Interesting. Never had a chance to go even though it's right near me. Eater reported that Eggplant is switching as well.

New List To Debate--Tacos!

I can eat like 10 at a time. It's the #1 thing I miss after I moved. To each their own.

Thanks for the recommendations. I tried La Ventura a few months back and it was a one and done for me. Not comfort food enough, not high end enough. Just sort of blah. The sweet salt folks have a Mexican place coming according to eater so I'm keeping fingers crossed for that.

Thank you. I'm Studio City side about 3/4 mile directly west of Warren's. Looks like your list is very close to mine. Just looking to expand my Sunday night eat in or take out list (since sadly Daichan isn't open Sundays or else I'd do that every night). Haven't tried Manzano so that's now bookmarked.

NS1, since your neighborhood also seems to be mine, any other local places you'd recommend? I've bookmarked the other recent studio city threads but curious about any local standbys.

Finally got around to trying it and would completely agree with the review. Had several of the starters, the pork chop and chicken. Food is all very good - nothing wildly creative just basics served well. That he worked at Westside Tavern makes sense as I would say there's some similarities. Definitely a spot I will return to.

Yeah. It wasn't fun playing the "which line am I in?" game between the backups at Jalisco and Jarritos.

LA Vacation- Where to eat - Hotspots and Value for Money Kings?

If it helps, I mapped out a bunch of these places (along with the cheaper spots on the LA Weekly & LA Times annual lists) here: http://batchgeo.com/map/LA-Cheap-Eats

There's a map on the original link but it doesn't work on iPhone if you're mobile (and on an iphone).

Al Pastor Tacos:

Ok, so finally got there today and..it's definitely not Leo. Granted probably unfair to compare the Pastor to one of the best in the city but was hoping to have a close equivalent on this side of the hill. The spit was out though he pulled my meat from one of the hot trays. Bad start though it tasted like it came off the spit not that long ago. Overall, It was lacking a bit in flavor, definitely better than a generic taco spot but not as richly marinated as I would like, the main favors were the condiments, not the meat. Also got some over charred and fatty parts. Overall I'd rate it a 3 1/2 out of five, not bad but not great either.

101 noodle express

Very good, definitely worth the trip and as my first non dim sum foray into SGV a good precursor to trying other places in the future. Got the beef roll (of course) which lived up to its billing. One of the Dan Dan noodles - forget which one - which wasn't instantly spectacular but by the end I was thankful I didn't live nearby or else I'd eat it once a week. Also got the shrimp dumplings and pan fried pork ones both were good though I'd imagine better ones can be found elsewhere.

Culver City Breakfast

Been a while since I lived over there but near to you I'd do Green Peas or LA Spice. A little further Curious Palate and Earl's Gourmet Grub are the closest to Food and Clementine in the area.

Metro is fine for what it is, I never saw why it got so much credit for being anything more than a neighborhood breakfast/lunch spot. It is very kid friendly though.

Commonwealth Restaurant - Burbank

I'd say so, and I think that would be the case outside of Burbank as well (in an area with more variety). I think I was hoping based on the Yelp reviews and Westways write up that it was a new amazing find and I came away thinking it was solid but wasn't blown away.

Commonwealth Restaurant - Burbank

Ok finally tried it the other day. My take away was that it was pretty good but it’s not topping my list of places I needed to go back to immediately. We did six items, everything on the menu was tapas sized. The beets were a standout for me very sweet and the ingredients mixed well. I also liked the dumplings quite a bit. The albacore scoops were good though not unique from other versions of that dish I’ve had before. The fried chicken was a major misstep, more fried than chicken and not really any distinctive flavor. Not remembering which other items we got but overall felt very nice but not outstanding.

The space is tiny but I didn’t have the feeling of being completely on top of my neighbor. Service was extremely attentive and staff was very friendly. Beer & Wine (with Sangria and wine based cocktails). In all I think we came up at about $120 pre tip with 6 items, dessert and 5 drinks for two people.

If you live or work in the area I’d definitely recommend you check it out but I don’t see it making the next list of 100 best restaurants or anything like that.

2 days in LA for fish and tacos

Not to be a naysayer cause I love Portos but would you recommend a Cuban sandwich when the OP is from NYC? I don't think I had many when I was in NY but Cuban feels like a just as good in New York kind of thing.

