GYROS in Echo Park!

That's right!

I dropped by my local Chevron a bit ago and saw a new sidewalk vendor across the street on Scott Ave. bet. Glendale and Alvarado. He saw me look and held up a sample! I shook my head "no" as I thought it might be bacon-wrapped hot dogs or just more tacos. Taco Zone is just south of him.

About to leave the Chevron, I noticed he had a vertical rotisserie (like the ones used to make tacos al pastor--my favorite and hard to get fresh off the spinner on the street or in a truck). So I wandered over. Much to my delight, Thomas said he was doing Gyros and explained what they were. I told him he didn't need to explain, just make me one. He told me to taste the sample of the gyro meat and it was delicious and still moist.

So, if your in the hood for music at night, check out these gyros. He has no sign, just a table or 3 and nice-looking fresh veggies and gyro fixins. Thomas says he's there 7 nights til 11 and til 2 on weekends (I'll let him know that clubs are hoppin' during the week and he should hang out.). Please, somebody bring him a sign! Meanwhile, he's across Scott against the legions of posters for various stuff on the wall behind him. Bring a bib.

Southern Italian/"Red Sauce" in LA

Well, you got the clueless part right. There is no low-key, unpretentious "red sauce" Italian in L.A. without pizza. Sorry. Follow the recommendations and ignore the pizza. Or go hungry. Your choice.

Melona bars in L.A.? Anyone know where?

I got hooked on these in Hawaii on an extended stay, but haven't found them in any of the big Asian markets yet. Anyone seen them? If you haven't tried them, you're in for a treat...if you can find them.
