Most disappointing pizza in New York? Roio's is a strong contender for me.

With all the great pizza being served in NYC, how is bad pizza still popping up?

I love pizza.

Please tell me which places to avoid.

I can't get a decent chicken parm near 6th Ave and Broome St to save my life. Can somebody make a recommendation?

Thanks in advance.

Recommend a Bar/Restaurant to root for Italy (vs Spain) this Sunday. Euro 2012.

Please recommend a place to watch the Euro Cup final this Sunday.

There are plenty of Spanish tapas bars to support Spain, but Italian restaurants are less likely to have TVs at their bars or in their dining rooms.

Thanks!

Bigoli and The Not Ready For Prime Time Players

I was under the impression that Bigoli was entering NYC aiming to be a player in the big league Italian food scene.

To make that happen, here's what has to be done.

1. Get the kids off the floor.
From the coat check girl laughing out loud telling her funny stories to a captivated and otherwise inattentive maitre'd, to the 20-something barmaid, to the manager (?) getting a back rub by another female staff member in the bar-room dining area, it all has to stop.

2. When offering a piece of meat on the bone, have someone check to make sure there's something other than fat and bone actually being served.
Alternatively, when a 100-pound woman complains that there was no edible food on the dish, don't instruct her that "it's supposed to be that way". Just give her another piece and consider it an investment in future business.

3. $24 for 5 super-delicious mini ravioli. It almost adds up, but not really. Reassess.

4. Who styled that dining room? Howard Johnson?

Great wine list. Staff is dressed very well. Bar is comfortable.
Overall a decent effort, but there is much fodder for the professional reviewers to pick apart for this place. I wish Mr. Stratta the best of luck, but I suspect he's got a lot to learn about the market at Bigoli's price point.

This ain't Vegas.

The Dutch. I'm done.

After 3 or 4 times hanging out at the bar for drinks, 3 dinners and today's brunch, I'm finally done.

The place just doesn't work.

The servers are always professional and friendly when you've got their attention, but they disappear for long periods every time. The bar is too conscientious for its own good and the bartenders take forever to get drinks out.

The food is slow to come out and you're left with an expensive cocktail list of small expensive drinks and an inexplicably bad selection of crappy wines by the glass.

At noon today they were out of things on the menu and it took them over 90 minutes to serve us our brunch of little more than eggs.

The place is always annoyingly loud and is the single strongest bridge and tunnel magnet in the neighborhood. Think lots of tables of loud girls.

Andrew Carmellini's food is excellent. The food is tasty and if you're going to go, I recommend the Fall Salad appetizer.

What a shame. It's so nice inside. I really want to love this place but it's impossible.

Eating through the Piemonte region

DistendedBelly, thanks for such a large report. I'll be travelling through Piemonte with my wife one long weekend in November, so I'll save this info.
One thing though....Are you in the food/wine biz or just an advanced amateur like me? Why should we trust your palate aside from some assumed reasons.
Thank you again very much.

Are there any more "after hours" bars in The City That Never Sleeps?

I couldn't find a thing open after 4am last night in Greenwich Village or West Village.

Thanks for your input.

Hurricane dining - Any thoughts on what might...

Just had a great little Village/SoHo crawl through Da Silvano (outstanding) then Caffe Dante then David Burke Kitchen's Bar in The James Hotel.
A few places on MacDougal, like Slane, are also open.

Italian Waiters

It's not Simon. It's the savvier-than-though wasps they hire and teach how to pronounce Italian food terms that work the floor.

Bar Basque or The Lion?

I know, I know. They're probably very different but I feel like The Lion is slipping from favor and Bar Basque just might be a creative meal by an enthusiastic restaurant team.

Your thoughts, please.

San Genaro Feast: Sausage and Pepper Sandwich

I love it when people talk about San Gennaro having been better years ago...

I've been going for 30 years...It's always been the same. Like it or not.

The best bracciole and sausage sandwiches are made at Johnny Fasullo's stand on the southeast corner of Mulberry and Grand.

They roast their own hot peppers and let you pick them from a pan to add to your sandwich. Good stuff!