Best Pizza (NY Style) in LA

I lived the first 25 years of my life in NYC. The last 10 or so in LA. I think there's lots of good pizza here. So we have opposite opinions. Since we both have significant amounts of time in both cities with roughly the same ratios, the only difference being that you are older the only conclusion I can draw is the your taste buds have deteriorated with age. I better start eating now before I start losing my joy of pizza and feel the need to dredge up 5 year old threads to complain about it.

I've been dying to try this but haven't been able to line-up the baby sitting yet. I believe it's the team from Orris on sawtelle which I loved back in the day.

Grimaldi's Pizza in El Segundo Review:

I can go even further back, I used to go when it was called Patsy's in the early 90s. Back then Patsy would come by every table to say hello and half the patrons looked like extras from the Godfather. It was my first choice on where to go for my HS graduation dinner and for years it was my first stop whenever I would come back to Brooklyn.

Church Key

I think it was a joke in reference to the other thread about the CNN best Dim Sum places list which includes Church Key.

Church Key was discussed earlier on another thread. All in all tepid praise, I think most liked it, no one loved it: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/922901

best 100 yards of food in LA

Great question, I've wondered something similar myself.

My pick would probably be Sawtelle where at the very least unlike say K-town there's a huge selection of restaurants with a pretty good variety (though all Asian slanted).

Some other ideas:

- Grand Central Market
- 3rd Street centered around Son of a Gun & Joans
- Downtown Culver - especially with the new wave coming in

If you extend the distances, I've always held that there's a stretch of Venice Blvd between Palms and Culver that had the best collection + variety of above average ethnic eats with the Cemitas truck, Tara's, Gloria's, Thai Boom, Sofra, Brazillan spots, Indian spots, etc. Not the "best" by any imagination but you could eat the world and do pretty ok in a fairly close radius.

The church key dim sum on Sunset ????

Went there for a birthday party a few weeks back. Since it was a celebration, my excess amount of cocktails means I don't have great recall of the food. Overall it was good. Space was nice, tables were well spaced and we had a lot of room. I don't remember it being too loud. As you can imagine given the location it's a lot more "night out" than Chowhound. Guys who looked like extras from Night at the Roxbury and girls wearing skirts that made me thrilled I have a son.

Food wise I remember the carts being a little more interesting than the menu. Though as noted earlier they were sporadic and really more nibble portions. It's really more of an angle rather than a central focus. Stuff we had - the bread and pretzels from the carts was non-exceptional. I didn't like the Country Ham and sort of remember the brussel sprouts as being lackluster. I did like the tartare and rigatini. We also had a hamachi from a cart that was very good. We had a couple of other items and dessert but at that point the cocktails kicked in so I don't have a clear recollection. Though that in itself may say enough about the food. Cocktails were okay, the main draw per Yelp seems to be the canned cocktails but they were out that night so can't tell if it was because they were good or just kitschy.

I was there with 2 pescatarians (inc the Birthday girl) and while not perfect it was fine for them.

All in all it was a fine night out but I definitely wouldn't tout it as a place a Chowhound needs to go try.

Yelp Top 100 (LA edit)

I've done a bunch of these but notably Hy Mart stands out to me. I've been there a few times now and while it's good, it's basically an above average wrap place. While a number of these I'd say that you could argue if they are the "best of LA" they are at least worth a drive to try (Porto's, Ricky's, etc) Hy Mart to me isn't notable unless you work or live nearby.

Unlike the comments in the other thread, I find Yelp useful, especially when you're in an unfamiliar area and need to find something. However you always need to take into account that a some combination of customer service, general location to demographic friendly areas, special deals or social media savvy are going to impact the ratings. For example I've generally found that Mexican places that have large, cheap and stiff margaritas always have relatively higher ratings than those with straight up good food. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, because frankly sometimes I'm looking for a strong drink but it makes me check the content of the reviews before I jump to try a 4+ star rated place.

Restaurants/Food that were only in NY and now in LA

Not NYC specific but I remember the days (not so long ago) when all of my trips to New York included a stop at Pearl Oyster Bar for the closest I could find to a real lobster roll. Now there's about 10 places I can go to in LA.
