsend between 3rd & 4th. Is that its usual location or are there others?

Thanks!

SEA- Brewpubs/Breweries Unique to SEA?

The Big Time on the Ave in the U District has been my personal favorite for around the 20 years or so they've been open. Consistently top quality beer and fairly good pub grub.

Thanks! I actually am flying down on Friday specifically so I can hit the Ferry Plaza Saturday morning.

Thanks for the tip about the digests. The sheer volume of posts on this board is a little daunting compared to the Pac NW board (I live in SEA).
