Arepa Lady - Roosevelt & 79th St

Her myspace page says she is back. Does anyone know why she doesn't open up shop until after 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday? Kind of late for an old guy like me to be traipsing down to JH, even if it is only a few subway stops away. Is it worth it?

Shea Stadium Eats

I always go to Mama's of Corona when I go to games at Shea. The only problem with it is getting to it, if you want something other than a sandwhich. They have booths set up around the stadium for sandwiches, but if you wanttheir other stuff, you have to go the Field Level. Getting there can be tricky if you don't have a FL seat. You have to go to the Loge, near Gate B, and walk down ramps like you are headed toward the club shop. there is a small path that is set up just for people who want to go to Mama's from other levels. It was hard to find the first time, but worth the trip. I always get the antipasta, which comes in a very heavy plastic tin, with iceberg lettuce at the bottom covered in balsamic vinegar and oil and topped with olives, chunks of cheeses and a nice variety of meats and pickled veggies. It was $9.00 last year. They also have some nice desserts down there.

Mole

I went to Tacqueria Coatzinga(o?) on Saturday at the advice of many on this board. It had a huge menu with some nice looking moles. I didn't have it, but my neighbor did and it looked great. I was there for breakfast so I stuck with the huevos y chorizo. It was excellent. If you want to see a menu and you Google it, you can pretty much add $2.00 to every item listed on the bridgeandtunnelclub post. I don't know when they raised prices but it was more expensive than I was expecting. $12.00 for the egg dish, coffee, o.j., and a tip. It's located close to the Roosevelt station in JH on Roosevelt Ave and 75th/76th.

Ridgewood Pork Store - The Real Thing

Is it as good as the Ridgewood store? The same? If so, I'll be stopping by this week :)

Ridgewood Pork Store - The Real Thing

This sounds wonderful. But you are correct, it would be a trek to get there. The nearest subway stops are on the L and M (I dont drive). That means a trip to the city and then a trip back out to Queens via a long local. There may be a bus that runs nearby. I'll have to check that option. I down for some sausages.

Jay Dee Bakery on QB in Rego Park. Closed?

LOL Janie. I have a horrible constitution. I'm slowly rotting from the inside from all the crap I stuff down my gullet, but when I go, I will have a smile on my face. ;) All of their cookies were actually quite good. The chocolate lace cookies were also excellent. I will miss having it so close.

Wow, do I miss cajun cooking

There's a place on Austin St in FH called Mardi Gras grill. I haven't been yet but the menu looks appetizing.

Jay Dee Bakery on QB in Rego Park. Closed?

This place has the best rainbow cookies in the world. Unfortunately, the storefront is papered over and the sign in the window says "For Sale." It also says "Closed for Passover" which is odd because Passover has ended and if they weren't planning on reopening, why say "Closed for Passover"? I was able to peak inside and see that the interior is undergoing a gut renovation. It would be so sad if this bakery were to close after more than 50 years in business, albeit with different owners over the years. Does anyone know the scoop here? I know they had problems with the health department a few months back and had to close for a couple of weeks, but they reopened after that.

Octopus as a main course.

I can't give you specifics, (darn it menupages, when will you add Queens!), but I am sure that there are Korean restaurants that serve it as a main dish.

The perfect weekend in Queens

Lunch on saturday at Sriprphai. Had the saute chicken, pinapple, cashew and toasted chilis. Sweet tasting and delicious. Also had the BBQ pork tenderloin salad. Wonderful.

Went to Flushing for lunch on Sunday. First stop was Chengdu Heaven. The chef wasn't in, so I settled for a bowl of dan-dan noodles. Fabulous as usual. If I could find that buzz closer to Rego Park, that would be sweet. On the way back to the subway, I stopped at Corner 28 and got the shrimp-egg noddles from the street window. I love how they make them, pouring the liquid onto the flat pan, adding shrimp and eggs and then putting it into the steamer for about a minute. You get a Big Mac box full of noodles, shrimp and eggs, all for $1.25. (they might have mischarged me, how can it have been so cheap!). They squirt some sweet soy sauce on the top for good measure and I had a fantastic meal. The only disappointment is that they are always out of the pork buns (not the steamed ones). Where can I get some good ones to go?

Sunday night dinner at Cheburechnaya. Had the Pilaff (delicious and better than expected), big chunks of braised beef, carrots, and rice in a plate too big to come close to finishing. Only $8.00. Also had the lamb fat and lamb meat kabobs. The lamb fat is heavenly.

If I could have those three meals every weekend....wow.

Eating Near Shea Stadium

There was a thread about Chinese restaurants in Flushing recently with some excellent insight from a Chinese-American. He/She (I can't remember who it was) said that it is unusual for a Chinese restaurant in Flushing to take reservations because of the high table turnover and the desire not to have tables sitting empty waiting on a reserved party.

That said, I love the dim sum at Ocean Jewels.

Does any place serve a clam and garlic pizza?

It looks like a regular NY pizza, red sauce and cheese, with flecks of green (maybe fresh oregano or basil) and then covered with crushed garlic and small clams. There's no white sauce. My brother lives out there and has it all the time. I'll see if he can get a photo for us. It really is delicious.

Does any place serve a clam and garlic pizza?

Yes. As MelissaC1 stated, that's New Haven style. Amici's sells one of those too. I'm looking for the red clam pizza, not the white.

Does any place serve a clam and garlic pizza?

