Shopsin's - Now that's New York!
It took sometime for us to even find the place but once we did, we were transported to a gone by era of yester-York.
We've never been to the other Shopsin locations all I can speak for is the Essex St. Market locate.
I didn't know going in that Shopsin is a family affair. Dad seems to major in the F word but what did I care, I came to eat. I'm not going home with the guy.
I had the Blisters on your Sister.
Dh had the Adobe.
Very, very worthy find. Very, very satisfying meal.
Being a native New Yorker, I am never impressed nor surprised.
Shopsin surprised me some.

Thanks for sharing your dinner experience.
I love that place. The owner is really down to earth too.
Making a Case for...Mood and a Movie in Kew Gardens
Late reading this, obviously.
I too, have experience the rudeness and feel somewhat vindicated that it was not just in my head.
Its just poor business practice, imo. Food is good thought. Only reason I return.
Restaurants in Kew Gardens?
Interesting.
So its not just me then who thought the owner can be rude.
I understand they are not stroller friendly due to space capacity, but you'd think an owner would be a little more accommodating if I am a repeat customer. The guy practically made this face like we just weren't welcomed. That left a very bad taste.
I agree about Dani's excellent pizza. My favorite, hands-down anywhere.
any places to have lunch for $4 in Union Square?
For about $5 you can get a really good falafel at Maoz with lots o fixings. A lot better than Rainbow's in my opinion. There is also the Halal food guy on the corner of 17th and Union Sq. (outside of Petco) he has lots to choose from in your budget.
Union Square
Interesting. I was at the Wagamama in Amsterdam and I remember that Republic kid. Pretty decent bowl of noodles, I have to say.
Best 5 restaurants in Jackson Heights?
Not to mentioned Jan's, where you can grab a very reliably good breakfast. This place is an institution.

Suggestions for a tourist please!!
jen2202,
You have a wonderful lay of the NY chowland from JFores. If you follow, you will have an authentic NY experience (culinary and otherwise) more enriching then the "sightseeing" itinerary you mentioned.
Have fun!
Thai Groceries In Outer Queens
No thai basil BUT...I did find kaffir lime leaves in Whole Foods.
where can I find good chinese tamales (joong)
I regret never having made the pilgrimage. The only joong I ever had were the ones my grandmother used to make from scratch.
Sad.
tea and sympathy
I like T&S. Yes, it is the real deal. You and your bf will be VERY intimate there since it is miniscule. Lovely, lovely scones with clotted cream.
Best Mott Street Chinese?
Their congee with thousand year old eggs and shredded beef is the meal I'd have before my execution.
chinese new year suggestions?
We went to Shanghai Joe's one year. Good times and very good food.
Best Mott Street Chinese?
Big fan of Big Wong!
The BEST (I mean it) congee anywhere and the soup noodle dishes are near perfect.
Cheap, cheap, cheap to boot.
Trendy restaurants with grea ambience, decor and food?
Asiate.
The place is unbelievable posh. The views make you feel like Donald Trump.
The food while excellently prepared was a little less than inspired to me.
You won't get better service anywhere else; at least I never have.
Dim Sum Carts for Dinner?
Ooh, speaking of which. Have you had the dim sum there. What's the report?
Pink Pony
I like the Pink Pony. Its a great hang out. More atmosphere than food, imo.
Years ago, I order this concoction that was made with lemon juice (straight up) and honey; only. I give this place points for originality.
Blue Ribbon Bakery - Good to the last lick
I can't agree with you more. Lately, its been about getting a bunch of appetizers and go to town! I think my taste buds don't want to commit to an entree.
Blue Ribbon Bakery - Good to the last lick
As if any reminder is needed. BRB serves up a great meal made with some of the freshest ingredients. I dared to take my friend, her 8 yr. old and my 21 mos. for brunch and they accommodated us with no smurk, snark, ha or hem.
We had the Country Pate. Hearty, served in the perfect temp. spicy on mustard on the side, garlicky escargots, Mushroom Raviolis that satisfied the most beastly of my carb cravings and Beef Marrow & Red Wine Sauce in all its drippy, greasy goodness.
Service was attentive and casual. May I add, easy on the eye waiters are always a bonus. ;)
Dim Sum Carts for Dinner?
Or asking for milk and sugar with your Oolong tea (at dim sum) or a cappuccino after dinner in Italy.
But I am with the OP, I would love to have Dim Sum as a dinner alternative.
good beer & good food for dinner with visiting Brit?
Le Petit Abeille (Belgian) has a vast beer menu and satisfying french-Belgian fare.
Good bakery for brunch by Union Square?
Yes. I second City Bakery. I also like Le Petit Abeille on 17th street. Their croissants stands up to some of the best and the waffles are very light and satisfying.
Alternatives to Starbucks?
Le Petite Abeille on 17th street bet. 5th and 6th has foamy good cappuccinos. While you're at it, the Belgium waffles are plenty good as well.
Just Like Mother's on Qns Blvd Forest Hills
Hi Janie,
I wonder if the waitress you are talking about is a brunette (they are mostly blonde there). We were there last sat. and there was a Polish family ready to pay for their meal and somehow an argument ensued (in Polish). It got HEATED too. I thought the waitress was going to attack the mom.
I like my meal with a little drama.
All the same, I am a fan of that mushroom barley soup. The bread they give you is not half bad either.
