Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?
My mom did the steak roll, too. I still love them!
Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?
My mom did the same hot dog thing, too. But she would stuff a bit of leftover mashed potatoes inside then layer the cheese and wrap them in bacon.
The Big Waste....waste of time.
Here in Beautiful Downtown Baltimore the homeless guys will yell at you if you give them a perfect apple. Or a prime filet. Or money. Homeless guys yell. But, yeah I get what you're saying.
I often shop at a small inner city market that is frequented by lower income folks and have seen perfectly edible but not-so-pretty fruits and veggies go to waste while the perfect specimens are snatched up.
Top Chef Really Important Things To Do Before You Start the Show
IMPORTANT TIP #46: Even if you don't have kids, don't plan on having kids or think kids have been sent from the 9th circle of Hell just to torment you...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE for the love of all that is pure and holy learn a little about them. Most of them like sweet and crunchy. Some of them have pretty sophisticated palates and will eat things other than chicken fingers. And, alcohol is a no-no. (I'm looking at you Sherry Chicken Girl (whose name I can't remember.))

IMPORTANT TIP #3: If you're a primarily a seafood chef take the time to learn basic meat butchery. Conversely, if you're a chef in a steakhouse learn to clean and bone fish.

Carded in our Mid 50s!
I would like to say that a I do see a difference between parents offering a small taste to their child and said child sneaking a drink. For the parents I will point out that local statutes prohibit sharing alcohol with minors and that it could result in fines or other punishment for both restaurant and patron. Usually, the parents see my p.o.v. If there is a problem (and I haven't had one) I would involve a manager.
That being said... I believe that alcohol should be introduced to young people in a responsible manner before they are 21.
Carded in our Mid 50s!
That is actually a common sting tactic used by police cadets to bust bars and restaurants. Frankly, my job and the safety of my guests are very important to me and I will always do what I need to do to protect both.
Carded in our Mid 50s!
Regarding the mother/daughter scenario. I actually have encountered a similar thing. Two brothers were seated in my section. One ordered a beer and I carded him. The other ordered a soft drink. When the bro with the beer left the table the younger brother started to sip his beer. I walked up to the table and asked him if he had I.D. on him. He said no so removed the beer and told him that he could explain to his brother where his beer went. Big bro was upset and not with me. In the interest of customer relations I did remove the beer from the bill.
Bad Restaurant Names
There's a bar in Rosedale, MD (that also serves food) called "Dick's Halfway Inn."
Wrap your collective heads around that.
True hang over (hangover) remedy
Greasy food (a huge Rueben sandwich from a local deli is my choice.)
Then, a soda with REAL sugar. This way my stomach is happy and my blood sugar rises.
Funniest Thing a Server Said to You
Ah, but you'd be surprised how many people order a "zin" and expect some pink crap.
Charged For Things In Restaurants That Other Restaurants Give You Gratis
Okay, I'll stop bitching about wine mark-ups, now!!! Good googity moogity!
You’re charging me for that?...Really?
Coming from a waiter's POV, I want to say that at first glance this is incredibly rude. That being said...
Last week I had a couple celebrat their anniverersy in my section. Now, we do a complimentary baked alaska for special occasions. We have to ring it in and then get a manager to comp it from the bill. Well... we were busy and it completely slipped my mind. You guessed it. I dropped the check on the table and then collected the payment. It never occured to me until after they left that I had charged them for their special occasion treat. I was mortified.
If they had paid by credit card I could have refunded their money immediately but they paid cash. Luckily, they had made a reservation via Open Table so I had their phnoe number. I called them but their was no answer. left a messageto apologize and say that I could do one of three things. They could come in the next day and I could give them thier money back. They could come back and I could comp them another dessert. Or, I could send then a gift card for the amount of the dessert.
As of today I haven't heard back from them, but I still hope I do.
My rather long winded point is accidents happen. If this was an accident the waiter/restaurant could have and should have made it right. Otherwise, I have to believe the restaurant is just cheap.
Best Happy Hours and/or Weeknight Specials in Baltimore?
Check out Oceanaire in Harbor East. They've just started a great new happy hour. It runs Monday through Friday 5 to 7 and includes some great food and drink specials. Half prices apps, $3 beers and such. Went there after the Oriole's home opener and had a ball.
Shouldn't the server at a function tell you if the bar is no-host?
Having read all the responses I feel compelled to add my take on this. Yes, the host should have found a tactful way to state the no-host bar. "The Society is pleased to welcome you to our event..A three course dinner soft drinks and coffee will be provided."
I am a server and have been in the restaurant business for 25 years so I believe the server had a responsibility to say something along the lines of "Would you prefer to start a tab or pay as you go?" when taking the order. This gives the guest/customer a chance to ask for a drinks menu or decide not to order.
Are there things you eat/avoid every day to be healthy?
I want to be your dad when I grow up!
btw...I'm in my mid 40s.
Songs with restaurant names in the lyrics
At a bar called O'Malley's is where they planned their escape.
trendy places for drinks
Try Milan on the edges of Baltimore's Little Italy. They have martinis like "Gucci Envy" and "Valentino." And they list their prices in both Dollars and Euros. And, apparently, they also accept Euros.

Special occasion dinner in Baltimore
Morris Martick retired. I miss him and his restaurant! "No, you can't have ice teawith your pate. If you'd like a glass of wine I've got..." What a character.

Thnaks, folks. I appreciate your help. I think I'm going to look up that book by Dale DeGroff. Sounds interesting.
