McEwan's - ripped off!

haha yes, all I remember thinking when browsing McEwans last was, "This place is out of control!" I distinctly remember looking at a potato salad consisting of 5 small halved new potatoes for $12 and laughing out loud. There are people who will gladly pay, though.. I should probably troll the place for a personal chef gig, now that I'm thinking about it.

I'll admit to picking up some very beautiful dried pastas that I didn't think I could get anywhere else.

Blackstone meats on the Danforth

I was happy when this place moved into the 'hood and I tried giving it many chances but it failed so often. Like someone else said, there was too much product that was already seasoned (I like to cook myself, thanks!) and I think I only ever went into the place once and came out with what I was looking for. Always a very slim selection of stuff on display.

I special ordered 10 lbs of ground bison for a party one time, giving three weeks notice, and got a call from them the morning I was to pick it up that the order had not come in! The woman felt horrible about it, and gave me some ground top sirloin at the price of their regular ground beef, but that was pretty much the last straw for me..

kumai - how much??

When I was there last (and this was probably two months ago now) the hostess/waitress was the same as always. She recognized us and immediately let us know that they would not be able to serve sake to us that evening (like my sake with my sashimi, what can I say ;) ...we stayed, of course, but I was appreciative that she let us know before seating us.

We didn't ask too many questions, but she informed us that they there was a new manager and they would not be able to serve alcohol for the time being. The sushi chef behind the counter was the same as always. Don't know how things have evolved since then, though..

I hate to hear this..

Did you notice if they were serving alcohol at all? The last time the SO and I went, they were "under new management" and that meant no alcohol temporarily.

Black Hoof

This problem will be addressed when the Hoof Cafe opens up across the street, but in the meantime I always head just east to the Press Club for a beer or bourbon while waiting to get my table at the Hoof.

More stocking/supply chain issues at Loblaw's - getting fed up - lame excuses - foil pans and tarragon !

I haven't stepped foot in a grocery store since May since I can get to a farmer's market three times a week. I think I'm going to have an anxiety attack when I have to step foot in a Loblaws come winter.

Romantic Birthday Dinner in Mississauga for Two

I'm sorry I only saw this reply now!

All the staff was the same, from what I could tell. I do not know who the new owners are. I had the same waitress/hostess as usual, who informed me immediately upon my arrival, with regret, that they couldn't serve me my usual sake. The sushi chef was also the same. The food was still great, but I do like my sake or beer with sashimi!

FYI, Kumai is under new management and without a liquor license at the moment. Was there last night and they couldn't tell us when they'd be serving liquor again.

ISO Tiny Brioche Hamburger Buns

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought about that specifically but I was hoping to see (smell?) a physical product before ordering just so I know what I'm getting.

I did go to the omgbakedgoodness site and threw an e-mail out, but there's a minimum $100 order for the buns, which are $6 a dozen.. and I do not need 200 buns; just about 120. I suppose I could freeze the rest, but the buns are a little on the larger size than I was hoping for, so the search continues.

ISO Tiny Brioche Hamburger Buns

Hey all, hoping you can help me out; I'm looking for a bakery that will do a custom order for tiny brioche buns. If you've ever had the mini bison burger hors d'oeuvre at Canoe, you know what I'm talking about - it's that size I'm going for (no bigger than 2 inches).

Preferably a place in the east end of the city (Danforth), but I'll go downtown to pick them up as well.

Thanks for any leads!

"Market Spice Tea"

Great suggestion.. I'm looking to impress a huge tea lover. And sea salt caramels sound like something that might not make it back to Toronto after I'm done with them. Thanks!

Seattle: Visiting, Need Help

Yeah I definitely thought about that. I will be flying to Vancouver, and then driving across the border into Seattle, so I think I might be able to get away with some wines and food in the trunk and then airport customs for travelling within Canada won't be a hassle :)

Hell's Chicken?

Drove by that place on Saturday night, and it cracked me up. Would never think of stepping foot in there though! Had some Persian from across the street.. fantastic kebob and nane barbari (sp?) right out of the oven. Didn't catch the name of the place, though.. not even sure it had an English sign; it was packed, even though the sign said it was closed.

Seattle: Visiting, Need Help

Hey west coast Chowhounders.. I'm visiting Seattle next week from Toronto, and need a little help.

I'll be staying at the Inn at the Market, which I understand is pretty much right on the Pike Place Market. I'm wondering if any of you guys can recommend some goods that are Seattle-specific that I could take home with me to Toronto for some chow friends.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

The party lingers...but are you first out the door?

It depends on the company. At family gatherings or with groups of acquaintances, the BF and I are usually one of the first to go. He is always the one to initiate the departure.. usually while I am in the middle of a drink, even though I've told him a million times that irks me. We're young, and when with close friends usually close a bar, but on other occasions.. well, if you've seen Chris Rock talk about single vs. married people, you'll understand.

Quiet Pint in Downtown TO?

C'est What used to be a place I'd go for a quiet pint after work, but the last couple times I sat at the bar I observed what seems to be a disgusting new practice in Toronto bars: the overflow from beers being poured on tap is put into a glass, and when there is a half pint of warm stale beer overflow collected, it gets dumped into subsequent drink orders.

When I asked a bartender about it, all he could do was shrug, blame management's direction, and assure me that nobody sitting at the bar gets served the overflow.

Food-related Halloween costumes

I'm going out for some Halloween drinking this Friday right after class. It's culinary school.. so I'm going as a chef ;) I picked up a plastic butcher knife to tuck in my apron. I know, I'm cheating, but I won't have time to change!

Should you tip on tax?

I personally don't tip on tax.. it's a principle thing. Our food and alcohol taxes are high. The server gets 20 to 30% of the total bill pre-tax and I don't think that's anything to complain about.

Music in the kitchen?

Music is a must when I'm in the kitchen. When I'm cooking for the BF and myself, it's after a long day at work, and coming home with ingredients, plugging my iPod into the stereo, pouring a glass of wine and spending the evening making dinner is all part of how I relax.

I listen to all sorts of stuff, so it varies.. lately it's been more upbeat downloads from my favourite music blog, missingtoof, but my iPod is full of everything from Prince, to Bob Dylan, to Rilo Kiley, to MIA, to The Cars, to Funkadelic...

Oh and I just turned 27 yesterday!

Which location are you going to? I enjoyed my time immensely at the Adelaide resto... the Queen Street locale left much to be desired.
