Best cafe spots in NYC to study, drink good coffee, eat, and HANG OUT
Check out Grounded at 28 Jane Street. Really comfortable with good coffee/tea and snacks. The Murray's bagel grilled cheese is a favorite!

Thanksgiving at Perilla
I also dined at Perilla for Thanksgiving and have to say it was somewhat disappointing but not a total bust. I called in advance because my dining partner is a vegetarian and I wanted to make sure there were options. I was told there would be at least one pasta/risotto and another vegetarian dish. Upon arrival we were told there was only a vegetable plate! Having dined there a few times in the past I figured they would put out all the stops so we went with it.
Apps: I had the sea urchin and crab - I have to agree with the comments above; it was a bit of a mess. The carrot soup on the other hand was divine.
Entrees: The turkey was quite good; moist with well seasoned gravy but the stuffing was eh? i didn't eat the vegetable plate..it looked very pretty but not what you would expect from Perilla for a Thanksgiving entree. I was told it tasted ok but nothing special.. a big disappointment.
Sides: We were each offered a side; nothing was said about sharing. We both had the brussel sprouts which were fantastic.
Dessert was gingerbread pudding; very good and something chocolate; can't recall but very rich and hard to finish.
Service was pleasant, attentive but not intrusive. So overall, if not for the vegetarian entree, I would give this meal higher remarks. The person answering the phones should not have misinformed us. I live in the neighborhood and will be back; maybe even share my experience in person if the opportunity presents itself.

Bagels in the West Village
Go to Grounded on Jane [down the block from the Corner Bistro]. They have H&H bagels.
Maybe Odd Request...
Hey all -
do you know anyone who sells gourmet croutons? yes, croutons. My boss who I like loves them and I'd like to find some great ones to add to a holiday basket. Yes last minute idea so hope I can find them in NYC but if necessary will do next day delivery.
thanks!

