best 100 yards of food in LA

Great question, I've wondered something similar myself.

My pick would probably be Sawtelle where at the very least unlike say K-town there's a huge selection of restaurants with a pretty good variety (though all Asian slanted).

Some other ideas:

- Grand Central Market
- 3rd Street centered around Son of a Gun & Joans
- Downtown Culver - especially with the new wave coming in

If you extend the distances, I've always held that there's a stretch of Venice Blvd between Palms and Culver that had the best collection + variety of above average ethnic eats with the Cemitas truck, Tara's, Gloria's, Thai Boom, Sofra, Brazillan spots, Indian spots, etc. Not the "best" by any imagination but you could eat the world and do pretty ok in a fairly close radius.

The church key dim sum on Sunset ????

Definitely full dinner. There's a bar scene but if you're at a table I assume it's to eat.

The church key dim sum on Sunset ????

Went there for a birthday party a few weeks back. Since it was a celebration, my excess amount of cocktails means I don't have great recall of the food. Overall it was good. Space was nice, tables were well spaced and we had a lot of room. I don't remember it being too loud. As you can imagine given the location it's a lot more "night out" than Chowhound. Guys who looked like extras from Night at the Roxbury and girls wearing skirts that made me thrilled I have a son.

Food wise I remember the carts being a little more interesting than the menu. Though as noted earlier they were sporadic and really more nibble portions. It's really more of an angle rather than a central focus. Stuff we had - the bread and pretzels from the carts was non-exceptional. I didn't like the Country Ham and sort of remember the brussel sprouts as being lackluster. I did like the tartare and rigatini. We also had a hamachi from a cart that was very good. We had a couple of other items and dessert but at that point the cocktails kicked in so I don't have a clear recollection. Though that in itself may say enough about the food. Cocktails were okay, the main draw per Yelp seems to be the canned cocktails but they were out that night so can't tell if it was because they were good or just kitschy.

I was there with 2 pescatarians (inc the Birthday girl) and while not perfect it was fine for them.

All in all it was a fine night out but I definitely wouldn't tout it as a place a Chowhound needs to go try.

Yelp Top 100 (LA edit)

I've done a bunch of these but notably Hy Mart stands out to me. I've been there a few times now and while it's good, it's basically an above average wrap place. While a number of these I'd say that you could argue if they are the "best of LA" they are at least worth a drive to try (Porto's, Ricky's, etc) Hy Mart to me isn't notable unless you work or live nearby.

Unlike the comments in the other thread, I find Yelp useful, especially when you're in an unfamiliar area and need to find something. However you always need to take into account that a some combination of customer service, general location to demographic friendly areas, special deals or social media savvy are going to impact the ratings. For example I've generally found that Mexican places that have large, cheap and stiff margaritas always have relatively higher ratings than those with straight up good food. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, because frankly sometimes I'm looking for a strong drink but it makes me check the content of the reviews before I jump to try a 4+ star rated place.

Restaurants/Food that were only in NY and now in LA

Not NYC specific but I remember the days (not so long ago) when all of my trips to New York included a stop at Pearl Oyster Bar for the closest I could find to a real lobster roll. Now there's about 10 places I can go to in LA.

Long Beach next week

Had a lunch I loved at Pier 76 Fish Grill which I believe is a short walk from the convention center. It's a casual place so more appropriate for a quick lunch but thought the food was much better than what the casual environment indicated. http://www.pier76fishgrill.com/

Zam Zam in Culver City, what do you guys get here ? Is it a meat intensive joint, or veggies and na'an, and veggie curries and chutneys are their nom de guerre ??????

You're most likely going to be limited primarily by what they have available at the time as they tend to cook limited amounts. Note it's not a look at a menu and pick an option place. Ask at the front counter what is available and they'll tell you. Service is friendly and no language barrier. They do have a steam table but haven't really seen it used in a bit. Good options to ask about are the Biryani, Kebabs and Tandoori. Also you can ask to add Naan (I like the sesame seed naan). There's no curries or chutneys that I'm aware of.

One note on the Biryani - yes it is very spicy but not in a "my mouth is burning hot" way. It's more of a flavor bomb. I'm not a hot spicy fan at all and I love Zam Zam's biryani.

