Hey Lucy coming to the Annex - old Mel's Diner location

Although Mel's was one of my favourite neighbourhood joints, Hey Lucy's is a good substitute, especially since I thought it'd turn into another damn Sushi joint.

All the times I went to the King location, it was for their rooftop patio on margarita night, with the only food being their killer calzone. Heard the pizza's quite tasty, too, though.

Table for 30 Downtown?

Looking to make reservations for this Saturday for 30+ people. As it's this late in the week, I'm not caring what cuisine it is (but no Indian), or prices (but not, say, $100+ per person). The more casual the better.

Really, really miss Leoni's for things like this! The food was questionable, but it had lots of space and share plates!

Family-style Restaurant?

Looking for a joint with lots of big dishes to share -- say, 10 servings per plate. Remember Leoni's on Blue Jay Way? The food wasn't all that great, but I loved the atmosphere.

Exactly like Chinese restos, but not Chinese cuisine.

Mel's is Gone?

What was bad about it? The Big Baby Breakfast was one of the best values in town -- and you can't screw up classic breakfast.

They also had killer burgers that flew under the radar of most burger junkies in the city (well, until they changed buns). The toppings themselves made it a completely unique burger.

Granted, I rarely had the smoked meat (or any sandwiches, for that matter) -- but it was hearty, honest food, and for all 24 hours of a day. Sure it was dirty, the service slow and the bar nonexistent -- but come on! Good, quick grub!

And the so-atrociously-terrible-that-it's-good spaghetti that not one person I introduced it to couldn't get enough of!

Best bang for your buck? Downtown TO

Chinatown Centre lower level food court. $3.50 for 6 choices, in a big ass container.

Sure it's been shut down several times for infestation -- but that just means it's AUTHENTIC cuisine, man.

Latin American cafeteria-type food

Down in Central/South America, there's always a "cafeteria" on every corner where they serve food from steam tables for, say, $2 a mixed plate.

Do we have anything like that in Toronto? I don't even care if it's $10 -- I'm looking for the comfort food: chicken stews, fried chicken, rice, plantain, etc. I have no idea what any of the dishes are except that they're hearty and taste ridiculously good.

Black Hoof Review 4 out of 5 *'s

Holy shit, that was a most scintillating, mouthwatering review! Even more impressive, you didn't use the words "scintillating" or "mouthwatering"!

I was just curious in the joint, but it's now at the top of my list of places to try. Thanks for adding that it takes 2.5 hours to fully immerse in the experience. Very helpful to know.

Sushi 101 Bloor/ Howland\Borden - a quick review

I was about to get some Sushi On Bloor later tonight. So Sushi 101 is comparable, food-wise? Is it at least cheaper, then?

Restaurant Makeover

I read an interview in NOW (?) and the Reliable owner said something to the tune of, "My restaurant wasn't in trouble, but I basically paid $15000 for an hour-long commercial that would air multiple times through repeats for years."

Killer business acumen!

The Annex (best date place)

Bang on about Butler's Pantry!

I'm not a fan of Southern Accent, but only because I'm a lover of soul food, and the menu there doesn't reflect what I see in Harlem. I mean, the food's pretty good, but they just can't label themselves "Soul food" if they don't have collard greens, grits and fried chicken, dig?

The Italian place (Rocco's Plum Tomato) was a disappointment both times I've been there. You'll notice it's always empty.

Ordering Kobe Beef

Can anyone recommend a great website (or downtown butchery) that'll ship Japanese Kobe Beef to Toronto? Not American or Canadian, mind you, I want the real deal.

By the way, I heard that Canadians are now allowed to order this type of beef, whereas before we could only get Kobe-style. I have no idea what any of that means. I just want an actual Japanese cow on my plate.

Too lazy too cook a turkey

Where can I find a joint in the downtown Toronto area that'll make one for me? I'm also looking for alternates to turkey, or a place that makes it really different or special or unique.

I've tried turducken from, er, some joint in Rosedale (on Yonge near the Staples) and it was just meh. So no turducken reco's, please.

Oh yeah, and I need it for Friday. 2.5 days. Yup.

Real comfort food in Toronto?

I'm talking meatloaf, chicken stew, pot pies, gravies, corn on the cob, etc.

I have a real problem finding this kinda stuff in Toronto. Same goes with soul food. If someone just opened one damn stand that sells good comfort food, it'd make a killing.

Best Panzerotti/Calzone in Downtown TO

Cafe Diplomatica at College/Palmerston has good ones, as does Hey Lucy at King/Peter. Otherwise, I often go to Panzerotto Pizza -- skimpy on quality, but sometimes I need a foot-long deep fried bad mamma jamma.

Group of 30 on King West?

Any good restaurants that can accomodate this size of group? The only one that comes to mind in the area is Leoni's, though I'd like something a little, um, tastier. And better lookin'.

Rooftop Patios for Dinner?

I'm looking for a rooftop patio in the downtown core for dinner this Saturday, with a kick ass view of, well, buildings and smog, I suppose. Cuisine and prices really don't matter at this point -- just want to know my options.

(By the way, the joint people are thinking right now is Boathouse Grill at harbourfront. If you guys don't help me out, that's where I'll be stuck this Saturday.)

SOUL FOOD

Everytime I come back from NYC I post this, having got my twice-a-year-fill of soul food.

I'm looking for soul food in Toronto. I don't even care anymore if it's good soul food. Pedestrian, uninspired soul food would do it for me right now. Fried chicken, grits, fried catfish, collared greens -- you know what I mean.

And don't mention Southern Accent or Tasty's -- I know they're close, but they still lean more towards "cajun."

Best Jamaican Patties - GTA

Inside Bathurst Station, hands down! It's worth paying a token to get in just to get em.
