Donuts!

Anna's are OK - the honey glazed are similar in style to a KrispyKreme - very light and melty - without much substance. All of the others have more to them and are better to me -

Boston Hound looking for a One-Night Recommendation [San Francisco]

In town for a couple of nights on conference. I have one free night. Looking for something newish and exciting on the SF food scene. All food styles are fair game - looking for a nice sit down dinner - no food trucks or amazing hot dogs (already hitting up Los Shucos for lunch). Last year I did Heirloom Cafe, which I enjoyed a lot. Staying near Ferry bldg, but happy to jump in a cab.
Thanks -

Lineage: Thanks for being in my neighborhood

An exception for someone who cannot sit up at the bar is an expected accommodation, so I do not begrudge them the extra $1.50/oyster we were charged for sitting at a table (even though we had 18.....). We were at our table for almost 3 hours, and had a full dinner afterward with bottles of wine. Bar Dollar Oysters are meant to draw in a happy hour crowd - and the bar seats turn over much quicker than our 4-top did, justifying the difference in pricing. Agreeing to these seemingly arbitrary pricing differences is what keeps our favorite places in business.

Lineage: Thanks for being in my neighborhood

Great dinner there last week (my first, sadly). We tried to get dollar oysters at the table, but were denied. And I was with some real regulars. Consider yourself lucky.

Skewered duck hearts

MidWest Grill in Cambridge, a Brazilian churrascaria, always has chicken hearts on the rotation, but you need to request them if you want them to come around to your table -

Underwhelmed at 51 Lincoln.

Not a dissimilar experience a while back -
We had 8:30 reservations for 4 (a bit late for my taste) but the Hostess told us to come early to try to get early seating. We arrived at 7:45 and settled in the bar for some drinks. 8:15, 8:30, 8:45 and 9 roll around. We've been up to the hostess couple of times just to let them know we were still in the bar if they were looking for us. By 9:30, we decide we don't really need dinner any longer, so we order some bar snacks and go to tell the hostess, who is seating a 4some with 9 pm reservations!!!! That's when I lose it and demand the manager who was very apologetic, blah blah blah. He catches our bar snack order and sends out plate upon plate upon plate of stuff to us to make amends. Champagne comes around, and our glasses are never empty for the rest of the night. In the end, we shut the place down (we didn't start until 10 really), and he comps us the entire evening, with a gift card to go. It was a really nice gesture, but the gift card is still sitting in a drawer somewhere....

If you are in a pinch for rice, Sur La Table always carries Bomba or Calasparra rice - expensive but NECESSARY.
I make paella every New Years Eve.

Del Friscos/RW

Ate there this weekend.
Very crowded - 30 minute delay for our 7:15 reservation on a Saturday night.
The steak was very good. The sides were very good as well. The wine list huge.
But really, $45 for a steak and the privilege of being served by very leggy waitresses - I'm over that.

Pho is very nice! Had it last night for the first time. Nice flavoured broth - lots of ?5 spice, perhaps more than I like, but it was very aromatic.

Yakitori Zai

I took my adventurous 9 year old a couple of weeks ago there for dinner. Everything we sampled was great, but as everyone has clearly posted, it is a bit pricey for the amount of food. My only other concern were the missing nasty bits - no hearts, no livers etc, and we were there early on a Thursday evening so I do not think that they had already run out.

The chicken neck and oysters were great. We each had our own skewer of chicken butts (seriously the bestest fattiest yummiest piece of meat on the bird) - these were grilled perfectly. We had gizzards and knee cartilage - not for the faint of heart when it comes to odd textures - the gizzards were better and I think demonstrate their culinary abilities - no grittiness and grilled well.

Would have liked to have seen a couple of larger sized skewers of relatively simpler selections so one could actually feel as if they had eaten a meal which I would gladly supplement with odder bits.

L'Espalier

Just did the Summer Tasting Menu this past weekend - Don't be fooled by the 'mere' 4 savory courses on offer (Lobster, Foie, Salmon, Lamb). Portion sizes of these seemed more generous than when I dined there exactly 1 year ago. There were 4 unannounced appetizers / amuse bouches, a pre-dessert dessert, post-dessert petits fours and the generous cheese course (5 spectacular cheeses). Another cheddar brioche - why, yes, don't mind if I do.
I am not sure I could ever get through the tasting Journey.
Oh, and by the way, it was all spectacular.