East Borough Pork Banh Mi

I'll add on here, went for lunch the other day as well. Had the pork vermicelli (couldn't bring myself to spend $12 on a Bahn Mi). I'd put it in the squarely in the "great for nearby, wouldn't drive for it" category. The dish overall was light and well balanced but the sauce was missing some flavor and didn't really add in the way that I've had it in other places. That said, I really enjoyed the roll that came with it, one of the better imperial rolls I've had. All in all I'd definitely come back to try more. Also J Gold was in the house at lunch so I'd imagine a review will come soon.

Culver City corner of Centinela and Washington Blvd Food center development

Is anything new happening with it? They've had those plans forever. Realistically it going to end up being like Parcel B in downtown CC, 5 years later still a parking lot.

Taco's Leo Char Siu?

It's been a while since I've been but it used to be Friday, Sat and Sunday. The trompo comes out earlier but I used to go past 7:30 just to be safe.

Where do LAPD officers take their lunch break?

Second on Eastside market, safest place in LA at lunch time so long as you have no problem being in a room filled with holstered weapons.

Yer Favorite Culver City restaurants

Gotta admit, unless the new management came in the last month, I'm gonna disagree in this one. Sake House is my go to for easy happy hour dinner and I've been tons of times but I wouldn't put it remotely in the same league as K-Zo. One is where I go when I want high quality sushi in the area, the other is where I go for decent rolls and cheap sake.

Kay 'N Dave's in the Palisades

Haven't been to the Palisades one but there's a few scattered about LA. It's a standard chips and margaritas place, food is average, slightly healthier than others. Drinks are slightly above average. Fine for a local spot but wouldn't ever travel to one. Generally very kid friendly as well.

Google Maps of LA Dish of the Month (per aching)

Nice!

Not a dish of the month one but I'll share a map I did of various LA cheap eats in a fit of work boredom once. It's based on various Chowhound posts (including that epic cheap eats food tour one), J Gold lists and other sources. I used Batch Geo because I don't think Google Maps allows you to see notations on an iPhone, whereas this one I have bookmarked and it'll automatically directly me to the closest spot.

Hottest Taco Joint in LA

If you threw in Mexicali, possibly Coni Seafood and maybe Kogi for good measure I'd say this list pretty much sums it up.

Some carts are around the stadium (called healthy choice I believe) that offer some options but as Servorg suggests you can also bring in your food.

Havent heard or seen any news on it since it was announced. I think it's a long way off.

Would consider Curious Palate or Earls Gourmet Grub as well.

Wildcraft Sourdough Pizza

Yes - The line was "we're not doing substitutions at this time" which I took to mean during the early stages of opening so no idea if that's a policy (a little unproven to go the Father's Office route yet) or just a unknowledgeable server. The salad wasn't overdressed so it was fine but annoying nonetheless.

Wildcraft Sourdough Pizza

Tried as well - I'd second the review. Had the OG (I think - effectively the Margherita) and a salad. Both were competent - the pizza was very doughy, almost to the point of feeling undercooked. Service was a little spotty - trying to track down a server I had serval staff members tell me they weren't my server but didn't help, was told no substitutions on the salad when we asked for dressing on the side, etc. All minor so I'm marking it as first week issues. I'll try it again but it wasn't a first try home run.

Parking can be tough there on the street - if you cant find anything on 31st, I'd recommend just pulling into the complex and getting validated at Coffee Bean

PORCHETTA TRUCK ALERT

For what it's worth they told me Thursday was the last day.

No name, it's a really basic truck with (If i remember correctly) a pig spray painted on it. Look for the one with no fancy wrap.

Most lunches they are in Santa Monica where weinermobile mentions but check twitter to be sure.

Lunch in Culver City?

I'd half agree. Bland as in not worthy of Chowhound notice but not awful by any stretch. It's very kid friendly so I eat there all the time, I don't mind it but I also don't look forward to it.

Not sure where the ad agencies are (assume east near Hayden) but others not mentioned yet are fathers office (obviously), Brunello for Italian and barwatch for indiani (sp? on both)

Zam Zam now has normal hours

Drove by Zam Zam on my way home today and was shocked to find the door wide open and the open sign actually lit up (more surprising since I don't think it's lit even when they are open). Turns out starting this week they're now open all day (I think 11-9) seven days a week. They had a menu of about 10 options most of which I have never seen in my many other trips there. Tried to lamb korma, which like so much there was very, very good.

While I was getting used to the "what's the chance its open?" guessing game, its nice to have a more consistent chance at getting my biryani fix
