Soho Beach house.
@Morgan, first you went for the friends event and have not been back not fair to the establishment. Dont expect you to be a food critic but it is def worth another visit It is an opportunity to work out the kinks and shouldn't be shot in the foot for that. I have been a few times and actually have been impressed the staff and management pay to the table. I came also to a friends & family dinner and was expecting they typical required hotel restaurant and have been impressed every time from breakdpfast to lunch and dinner!
The menu is not reinventing the wheel, but does have great highlights. The pasta bolognese is one example, but a good Italian restaurant is not a standout if they can't do that well. Their beet salad is very fresh and a go to when I want something local.
The one thing I am happy to realize on subsequent visits is that their red meat menu was way too expensive and was edited. I say go and attempt to touch the clouds, you won't crash and burn upon re-entry with this one.
Any GREEN falafel between South Beach and Boca Raton?
Actually Michael's Genuine has it on their lunch menu. Pretty straightforward. Wouldn't say it's the best but it did suffice.
Restaurants during Easter week
I need an answer for this as well as we will be in BCN Easter Week and want to make a reservation for Good Friday which as a "recovering catholic" is one of the holiest days of the week!
Eating report: Madrid y Barcelona
reading your above post (Barcelona Part 2) is like reading my itinerary that I am putting together for our trip the end of March, my only concern is we will be there Easter Week, so I am not sure the schedule of establishments and expect starting on Good Friday to Easter Sunday things might come to a hault.
Places on my radar in Madrid and Barcelona -- good choices?
this has been a great resource for tips. While I find that NYTimes travel section online is a great resource, this really helps to get to the nitty gritty choices in BCN! I won't torture you with questions as all the answers are on here if you simply look! I just started checking the threads out so you may see a stupid question from me down the road closer to our departure 3/30 for BCN!
Great tips again! Thanks guys.
New or Coming to Miami / Dade - 2010 Edition
the kinks I had last night left me feeling guilty and sorry I went. @ (Poison) Ivy in the Grove
South Beach or no for foodie/Chowhounder
will not touch the food rec's as you have quite a few good suggestions. Regarding hotels, checkout quickbook.com where you can see a map of all hotels they promote and find decent rates with fewer restrictions than most discount hotel sites and sometimes a minimal discount for stays of 3 nights or more... Quickbook you can even cancel up to 24 hours before with no penalty and don't have to pay until check in while some hotels that give good rates require a non-refundable one night deposit.
My suggestion is Circa 39 Hotel. In Mid Miami Beach and as stated already you need a car in Miami and Circa gives you a decent room, decent rate (upgrade sometimes if available) and a complimentary continental breakfast.
Asia de Cuba vs. Mr. Chow
Agree with Frod. Have been to Asia, but haven't been to Mr. Chow. Too much bad word of mouth on Mr. Chow and they have only been open 3-4 months and have found Asia to be decent. Not a foodie experience, but great setting and atmosphere, went on a weekday as weekend can be a scene, but you might be looking for that.
Anything new or coming to Dade late '09?
I enjoyed King Kone as well... Apparently though they are the original import from Brazil as there is an imitator similar to what happend with Le Sandwicherie where someone is spinning off an original concept.

dilemma.
Just heard that Animal was picked as the best new chefs by FOOD & WINE for 2009. I was able to get a rez for this coming Saturday. Which created a dilemma. Should we drop either AOC or Lucques to re-book Church & State? Or maintain the drop of Church & State and keep AOC and Lucques?? We are only in town 4 nights.
Since we are not bi-coastal much, the chances of us getting to revisit are slim and we want to get the best experiences possible.
Feedback is appreciated.
By the way:
Breakfast and lunches I have a bunch selected based on where we are roaming in the city so feedback not needed there. But dinners secured are:
Lucques
AOC
Animal
Bazaar

