What the World Eats [moved from Not About Food]

Has anyone seen this Time magazine article? I thought it's very interesting comparing what families around the world are eating in a week. I am quite shocked too at how much money is spent on food.

Richmond – Pacific East Mall - Tw Bestway Foods – Saving the best for last … Taiwanese preserved fruit, pork jerky, hot jelly drinks

I love just about everything you described, but that's because I grew up with them as treats and snacks. Ask for a taste if you want to be safe. Happy exploring!

Hunt for Rabokki?

The only place I've seen it served around here is in the food court inside Han Kook Supermarket in Sunnyvale. They use ramen noodles, though.

Turkey for Chinese New Year

I have a turkey that I intend to cook for Chinese New Year. Of course stuffing and sides will reflect the Chinese theme. I am thinking of stuffing the bird with glutinous rice and chinese sausage but don't have any recipe. Has anyone done this before? Should I soak the rice overnight? How long would it take? How much rice inside the cavity? What temperature to roast? Thank you so much for any help.

What to do with 5lbs of potatoes?

Any ideas on what I could do with the sack of potatoes I have lying around? I hate storing them for too long because they sprout too easily. I am especially looking to cook them chinese or other asian way. They're russets, I think. Thank you!!

Turducken Report--South Bay edition

What did they charge you? Anything else worth buying?

No Knead Bread a bit doughy

Yes, I've tried it now with 1.5 cups water and it was much, much more manageable. I actually did get a boule, with a much higher rise than my first. I baked in my 7.5 qt. Le Creuset at 450 F covered for 30 minutes and lid off for 20 more. By the time I took off the lid the loaf was golden but not overly brown and not wanting another loaf of doughy bread I let it bake for 20 more minutes. Still haven't cut into it yet, but my fingers are crossed.

One more thing about Bittman's bread - Rose Levy Beranbaum's take on it

Rose Levy Beranbaum, a.k.a. author of The Bread Bible, has also tested this recipe and has a few suggestions and things to say about the bread. Among them being that she thinks you could just bake the loaf on a hot pizza stone on a piece of parchement. She also noticed that there is an extra 2 tablespoons of water in the printed recipe versus the 1 1/2 cups of water used as shown in the video.

Oatmeal--What do you put on yours (besides brown sugar)?

Pure maple syrup. Another friend likes to put chinese dried shredded pork (rou song).

Avocado recipes???

Avocado ice cream. Very delicious. I basically make a thick shake using avocado, cream/half&half, sugar and a pinch of salt. Sometimes I make a lighter version using plain yogurt in place of the cream. Sometimes I use condensed milk. And when I am feeling ultra decadent I make a custard base for the ice cream.

Quick, what to do with a whole yellow croaker?

Okay, I guess it's time for a report. I pan fried the whole fish in a non-stick pan, 8 minutes per side. While the fish was frying I browned some minced garlic, ginger, green onion, added some bottled seafood sauce that I bought from an Asian store. Removed fish from frying pan, blotted excess oil, poured sauce over the fish. It was crispy, salty outside, white and sweet inside. It was delicious. I thought it would be bony, too, but not at all.

Quick, what to do with a whole yellow croaker?

Need idea on how to turn a whole yellow croaker into dinner tonight. Chinese preparations prefered, but other ideas are also welcome. Thanks so much!

Thai Restaurant in San Jose - Erawan. Am I the only one who thinks it is the best Thai restaurant in the SF Bay?

Oh, I agree that Erawan is probably not phenomenal and not a destination Thai restaurant. But it is the best from a bunch I've tried in the Southbay. Pretty, please, share your favorites in the area. I am very interested.

Thai Restaurant in San Jose - Erawan. Am I the only one who thinks it is the best Thai restaurant in the SF Bay?

Yes, I've had the best Thai food here. My favorite things to order are the beef salad, pad see yew, and the special dish of seafood curry cooked in aluminum pouch. What pleases me more than any other Thai restaurants I've been to is that they do not tone down their seasonings, things are boldly flavored.

I've had food in the restaurant and as take out. Not sure if they deliver, though.
