Recs in the San Fernando valley

I also had mixed opinions on Maradentro. Good, not great. That said I love Mercado. Definitely worth trying regardless of your Maradentro opinions.

What are some over-rated L.A. restaurants to you? Why, specifically? Only one each!

Used to live near there and went a few times. It was purely a proximity thing for me. It was the best area sushi I found when I didn't feel like paying for K-zo and didn't preplan to make reservations.

Does this look like a paella?

Not still there, been missing from the FM for a couple of months now. Only did the samples of th Paella but really miss their Spanish Omelet.

Best Mexican in Sherman Oaks?

Been doing Cactus in Studio City recently and actually pleasantly surprised. It's not great tacos but it's done in a pinch for me when I have an Asada taco craving.

Tried Maradentro soon after opening. I love, love Mercado but Mara just didn't do it for me yet. The favors were all right but just didn't combine to a greater whole. Will try again soon though.

Funny was thinking about this thread recently. Now have Mercado, Casacabel, Maradentro, Ceremony and the new place down the block from Ceremony. Amazing how times change in a few months.

Visiting with limited time—need help editing list of Mexican, tacos, Viet, Korean, Thai!

Personally, if the only reason you are doing Little Saigon is food, I'd skip it. You're looking at an hour each way with not much else of note besides restaurants around there. Pretty good Vietnamese and lot of other options in SGV.

2. Completely do-able depending on how much you can eat - I'd pick a lunch time, Thurs, Fri, Sat or Sun when Guerrilla is downtown and do Guerrilla, Mexicali, Guisados on Sunset and then Ricky's. The others would be out of the too out of the way, though depending on what time you may be able to start at Mariscos Jalisco downtown. Also make sure the Dodgers aren't playing when you go as that will add quite a bit of travel time.

4. I'm partial to Scoops - several locations including Chinatown

Here's a map I made up once - helpful for finding something close when you are out and about - most of the places you list are on here:

Leo's Tacos - 4 Locations? How are they?

Wow great find. I've tried the one on Glendale near Echo Park. I'd say it was about 95% of the way the same to the one on Venice/La Brea. Still great and flavorful, something was slightly missing in the char but it also could have been an off night.

Still haven't figured out hours - I learned from my many trips to the Venice one that you should only go when the Trompo is out so I've only done the drive to the Echo Park one later at night, rather than risk it.

Fish Tacos between LAX and Marina del Ray?

Sure and you have your opinion and I have mine (albeit quite probably snobbish). Nothing wrong with that. I'm not a fan of Rubios and though the OP should have additional options, including Wienermobiles' probably best one. Apologies if that came off as a personal attack, it was not intended.

Fish Tacos between LAX and Marina del Ray?

Sorry, I'm going to disagree with the recommendation of Rubio's which to me is like telling someone who liked burgers to go to McDonalds. The defacto LAX recommendation is Coni'Seafood for their smoked marlin tacos (and more). If you're looking for something more traditional - Wahoo's in Marina Del Rey will do in a pinch (though admittedly not much better than Rubios)

Kay N Dave's in Culver City

We used to go quite a bit when we lived in the area and prior to the Culver City location to the old Pico location. I think the appeal on Kay n Dave's has been a few things:

1. Family friendly
2. Nice patio
3. Above average drinks
4. Lite-ish food compared other chain Mexican places.

I always looked at it as - sometimes you want some tacos and a margarita and it's a easy, decent option (especially if you have a young child). It's definitely not a you should travel to eat here kind of place though.

Come to think of it, I don't think I ever found my goto item on the menu. The fish tacos were ok.

post-Señor Fred, Sherman Oaks

It's supposed to be an Italian seafood focused place called Ono and Marlin. There was a menu floating around at one point that looked interesting. That was a while ago though so don't know if plans changed.

Hollywood Area and Universal Studios

Not great options for celebs in that immediate area. The original Katsuya is always good for a sighting or two, especially early weekend nights. I'd also try the Sunday farmers market in Studio City, the paps are easy to spot and you can follow them to the celebs.

Best General Tso Chicken in LA?

I grew up in Brooklyn and your list above was pretty much the contents of at least s weekly dinner for us. Amazing similarity, I never realized how common it was (though I'd add Lol Mein as well). Tso's was always on the menu at our local places though not something I would order. I think likely because it was always listed as spicy and I as much more spice adverse at the time.

Best Mexican in Sherman Oaks?

Liquor license indicates it's Maradentro. All I can find is that it's Mexican seafood and was set to open a location in Eagle Rock: http://la.eater.com/2014/2/4/6286317/...

Need Rec for Good Meet Up Place in Studio City or Thereabouts

Granville maybe? It's not amazing food but hits all the other notes you mention. Also Warrens Blackboard is well liked here but the chef left recently, I haven't been since to see what impact that's had.

Dutch Crunch Bread @ PAVILIONS

To follow-up on this thread if anyone is looking. In Studio City/Burbank area:

- Ralphs at Ventura/Vineland looked at me weird when I asked
- Vons at Ventura/Laurel didn't have it but said they could make it for me with a days notice
- Pavillions on Alameda in Burbank had it and seems to have a regularly (there was a labelled bin for it)

Christmas eve tradition back again!

Take a Bao (Studio City) - what's good?

If you have nothing good to say...

My wife makes me go every couple of months because she likes it and it's an easy take out option. My take away after trying a good chunk of the menu is that I generally dislike the Baos the least (usually the pork ones). I tried the bibimbap and only remember not wanting to order it again. It's not that the place is bad, I just personally have yet to find a single thing there that I'd want to order a second time.

How's Mo-Chica now that Chef Ricardo Zarate is Gone?

Pure speculation here but Spark Studio City is a few weeks away from debuting their new concept according to their Facebook page. Since the last time a Spark debuted a new concept it became Picca, any chance there's a connection?

Or could be total coincidence....

Where to go for good "jack of all trades"Japanese restaurant?

Been pleasantly surprised by the rolls there. Not that I would have expected otherwise but it's not a core competency

For what it's worth, K-zo never felt young kid friendly to me. Probably more in my mind as the staff never raised an issue but I never felt comfortable with the 5 yr old there whereas I have no problem bringing him to Daichan.