Resto
111 E 29th St Frnt 1, New York, NY 10016
Another WV restaurant gone - Da Andrea.. bummer..any other people agree?
Chalk it up to the insane rents driven by IMO the new designer Bleeker St row; another really nice neighborhood restaurant gets shoved out. Luckily they are moving to somewhere on 13th st so they are not oob but still.
I've watched Hudson Corner - nothing extraordinary but solid food go south [still nothing open in that space after well over a year].
My go-to chinese Mama Budha closed - great soups & fresh veggies with the nicest staff you'd ever meet.
Mi Cocina - that was a hard one to see go - great 'ritas, empanadas & just a fun place with another excellent caring staff.
I'm sure I'm missing others that have closed but what can I say. Writing this b/c I think neighborhoods need great affordable places; a number of mine are gone and I just needed to vent :)
Sure I'll check out new places like Braeburn & give them a shot [and have enjoyed meals at a number of new places too much to mention now] but it kills me that so many others that have been around for years are forced out. Every 'hood needs affordable good food and I think mine is dying..... just my .02
NY steakhouse...worth it?
Not that you need another but here goes ... I agree with Sated; if you don't mind crossing the bridge, Peter Luger's is the way to go; worth the short trek and the only place I have ever walked out with a doggie bag [you just can't leave any of that delish steak & it makes for a great steak/egg scramble the next day!].
In the city, Strip House.. opposite end of the spectrum in terms of ambiance and equally great but different steak experience. . I've also had some very nice lunches at Wolfgang's in Tribeca; solid good food. Enjoy!
Acme Bar & Grill
Agree with most of the above; nothing special so as long as you don't expect greatness; you'll be ok. Personally I'd walk a few blocks & go to Sala and get some tapas; bowery/great jones. Blue Man is fun so you'll have a good time either way. Enjoy!
New ideas for 3 dinners and 3 lunches in NY
RGR and Leah said a number of my suggestions. I'd also consider Perilla for dinner; if you choose right you can be within budget; although I'll admit it's stretching it.. but so good. I'm also a new fan of Resto for lunch. I really like the space & the service is spot on. I love mussels and they have a wide selection along w/ really good frites. Enjoy NYC!
great perilla experience
So I've waited a while to go there because i was a bit apprehensive about the whole harold top chef hype . I can say for sure, I was so wrong. I had an amazing dining experience - meal from start to check.
Walked in without a res and was greated very nicely. I said i might want a table if that was possible. We had drinks at the bar and then said we'd like a table; the 'walk in' table was available so we took it. Yes, it's the one near the kitchen but the space is so open that despite the size I didn't feal cramped or uncomfortable. The meal was amazing. The duck meatballs lived up to the hype.. slighty spicy tasty very yummy.. My friend had the branzino which was on top of an unxpected spicy lamb was sublime. I had the special of the nite which was an amazing fish; forgot the name of it, but it was like halibut w/ braised green, mushrooms and black garbanzo beans which were amazing. After arguing over donuts & other desserts we topped it off with what i can say was the best dessert I've had in the past say, 5 years... chocolate peacan pie w/ sorbet. omg! stop now.
Top it off with a really skilled and personable waiter who answered all our questions and was so nice without being too in our face.. Oh can't forget that I loved our wine & said at some point that I always forget a good wine .. when we left we got an envelope with the wine label... in a very pretty envelope. Does it get any better than that?
Good service, great space, amazing food., class service.. .. i'm back soon.. ..
Ezekiel Bread
Thanks Everyone. Some people swear by it and others agree with Xiao; have to see for myself as I love bread but really trying to go the healthy route [well at least most of the time]. Thanks again.
Need Black & White Cookies
Thank you all. you've made this so much easier for me. Living downtown, I will try Donut Pub first, Thanks all.....]]
Need Black & White Cookies
Hi - I need to buy a bunch of black & white cookies for gift bags. Are they all the same or is there a 'go-to' place for the best? Thanks.
Biz dinner/first mtg.. really need help!
i know this doesn't help but i really have no idea about budget; just not over the top. guessing i would say $40-50/pp ?
Biz dinner/first mtg.. really need help!
Hi Hounder's,
Here's the deal. He's staying in midtown east but willing to travel, if so, preferably downtown.
When I threw out some options he said: I prefer fresh, good proteins (free range, sustainably grown, etc), whole grains, etc. Sushi definitely falls in that category. A French bistro also sounds excellent. I also love good Southeast Asian cuisine - Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian. Must be moderately priced wihich is why I think sushi is out. I''m stumped. Please help.. thx.
Pierogi
I have to agree with Ukranian National Hiome. The decor and atmosphere will definitely be 'an experience' if you haven't been; it's pretty much stuck in time. As someone else said, it's the closest to what Babci used to make. Enjloy!
Tapas downtown
Another you could try is Sala on 19th Street. I've always found the food, atmosphere and service to be very good.
Maille mustards
Dagostino's has them. Not sure about your specific variety but I bought two jars the other day... on sale; 2 for $5.00
Wedding rehearsal dinner debacle - please offer advice
Hi All -
You've always been a great go-to for all things food related; and for that I thank you again.
This time, it's not so easy. I've searched online and have a few ideas but still need some suggestions. Here's the deal:
One of my best friends are getting married in early October. They are a very casual couple but enjoy good things; read - wedding food is top notch but casual southern comfort.
I'm trying to help them find a place for the rehearsal dinner but details are still not solid: so far 30-40 people; budget around $50-60/pp. prefer downtown;[ie; below 23rd st but open] private room not necessary but probably makes sense. Cuisine open.
Ideas? Any and all are very appreciated. Thanks!
Help my dad love the West Village as much as I do
As someone who lives and eats in the WV, I would agree with those that suggest da Andrea and Malatesta. You mentioned that you want your dad to 'love the neighborhood' as much as you and your b/f do. These two places in my opinion are very WV. Good solid food, iniviting and comfortable setting and overall good experience. I'm not talking Michelin star but places you will go back to again & again.
Tapas or great apps near 42nd/8th
Hi All,
Any ideas? I'm never in this neighborhood and not looking for a full dinner. Love spanish but open to a good place with great appetizers. Thanks!
Take out order wrong - to call or not? [moved from Manhattan board]
Interesting that my post was moved b/c it's all about Manhattan food. Maybe I'm off on protocol here.. if I named restaurants would it move back?
Taim.. ordered hummus & whole wheat pita.. got baba & white pita...
either way.. still like you guys...
Take out order wrong - to call or not? [moved from Manhattan board]
Hi All,
This might not be a regular question but I hope you all are interested.
As we all know, one of the great things about living in NYC is take out & delivery. I've had an unusually bad week with two delivery orders wrong and one take out wrong. What to do?
My thought is that if it's a big order, or completely wrong, I should call and complain but otherwise just suck it up and ignore it. If it's a restaurant that I regularly use I will call or let them know next time I'm there.
I've come to use this forum as my 'go to' for a great diverse foodie board so I hope you can provide some insight on this topic. Might seem like a minor topic but right now I'm really annoyed.... just got home and opened up something I did not order! Thanks!
Israeli Restaurant & Falafel
For falafel I love Taim in the west village [waverly place & 7th avenue]. It's a 'hole in the wall' but excellent food. Enjoy!
help with mushrooms...
I happen to love mushrooms but mainly saute with other veggies and usually w/ garlic. I'd like to find some interesting ways to make them as well as other spices to enhance the flavor. Any ideas? thanks...
stuffed cabbage
Check out the Ulkranian National Home in the EV. I usually eat the pirogies and it's been a while since I had the stuffed cabbage; but I'm sure it's gonna be good. You can also try Veselka down the block.
breakfast, brunch places
Yes they are def open for breakfast. I worked around the corner for a couple of years recently and made it my go-to place for breakfast when they were on 18th and when they moved around the corner to 17th. A decadant waffle when I was feeling like it and a great omelet and side salad when I wanted to be healthy .. lol!
