Nut Free Ice Cream Parlors or Trucks in the Boston area (not Rita's)
Yes I actually had an ice cream maker that I wasn't using but to her point, it is not the same as going to an ice cream parlor and ordering ice cream "at a real store". I feel her frustration and I have seen a few nut free bakeries but with more and more people suffering, I think it would be great to have a nut free ice cream parlor option! Maybe someone out there will read this and open one for all my peanut/tree nut allergy friends. :)
Nut Free Ice Cream Parlors or Trucks in the Boston area (not Rita's)
Hello, I have a dear friend whose daughter is allergic to all tree nuts and peanuts. She has been going to Rita's in Salem as they have been nut free and a very happy summer haven for the family to go. Unfortunately Rita's is now carrying ice cream with peanuts and Resee's products. Such a sad day for my friend! Does anyone know of a nut free ice cream parlor or an ice cream truck that is nut free? With all the nut allergies, I'm surprised this is so hard to find! TIA!
mail order pastrami from Katz
I might suggest going with a fantastic mail order (and store if you are lucky to live in the Ann Arbor, MI area) Zingermans. I have ordered many items for gifts and their Reuben Sandwich Kits are always well received. They have a lot of great items and their customer service in impecable.

caterer recommendation for North Shore area(Hamilton, Ipswich, Marblehead, Wenham, Beverly)
Hands down TSH Catering in Essex. They try and source local ingredients and are a wonderful group as well. They are friendly, professional and really care about their food!
Looking for a great pasta recipe with either cream sauce or tomato-cream. Please help :)
The link is for a recipe called "baked-pasta-with-tomato-cream-and-five-cheeses." This is a great recipe which I had the pleasure of eating at the restaurant that made it famous, Al Forno in Providence, RI.
You cannot go wrong with it. I also have subbed out the sauce with Rao's Marinara when I was in a hurry and it still was stellar. Enjoy!

Cafe du Monde Beignet mix
It's not in the close Boston area but certainly closer than going to NOLA. I know I saw it there when I was last there along with the chikory coffee. But I would call before taking the trek up. It is a great store with fabulous prices!

The White Apron Catering - Dover, NH - any feedback?
I have a friend who is not from the area and is considering having The White Apron cater their wedding. I don't see a lot online and I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback or reviews on this company. Apparently they've been around for quite some time but they have only a home page on their website which leads me to believe they are just getting that up and running now.
But my friend wants to know how is their food? Pricing? Service? She is very particular and meticulous and I want to make sure for her that they are at the level she is expecting.
Thanks for any thoughts you might have!
"HIGH END" caterer for wedding in Lakes region, NH - recs pls?
Hello,
I'm trying to research a caterer who is used to a "high end" wedding and that is local to the Lakes region, specifically the Squam Lakes area of NH. My initial searches aren't coming up with much. I'm wondering if anyone has some great recommendations or if I should consider having a caterer from the Boston area come up? Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!
Quiet French restaurant - preferably downtown
Park Avenue Bistro - very lovely and warm. Food and wine selections are terrific as is the service. :) It's one of my GO TO places in NYC
need caterer for corporate lunch on North Shore
TSH Catering - Tim Hopkins does the most amazing job. They are in Essex and you will not be disappointed. I have used them for many types of functions and events and they blow everyone else out of the water. :)
Caterers - Berkshires (Recs needed)
These kind of posts upset me greatly for the poor couples, and also because I am "in the business". It constantly surprises me as to how many bad businesses there are, taking advantage of people. It might also help to ask for references, although I doubt they would give you a bad one. But in general, asking how many weddings they have done in the past and asking for references could help you. Ultimately, I always recommend people go with a few key pieces: 1) Trust your gut, 2) do your research (or hire someone to do it for you) and 3) have a contract that protects you from such a situation. There is no way that asalvador should still be waiting for a deposit! (and possibly a final payment). Good luck to all!
Overheard at next table...."Sorry, your card has been decined..."
Truly, it is an honor to read such a lovely post. :) Especially when you feel like your life is falling apart all around you, it's nice to hear about an act of kindness. :)

