Juniper & Ivy or Kettner Exchange?

Doh! Yes! Yodel not devil dog. I am getting my 60's processed food lunch treats mixed up! We did only share 5 dishes plus dessert and it honestly was plenty. The tartar was heaped with meat and the uni linguine was very buttery and rich. Definitely going back and will try that off menu burger.

Juniper & Ivy or Kettner Exchange?

Went last night for the first time to J&I. Loved it! Crowded by 6 on a Wednesday so word is out.
The "deviled eggs" were unique and wonderful. Albacore with finger lime sauce was delicious. The new item "chicken nuggets" was very good, not great but he accompanying mustard and kimchi sauces were very tasty. Steak tartare w quail egg toast was delicious and loaded w meat. Uni linguine and clams was loaded w umami and perfectly al dente but sharing even an appetizer size portion was very heavy because of the richness.
Thank goodness I saved room for the devil dog. That may have been my favorite dessert ever. Should be shared by 4 people though as it was huge especially after the pasta. Can't wait to go back.

I had no complaints. My better half's only complaint was that he mentioned to them 3 times when he made reservations, it was my birthday and they didn't even say happy birthday. That would never happen at George's or Tapenade, my usual requests for birthday dinner. But I didn't mind with that kind of food.

Sushi?

Umi sushi in Shelter Island would fit the bill for that and they have a ton to select from.

Mendocino area report

Reposting from our august trip because this thread really guided us.

I'm happy to report back that we had a great trip and any thanks for the advice on this thread and Dottie May's thread.

Stopped at Big John's in Healdsburg for some wonderful items for a picnic. Wish we had a place like that here! Made it to Navarro winery before we had to stop and dig in while enjoying a bottle of their fabulous Rose.
We also stopped at Toulouse winery which was just a welcoming, family run place. Enjoyed some fine Pinot Noirs there.

In Mendocino, we agree that Wild Fish in Little River was our favorite. Very small, only seats 20 so you need reservations. Best black cod and halibut we've ever had. Spectacular, unusual dessert of Blueberry Lavender creme brûlée. Loved this place. Family run and they make sure to take care of you. We just strolled in one night and were turned away so you absolutely need reservations.

We also went to Ledford House in Albion. Food was very good but kind of surprised that the fisherman's stew had no shellfish at all, just salmon and a whitefish (more bouillabaisse like in Cassis I guess) but was definitely under seasoned with salt and I usually complain things are too salty. But what made it wonderful and why we'd return was the awesome view and live jazz which just made it a great Mendocino experience. Owner was a really nice guy too.

Spontaneously stopped by Albion River Inn for dinner without reservations and got a window table which again was just gorgeous for ocean views. We were not too hungry and just had some apps and shared a burger and delicious wines. The service was extremely warm and friendly and we'd certainly return.

Piaci's in Ft Bragg is also very small essentially a bar with a nice selection of beer on tap and quite a pizza selection as well. Very good salads. Enjoyed our lunch there but I felt the bartender/waiter couldn't care less about whether we enjoyed our lunch. My husband didn't mind and just said well it's a local place, that's what you get.

Had lunch at the Mendocino Hotel because...starving. It was ok. Cold day so we had chowder and their version of ramen noodle soup (obv not authentic in the least but warm). Despite what I'd read about service, the server here was very efficient and friendly.

Only tried 5200 in Little River for breakfast as we were staying at Heritage House. Selection was mediocre, service was lacking (had to ask everyday for coffee refills, or milk for oatmeal or something). So with so many excellent options for dinner, we didn't risk it. They still have a bunch of kinks to work out with service.

On our way back to Sonoma we had very tasty panini and iced tea in Boonville at Mosswood Market. Tried the grilled eggplant with goat cheese panino and the salami panino, both excellent and served with salad and a smile. The chef came out to make sure we were enjoying her panini.

So all in all a lovely trip, didn't even go over how much fun we had doing non-foodie things. I see everyplace there accommodates for picnics and that is what we will do more of next time in addition to revisiting Wild Fish, ARI and Ledford House for dinner and sunsets! Thanks for all the advice, hounds!

Tadokoro, Fantastic experience

I love Tadokoro! Our favorite place because of Take, the ambience and the sushi.
I've discovered so many wonderful things there. The ankimo is homemade and wonderful. Zuke tuna and cured halibut delicious! He cures his own salmon roe which is out of this world. Our best night there was when he gave us a "tour" of 6 types of tuna starting with basic tuna and ending with three grades of toro. Absolutely amazing . And he is just the nicest guy too. Beats Ota and Kaito for me.