My first meal at Island Creek Oyster Bar -- not great

Blue Points are East Coast - Long Island sound I think. Kumamotos are Japanese and are cultivated on the West Coast, but are not native. But they are excellent.

My first meal at Island Creek Oyster Bar -- not great

I had my first meal there last night - I thought it was quite good, in fact. Based on rec's from CHounders, I stuck to the classics. We had a dozen varied oysters (East Coast of course....), some Oyster Sliders and some fish ceviche (comp'ed by the kitchen as we were already on our 2nd bottle of wine....). The oysters were excellent and nicely chosen by the waitstaff, the slider delicious but predictable. Cevice was fine. The standout on the evening was the Lobster Roe Noodles. The braised short rib give it an unctuous mouth feel that the seafood alone could not deliver. Nice sized portion, fresh peas and a lobster knuckle. Wonderful. The 3rd bottle of wine helped as well.
I'll definitely go back.

Banh Mi Ngon opening in West Roxbury next week

Tried it last night - Mixed review - Hopefully the negatives are just kinks that need to be worked out:
I tried 3 sandwiches: Grilled Chicken / Shredded Chicken / Sardines. I got there at 6:40 pm, and they were out of beef (and I don't do pork) so my choices were limited. While running out of food is a good sign for business, hopefully they will get their quantities in order over time. The grilled chicken was pretty good, and better than the shredded breast meat chicken. Not a ton of meat in either sandwich. Lots of cilantro, but not a lot of pickled veg. Fiery jalapenos (which I asked for). The bread might have been the highlight. They were using a radio-shack toaster over to warm the buns, which was cute, but inefficient.
Also had some fresh spring rolls ($3) which were good.
Can't ask for much more for $4/sandwich ($3.95 for sardines (?)), but I think it took a full 20 minutes to get my order done - which seems odd for 'fast food'.
I will definitely go back - Banh Mi is a tasty diversion from sandwiches across the street at the Real Deal. I am hoping they do well in the neighborhood - they might need a little time to get into gear, but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone seen a menu yet? It is not posted on their website yet.
I am sincerely hoping that there will be many grilled nasty bits on sticks. I'm tired of driving to New York just to get good Yakitori.....

Killer Roast Lamb Sandwich - Greek Corner Cambridge

There is a great Greek community in Montreal. It is possible that the emigres all came from the same region of Greece, which might explain some of the culinary differences.

Need Help with Choosing a CSA for Summer '12

1/2 share at Stillman's was always plenty for 2 people - worked out to 3 vs. 6 zuccini, 1 vs. 2 varieties of kale, smaller vs. larger container of blueberries, 1 vs 2 Red Peppers, and fewer pick-whatever-you-want options, but never silly things like 1 ear of corn.

Need Help with Choosing a CSA for Summer '12

While I have no comparison to make with other CSAs, we've done Stillman's for 5 consecutive years. If that is not a ringing endorsement, don't know what is.
Produce is great, half share option was perfect until our family grew to justify the full and the Stillman family are all lovely. We're signing up with them again this year -

Apparently the Whole Foods in Dedham has their own smoking outfit - we've bought nice smoked salmon there that was unavailable in other WF stores -

CSA Rating

Four or five years into our Stillman's half-share - Have never had a complaint. Our box is often too big for the family and Glenn lets us swap things at our discretion when there is lots to go around.
Comment on the thread: Being a member of a CSA gives me much more of a visceral 'this feels right' feeling than being able to compare whose tomatoes were better. So choose a convenient farm, talk to the farmer, and support local agriculture. You won't be disappointed regardless of the crop.
Just my 2 cents.

Restaurant Week!

Toro follows the Estragon model as well - majority of the menu available:
For RW, table of 2 gets 2 pinchos, 5 tapas and 2 deserts.

Some dishes normally considered pinchos were 'upgraded' to tapas on the menu, so depending on how you order, overall you might save a few buck off the regular menu pricing. Wasn't thinking this way when I was there, so I just looked at the menu - doing the math, 2 RW covers basically amounted to what we ordered anyway, and we ended up essentially getting free desert (2 slices of manchego and 1 small churro).

Clearly saving $10 on 2 small desert plates is not motivation to go to Toro - it was really good (but really loud) on Tuesday night.