GK: Your story made my day. :) I can't believe people have negative things to say and have to put such a rotten spin on a simple act of kindness.
I've been that person with less than $18 once too. My now ex boyfriend took a LOT of money from me and I am now trying to repair my life. But I believe in KARMA. And hopefully that young man will take your wonderful act of kindness and help someone else out when they see someone that needs it.
I have been humbled by the many acts of kindness from my friends and even strangers in my darkest of times. It is those little sprinkles of stars in the midnight sky that help you see that there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel.
Thank you for sharing your story so we can remember to be kind and be thankful for what we have. :)
Sweet Thyme Bakery - Lexington Center
Sweet Thyme Bakery in Lexington Center opened 2 days ago and since I work in the area, I decided to go in this morning to buy something and check it out. They are located in the old Depot Square Gallery Space which is diagonally across the street from the Library and next door to Eastern Bank. Apparantely they are a "Chinese Bakery with French training". The space is very clean and sparse. A counter of baked goods and shelves off to the right with pre-wrapped breads and cookies. I decided to get their "Yogurt Cheese Bars" in Pumpkin Chocolate and Blueberry Chocolate. The woman behind the counter doesn't speak great English so it was a little difficult to understand what they were but I figured out they are like cheesecake. There were some odd flavors like Sesame and Rose Raisin.
The ingredients on the pumpkin bars read: Pumpkin, Walnuts, Cheese, Yogurt, Eggs, Choc. I threw out the wrapper so I might have the ingredients in the wrong order but I specifically picked them because they didn't have flour written on the ingredients (or sugar!). And no flavoring - vanilla? No salt? They are wrapped in waxed paper so you can't really see what you're getting.
When I opened them, I was kind of surprised to see a "crust" which I figured out what like an Oreo Cookie crust. As a person who has MANY friends who food allergies that range from moderate to severe, I found this a little off-putting that cookie crumbs (and their ingredients) weren't written on the label. And to me, one of the best parts of pumpkin is to have it spiced with warm yummy spices. There was literally no spices and I didn't detect any vanilla (which would fit since it wasn't on the list of ingreds!!)
The Blueberry Chocolate - same thing. I thought the cookie crust actually tasted a little stale. All in all, pretty bland. I really wasn't impressed.
They don't sell any beverages - yet - and most of their items are packaged in bags so you can't just buy one (unless it's one of those "yogurt cheese bars").
Maybe their breads will be better but until they can get a little better about labeling their ingredients, I'm not apt to go back. I do find in intreresting that Nourish, Cake, the new Deli and now this Bakery have all opened within months of each other. We're all sadly trying to figure out how long it takes before they all leave.... :(
I'll be curious to hear other reviews as people find their way here.
They have a URL but when I checked it today, the website is under construction.
Top Chef Masters Semi-Final 2nd Round (spoilers)
i've generally found that anything other than butter separates and makes it oily. That being said, wouldn't it make more sense to list the ingredient as something other than butter? Right?
Top Chef Masters Semi-Final 2nd Round (spoilers)
I just posted the recipe GHG as I didn't see your reply until just now but I am also confused as to how a recipe that is published as vegan then has butter in the recipe? A taf confusing... :)
Top Chef Masters Semi-Final 2nd Round (spoilers)
What is interesting is that butter IS part of the ingredients on the website:
ALMOND BRITTLE
•2-1/2 cup granulated sugar
•1 cup water
•1/4 cup Agave syrup
•1 Cup toasted almonds
•1 tablespoon baking soda
•Pinch of salt
•2 tablespoons unsalted butter
•1 tablespoons vanilla extract
•Semi sweet chocolate, melted, for garnish

So... dear Chowhounders, how is this defined as vegan?

ok - good to know. I thought I could find something but I guess not. Thanks!

Thanks energy! I should have said that I'm not looking for a hotel setting as I don't want to get involved with a rental fee, etc. Just looking for a space to have friends get together, have cash bar, have some food, etc. Thanks though!! Much appreciated!
Special Occassion Brunch
Boston Harbor Hotel does a great job. And valet parking is validated as well. I think it's a great place for a special occasion!

Hello, I'm hoping all you wonderful San Fran CH can help me. I'm trying to arrange for a birthday party for around 150. Looking for a cool and modern vibe. Something near the San Fran Marriott Hotel would be ideal but is not a deal breaker. The guest of honor is in the hospitality business so impecable service is key. Budget not entirely an issue but presentation is key! TIA! Looking forward to your responses!
After concert dining near Carnegie Hall
There are a lot of choices in the area but as far as late night and wide variety of menu choices, this has been a good choice for our diverse group. :)
After concert dining near Carnegie Hall
Hello - I go to NYC a few times a year and at least one of those times is to be at Carnegie Hall with friends. One year we took a cab and went to Cafeteria which was "fine" but not really worth the cab ride imho, And then I found out about Landmarc through CH and it has been our go to ever since. It's not the place to go for WOW food but everything is certainly good and some of it even fun. It services a large number of tastes, palates and desires and some people want dessert, some want a full dinner and some want a burger. You can have that all here. They don't do wines by the glass but from what I understand they do have 1/2 bottles and they are very reasonably priced. And one of the last times we were there the conductor from the concert was also there, so that was fun. Enjoy NYC! And do let us know where you end up!
Sundae Monstrosity
Perhaps you could call and put in a special request? My thought is that these days people are willing to take suggestions. I would almost think that a special sundae made just for your son and his friends would be something to make a great memory for his 11th bday. Enjoy!
Dinner date after Ice Skating
You should go to Serendipity 3 and get an order of frozen hot chocolate to share (if the date is going well). Maybe you can even sit at the Star Table. If you've never seen the movie Serendipity, I'd recommend that. Or... if the date is going well, you could suggest watching that together for date #3. :) Have fun.
Urgent help! Need a FANTASTIC caterer ASAP.
nabigus, if you're running out of time and you have a caterer that is avaialble and has given you a price, why wouldn't you go with them? PLus they have a bistro so you can go and have a meal and check out their food directly. Just my two cents, but if you are under the gun and have an option, I'd be running with that and not waste too much energy on other things. PAC really has done some amazing events that I've been at. :)