Pizzeria Mozza--Underwhelmed

Went to Mozza once and it was good pizza, not out of this world. Prices were higher than I'd like but you were downtown. Weird to not get any kind of hospitality when you arrive...at least serve olives, or bread or popcorn or something while we wait and wait for service. Had to park at the Hyatt so that was costly. Service was ok, not great considering it wasn't busy. Decor was ok but chairs quite uncomfortable. It just didn't have the magic I'd hoped for. Living in north county we are sticking with blue ribbon pizza.
Better half however has been to Mozza in Newport Beach and says it was way better for service, food and ambience. So there's that. You can't always blame San Diego for managerial decisions that lead to poor outcome of a new restaurant.
Puesto was packed when we were at Mozza.

Buying tea

I used to love Infusions of Tea at Costa Verde. They sold wonderful bulk tea and you could also drink brewed tea there. Great assortment but they went out of business a few years ago. Any places in SD where you can buy and try tea? And don't say Teavana, that's totally different than what Infusions of Tea was.

Easy dining for one from the convention center

That looks delicious! And a bit like the food I had in Costa Rica. Will have to try it.

Downtown Denver

Staying in downtown Denver by the Marriott City Center for 3 nights. Would love some nearby dinner or even lunch recs as we won't have a car or others within reasonable taxi distance. Can be any cuisine, we love all kinds. Something very Denver? Any price point will go but unique ethnic cuisines are appreciated. We're from San Diego, so don't need Mexican or sushi recs so much.

Good bread in No County

Went to Prager brothers (they're only open Friday and Saturday) and the bread was indeed delicious. Luckily one of the Prager bros was there and told us about the farmers markets that have it and some local stores. My dream is that someday they open up a restaurant too like Bread Cie but here in NoCo!

Wine stores in North County

I usually go to SD Wine Company or Vintage Wines on Miramar road but was wondering if there's anything similar in North County. I'm not much for BevMo and even though the Vons in Encinitas has a pretty decent selection was wondering if I could find some place like SDWC locally in a pinch.

Good bread in No County

Oooh! Thanks for the tip about Darshan. Got their baguette today and it's delicious. Next on the agenda, Prager brothers, then Belen when I feel like a drive.
I will also check out Bread and Olive as it's close to where I live and that name just sounds yummy!

Good bread in No County

Used to love to get freshly baked bread at Bread Cie and Con Pane but since we moved to No County don't know where to go. Boudin in Encinitas has good sourdough but I want those rustic and ciabatta type loaves you get at BC and CP. Champagne bakery here does bake fresh French bread but it's not all that. Having a cocktail party this weekend and really would like to not have to drive all the way downtown to find some. Thanks!

Santa Rosa to Mendocino

Mmm yes. We've been to Healdsburg and had some great meals there. Would it be crazy to drive up 1 instead of 101?
Any Mendocino wineries besides Navarro that we should check out?

need recommendations for CSAs & other local food delivery services

If you are in north county I highly recommend morning star farms.
She has weekly and biweekly deliveries with all kinds of options. I never did CSA until 4 months ago and the quality and variety is awesome. They do exotics so you also get macadamia nuts and pineapple guavas etc instead of the usual kale kale kale.
But if you're not in north county and need delivery , you may want to look elsewhere.

Chow worthy in Encinitas - guests coming from Chicago

Wonderful sushi at Kaito. He's the impressionist master of sushi in SD. Make sure to reserve at the bar w Kazuo. Ambience looks funky in this strip mall but omakase is the best.

Qero is fantastic. We love it but reservations are needed as they do seatings.

Monday nights just have a fun beer and burger night with live music at Craftsman. Very tasty and casual.

Best Restaurant Meal in 2013 ?

I second Tadokoro. One of our many omakases with Take was a night with 4 types of toro. It was fabulous. Love that place. Let the rest go to Ota or Kaito. Some of us know Tadokoro is best.

Outside of SD, in Truckee we had a wonderful meal at Stella's. Sat outside at sunset and there was one delectable dish after another. Their twist on a bahn mi was one of many hits for the night.

Broguiere's egg nog?

I saw it at whole foods del mar and the harvest ranch in olivenhain. The egg nog is just a little too much for me...rich and kind of an almost slippery feel. I can see how people may like it but it's not for me.

Best sushi north of Mexico, south of Santa Barbara?

Take does not do lunch yet and I wish he did.
I have not felt the love at Kaito that I do at Tadokoro. The quality is there at Tadokoro with a way better ambience and it is very much Jiro dreams of sushi. I live near Encinitas and prefer Tadokoro. But Kaito is quite nice especially if you are staying in carlsbad.
Try both!

Best sushi north of Mexico, south of Santa Barbara?

Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town is equal to Ota and Kaito with way better ambiance. Ask to sit at the bar by Take and do omakase. You will love it.

Encinitas area, big anniversary, Monday

Really wanted to try Veladora but they are closed on Mondays.
Soo... think we are going a little more casual and just going to try out Solace and Moonlight.
Already have done all the ones near LJ, so we will try something different and let you know how it was. I like the menu and enjoyed the US in NP.