Dine-Around in South Miami
Cafe Pastis is great Their website says it best:
Café Pastis is a funky little bistro in the middle of South Miami that calls to mind the charming neighborhood eateries of Paris. Born in Marseille, trained in Paris, chef Philippe Jacquet has partnered with Miami native Scott L. Price to bring you the most authentic country French dining experience this side of the Atlantic.
always packed.
Second choice would be Alta Cocina, have to support my people.
East Los Angeles
is this a nightly/weekly thing or an annual thing. In LA in June for 5 days and street food scene is of particular interest to me to experience "local cuisine"
Cafes & Bakeries in Miami
not sure, per our Argentinean guests, apparently it is a chain from BA so such as Mc D's or a BK, doesn't matter the quality as much as the prices as its fit into the "fast food nation" perhaps? Seems the draw might be catching the games on TV. Not Moises, though I do enjoy them. Yes, Frod, just googled Manolo's and Manolo's it is. Love Martarello for lunch, not had any of their baked goods (what do they have other than prepared items?) other than the zucchini bread that is great. Need to revisit.

Cafes & Bakeries in Miami
still there, but there is another one that is popular with ex-pats across the street from Sazon? by the BandShell on Collins Ave? Apparently all the ex-pats watch there futbol there. Someone fill in the lapses in memory for me?
Downtown Miami May Update
We did a taste test between Roasters & Toasters and Publix bagels just this morning. Publix beat R&T in the price war .69 cents versus 1.25 at R&T, however R&T ever so slightly edged out Publix for taste apparently and was lighter than Publix.
What did we learn, go to Publix for bagels and get the Kirkland Lox from Costco.. R&T is robbery and with the rash of robberies in our area, I would rather not pay to get robbed, sadly I think authentic deli's in Miami Beach are extinct and don't you dare mention Jerry's.
New or coming soon '09 edition (Miami)
Piola 14 years ago was my favorite place to hang when they were on Washington Ave. Went for a pizza recently before a movie and was sadly disappointed. Rustica has been my go to pizza joint since.
Do all farmers markets in Florida stink?
as I failed to realize. Farmer's Market scene has come to an end this season. I was hoping to stop by the Coral Gables edition, CLOSED. Googled Pinecrest, ended in March so I headed to Whole Foods in South Miami and was gouged from the slim pickings of their "bridge and tunnel" selection. Today, I dared venture to the Swap Shop and its swine flu inducing appearance of row after row of the SAME vegetables. I was in Cleveland, OH last weekend and came upon the Westside Market in proximity to downtown Cleveland. That is the new level by which I judge an outdoor market. We can only aspire to what I witnessed last weekend.
Jerry's Yummy, quality & service going downhill?
Ice Box serves breakfast/brunch on weekends and holidays.
Jerry's Yummy, quality & service going downhill?
as locals, we tried it a couple of times and gave up. The service was abismal and the food didn't make the situation any better. Perhaps it didn't help going as locals that do sleep at night going early for breakfast as the servers were coming off their overnight shift it appeared.
Agree about Front Porch, in addition to Ice Box and Balan for breakfast.
Inespensive gem in or near South Beach
and since Soyka gave up management of it, even the simple roasted chicken is tough to digest now.
Inespensive gem in or near South Beach
I second that and don't dare mention Nexxt Cafe.
Inespensive gem in or near South Beach
it kinda sorta maybe is close to South Beach, to me it is because I have a car, but Buena Vista Bistro is tops when it comes to great food with a little french influence at under $20 for a nice entree and a decent bottle of red for $28 and tasted like it was twice the price.

Diners/coffee shops in Bal Harbour?
for a simple breakfast sandwiches and pastries there is Santa Fe that is "argentinean" in their menu with miga sandwiches and other fare, however it is not made on the premise and is delivered every morning from local bakeries. They did expand their seating area so I can only assume they expanded their selections and could be offering more. There you can have a coffee with your pastry and grab a newspaper or magazine if you didn't get what you wanted at your hotel room door.
They are upstairs on the second floor. And then you can go spend a fortune shopping!
Key West, the good and bad.
Blue Heaven is tough and it depends the time of year that you go and the fly quotient can vary. I would lose Marquesa as it is a bit overpriced. We enjoy 7Fish, but be prepared as it is very tight and be ready to get aquainted with tables in your vicinity. A great place for a late afternoon tapas and wine is Santiago's Bodega. A bit off the road more traveled, but you feel like you discovered it and no one knows about it. Though it is well known and everyone knows about it!
