Chicken & Rice Truck - anyone been?

Japadog worth trying? I'm pretty over the truck thing (too many bad ones). But if there's any there worth hitting I'm game.

Thanks for doing that. I saw it come up on Today's Universal food truck feed and considered trying it. Now glad I didn't.

Katsu-ya v. SugarFISH: Pre-Hollywood Bowl Dinner

I've done both quite a bit. As others said Katsu-ya will be packed but reservations are usually fairly easy to get. It's much better than the SBE Katsu-yas and I completely disagree that it's only a place for beautiful people/porn stars. That said, it's our neighborhood goto sushi spot, is it the best in the immediate area? Likely not, but not all of us want to drop $200+ on a sushi dinner.

If you want straight up only sushi Sugarfish is your spot, if you want cooked dishes, etc I'd do Katsu-ya.

Any good new(ish) restuarants in and around the San Fernando Valley that are a must try?

I prefer to think of Sherman Oaks as west Studio City. :)

Second the Warren's recommendation though if you make reservations request the patio as the interior leaves something to be desired.

Not as newish but Girasol fits the description as well.

Tacos Leo's now on the eastside!!!

Ok drove by today on the way back from dinner and couldn't resist the urge to find out if it was really true. I used to live 10 mins away from the other Leo and have eaten there at least 30+ times. I'd say this outpost is about 95% the same, the pastor had the same flavoring and they used the same tortillas. It was missing a bit of the char, the Venice blvd one usually had about 10% of the slices with a good burnt texture which gave it a slight crunch. Though to be fair depending on the timing, I've run into that problem at the Venice one as well. Also the Pineapple slices were hit and miss, some to small, some non existent. Regardless 95% is good enough for me plus the lines were away shorter. Now if only Zam Zam would open a closer branch I really never need to head back to my old hood again.

What do you think about 'mandatory' Valet Parking?

It's also illegal in the city of LA. They passed an ordinance last year which banned valets from parking on city streets.

In my area I'd guess about 50% of the street spots are taken by Valets on Fri and Sat nights. One of these days I'm going to become the grumpy guy standing on the corner with a video camera.

Low priced sake in LA area?

Nothing like True Sake that I've found, but Mitsuwa tends to have a decent selection.

Santa Monica Pier Carousel ideas??????

The seafood tasted like it had been in sitting in tanks for a long time.

But seriously, it's bring in only. I think we did Joes pizza.

And I was responding to curlygirlm, not the op...

Just as a side note - we did my son's 3rd birthday downstairs at the Aquarium and would highly recommend it. The kids had a great time, the staff was great and it was relatively inexpensive. A first birthday is probably too early but worth keeping in mind.

Thanks for the recommendations. I tried La Ventura a few months back and it was a one and done for me. Not comfort food enough, not high end enough. Just sort of blah. The sweet salt folks have a Mexican place coming according to eater so I'm keeping fingers crossed for that.

Thank you. I'm Studio City side about 3/4 mile directly west of Warren's. Looks like your list is very close to mine. Just looking to expand my Sunday night eat in or take out list (since sadly Daichan isn't open Sundays or else I'd do that every night). Haven't tried Manzano so that's now bookmarked.

NS1, since your neighborhood also seems to be mine, any other local places you'd recommend? I've bookmarked the other recent studio city threads but curious about any local standbys.

Finally got around to trying it and would completely agree with the review. Had several of the starters, the pork chop and chicken. Food is all very good - nothing wildly creative just basics served well. That he worked at Westside Tavern makes sense as I would say there's some similarities. Definitely a spot I will return to.

LA Vacation- Where to eat - Hotspots and Value for Money Kings?

If it helps, I mapped out a bunch of these places (along with the cheaper spots on the LA Weekly & LA Times annual lists) here: http://batchgeo.com/map/LA-Cheap-Eats

There's a map on the original link but it doesn't work on iPhone if you're mobile (and on an iphone).

Al Pastor Tacos:

Ok, so finally got there today and..it's definitely not Leo. Granted probably unfair to compare the Pastor to one of the best in the city but was hoping to have a close equivalent on this side of the hill. The spit was out though he pulled my meat from one of the hot trays. Bad start though it tasted like it came off the spit not that long ago. Overall, It was lacking a bit in flavor, definitely better than a generic taco spot but not as richly marinated as I would like, the main favors were the condiments, not the meat. Also got some over charred and fatty parts. Overall I'd rate it a 3 1/2 out of five, not bad but not great either.

101 noodle express

Very good, definitely worth the trip and as my first non dim sum foray into SGV a good precursor to trying other places in the future. Got the beef roll (of course) which lived up to its billing. One of the Dan Dan noodles - forget which one - which wasn't instantly spectacular but by the end I was thankful I didn't live nearby or else I'd eat it once a week. Also got the shrimp dumplings and pan fried pork ones both were good though I'd imagine better ones can be found elsewhere.

101 noodle express

Alhambra it was. Cross another off the must try list. Thanks all!

Culver City Breakfast

Been a while since I lived over there but near to you I'd do Green Peas or LA Spice. A little further Curious Palate and Earl's Gourmet Grub are the closest to Food and Clementine in the area.

Metro is fine for what it is, I never saw why it got so much credit for being anything more than a neighborhood breakfast/lunch spot. It is very kid friendly though.