There's a small restaurant chain in the SF Bay area called Amici's that serves up some delicious NY style pizza. One of the specialty pies is called Manhattan Red Clam. It comes with lots of clams and crushed garlic. The sauce is excellent. It was one of the most delicious combos on a pizza I've eve had. I'm wonding if any of the outer borough joints has this on the menu.

Appetizers and Vegetables at Peter Luger Steakhouse

If you like PL's bacon, go to West Nassau Meat Market (aka Kishka) on Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint. It's a Polish deli specializing in sausages and meats. The sell slab bacon (which is what PL's bacon is), and you can cut it to your desired thickness at home and fry it in a pan. My ex-wife is Polish. She used to make that bacon as a main-course, with fried onions and potaties to go with it.

Spiedini al Romano in Queens?

Thanks for the tip, but the BX would be a longer trip than Carmines on the UWS, at least for me.

Spiedini al Romano in Queens?

If you've never had Spiedini al Romano before, you owe it to yourself to try it. It's a baked skewer of bread and cheese (one slice of bread, one slice of cheese, one slice of breaad, one slice of cheese, etc...), usually an Italian bread and mozzerella. Baked and then topped with anchovies, capers and lemon-butter sauce. It's a sure fire artery clogger but the taste is extraordinary. The best I've ever had is at Carmines in the city. Does anyone know if any of the Italian restaurants in Queens serves this dish? I would love to not have to travel to the UWS every few weeks to satisfy this craving.

Chao Thai

I went to Chao Thai last night for dinner. It's accross the street from the noodle/dumpling place Lao Bei Fang (sp?).

Anyway, I thought it was good, but not in the same league as Srip. The larb was kind of bland. It had nowhere near the zing/tang that Srip has. Also, Srip's larb is ground meat, Chao Thai uses chopped meat. I prefer the texture of the ground meat as it seems to absorb flavors more readily.

I had the panang curry with shrimp. It was a bowl of green string beans and red peppers with 8 medium shrimp. It was very tasty, in fact, I used the spoon to drink the curry.

Cash only and no alcohol, but you can bring your own.

Bottom line: If you have a hankering for Thai on a Wednesday, this place will do. All other days, go to Srip.

Ocean Jewels rules!

I went to Ocean Jewels on Saturday after reading this particular post. i had a yen (no pun intended) for the t-bone steak, which sounded yummy. BIG MISTAKE. First, they didn't ask me how I wanted it cooked, they told me it would be well-done. I told them, "no, please make it rare." The small, thin, t-bone came out, cut up as Lau said, and there was a crispy, sweet glaze covering the steak, that was sort of like the covering for creme brule. But the steak was horrible! It was well done, and I realized afterwards why....they deep fry this steak! That's how they get the outside to be crispy. The steak was uniform cooked through. It was obviously not grilled, but deep-fried. What a huge waste of beef and what a big time disappointment. Serves me right for ordering steak in a seafood restaurant, but I thought for $19.95, if its like a Lugar's, I can't go wrong. Well, it was awful.

Quiznos just jacked up prices and reduced sizes

No longer can you get a "regular" sized sandwich for $8.00. Now they only have 6" and 12" The 6" is $8.00 but its the size of the old "small"

I'm oficially finished with Quiznos.

Big group at Sripraphai

I'v eseen tables of 15-20 before there. If the weather is warmer when you have the dinner, you may be able to reserve their outdoor garden out back.

Cheburechnaya: dessert in the area

Cheb has a few desserts, but IMO, nothing to write home about. The "Chak-Chak" is a plate of those fried Chinese noodles that come with every take-out order from a Chinese restaurant, drizzled with nuts and honey. Entirely forgettable. They have somewhat decent baklava, green and white, but they don't hold a candle to the ones from Titan Market in Astoria. They also have watermelon, but at $12, I'll pass.

Don't get me wrong, I think Cheb is da bomb, but I would stick to main courses and save dessert for elsewhere.

Arepa Lady?

Can you link the myspace page?

Cheburechnaya alternative for Saturday Evening?

SF Brother,

If you tell mom about my lamb fat jones, I'll tell her how, when we were kids, you used to eat entire jars of Fluff with a spoon in the bedroom when she wasn't looking.

Love,
Your bro.

My first Eat and Run!

When we were kids, my brother and I were eating in a restaurant off Route 208 in New Jersey (Jahn's?). Anyway, this lady comes up to us and gives us $1.00 (decent loot in the late 60's) and tells us she wants us to do her a favor. All we need to do is shout out "Bye Mom" as she leaves. We figure, what the heck. So, then when the waitress comes by, she leaves and shout Bye Mom! for all to hear. We thought that was odd, but oh well. Our bill came a few seconds later and it's double what we expected. We aked the waitress why and she told us that our "mother" said that we were going to be taking care of the bill! We ran outside just as the lady was getting into her car. We start yelling at her and she starts crying "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Don't call the police!" She got down on her knees and started pulling on my leg...just like I'm pulling yours.....

Cheburechnaya alternative for Saturday Evening?

Do they have grilled lamb fat?

Cheburechnaya alternative for Saturday Evening?

All of the Kosher Uzbeki restaurants are closed until the end of the Sabbath. Cheb opens promptly after sunset, which isn't too late this time of year. I'm usually one of the first patrons on Saturday evening. The lamb fat is to die for, and I'm sure, eventually, it will, in fact, kill me. :)

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?

I try to go to Sri once a week as well. I usually go alone but prefer company.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?

I also live in Queens. :)

I'm an attorney, working in the Financial District. I take the R train home and have a hard time staying on the train as we stop at each Queens station. There's a Chowhound favorite at just about every Queens stop on the R.
