Menton, Clio, or Craigie? Tasting menu blow-out for family. Recent expeiences?

Clio a true disappointment.

I would favor Troquet. The food is simply awesome, and the wines to die for. Chris is a great guy.

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

Sorry to have come in late on this, but have to respond. I was a medical resident at UCLA, and on a tight budget hit the Apple Pan at least once a week. In the mid 80's, both Hector and Gordon served me the best hamburgers I have ever had, and when I visit L.A. continue to do so. I studied for my board exams on those uncomfortable stools, and when I passed them, H and G's congratulations were heartfelt and warm. This is not a gourmet hamburger, but the coffee is great, the cream is real, as are the personalities in a city where kindness is sorely lacking

Portsmouth, NH Oct 27-30 Thurs-Sun

I have always found the buffet at the Wentworth to be magnificent, but I usually stick with plates of the freshly opened oysters, the gravlax, breads, and the waffles. Usually have about three dozen oysters, and the cost at that point is a steal.

Souffle Pancakes

Are there any restaurants in the New York City metro area that serve souffle pancakes.

Sushi Island? Meh.....

Disagree about Oishii. They have been of average size and usually superb.

Victoria Diner -- wow, just wow!

Agree completely. The Victoria got me through medical school, which is high praise considering the experience that I had at BU Med sucked.

When Pigs Fly Pizzeria In Kittery-- any thoughts?

Just went twice in the last week. In a word- stupendous! Best dishes- tuna crudo, mussels, risotto, any pizza. Only one issue-one pizza was slightly underdone. Incredible beer selection.

Warren's Lobster House, Kittery Maine

Heberts is wonderful. Bewley was being extremely generous in his review. It is like a nursing home on visitors day, with worse quality food.

The chef is Ben Hasty. Equipment purchased is the best available. Not gone yet, but expect it to be stellar.

Best Burger

I am visiting San Francisco next week. Where is the best burger?

Shwarma- Best Of, and Jerusalem, Garlic 'n Lemons, Falafel King, etc., plus Lamb Kabobs

In my clumsy way, wanted to indicate that great writing takes on many forms. Must be an "age and background thing" Sorry for the lack of relevance.

Critique my quick trip to downeast Maine, and I need help on the way, especially late night in Manchester!

From a former SF resident (MD at UCSF), welcome to my world of NH and Maine. I would stick with what we do well here. Personally, that only includes seafood. Anything ethnic of any sort will disappoint you. I would pick Red Arrow as it does not have a corporate feel.

Go straight down to the ocean in southern Maine, and hit Bob's clam shack or Robert's, both in Kittery. In Portsmouth, you can try the Beach Plum for an excellent lobster roll. For boiled lobster, I would hit Petey's in Rye, just across from the waves.

Republic is just like an average corner restaurant in SF. No good seafood places either.

Wanna exchange homes for a few months????

To each his own. It is noted that Max Perkins edited both Hemingway's and Thomas Wolfe's novels.

Cafe Mediterraneo, Portsmouth, NH

This is one of the few restaurants I have ever walked away from. The chicken parm that I had was so flavorless, gummy, and loaded with sauce that makes Ragu a winner, that I simply asked for the check, paid, and left. My DC's dinner was scarcely better.

Pesce Blue was my favorite restaurant as well, divine, restrained and delightful. Now it is closed.

St. Thomas USVI Recap (long)

Boy, I have never had a bad or even average pizza at Island-Time, and it has become our hangout for great food. Car. Saloon after ten has great pizza as well, and no longer is it a smoker's heaven.

The best food on the island by far? At the Ritz sushi bar. Impeccibly fresh fish served by Emily. Truly rare stuff straight from Japan, including the best O-Toro I have ever had. Drinks are very overpriced, but the sushi and cooked food is to die for.

Tony Bourdain visits the Ozarks

Not to be elitist, but this was the most boring, mundane show he has done since the one on the Azores. I found nothing charming about the arm wrestling contest, and he did nothing to help us understand the culture of this neglected area. Not that I would want a sociological masterpiece, but I kept wondering why the children all don't leave and live elsewhere.Perhaps I missed the innate charm of the place, or he failed to express it among the drinking binges.

Roundabout Diner- meh

I know what you mean. I am always amazed about how little effort goes into making a meal a little better than mediocre. This place will either live or die by its food. It is in the middle of a row of cheap motels in a part of Portsmouth that has as much charm as the city dump. Location can be great though. Huge number of cars going by.

Roundabout Diner- meh

Waiting for someone to arrive at Portsmouth, and decided to stop in for the first time. Had the "Blue Plate Special of good mashed potatoes, gluey gravy, very dry white meat turkey, and stuffing far worse than Stove Top.

Coffe was burnt and undrinkable.

Had the Phantom Gourmet "Best" banana cream pie. Must be advertising with the Andelman morons. Certainly not bad, but weird. Both meringue and canned whipped cream. Very small portion.

Maybe will give it another chance for breakfast, or caught it on an off day.

The Oak Room will be taken over by the Lolita folks.

I have been to the Oak Room on multiple occasions, and found it not at all "stuffy". There is a certain formality, but I think it comes from the decor and not the staff, who are delightful. I am quite disappointed. I think they have, or had, the best chateaubriand in Boston.

Simply awful. Reminds me of the dessert buffets that are on mega cruise ships. Nice to look at, but no flavor, or passion. Davio's, and even Legal Seafoods are much better choices.

Any experience with these Portsmouth, NH area caterers?

Have used many caterers, but White Apron is simply the best. I have not used Pesce Blue, and their restaurant food is superb. White Apron has done two weddings and my 50th birthday party, with fois gras souffle, wondrous lamb, gnocchi that was perfection, oysters, sushi, and the best desserts ever, everything made from scratch.

I tend to be demanding of caterers, and Jay has always been extremely responsive.

NH - Worthy food publications?

I have rarely read a negative review in any of the papers. Given that most reviews are based on one meal, I think that this is reasonable. It would be worse to trash a restaurant than to say it is "good eating".

Troquet

Not only is the wine list superb, but Chris"(owner) knows it cold. Since he is known to trade for great wines, there is something here that appears on few if any high end restaurants in Boston- aged high end wines that will not break the bank.

I have alsways found the food terrific, and my wife has already picked it for her 40th birthday, as did I many years ago. I find it to far elipse in both food and wine the likes of Clio, L'Espalier and even Menton. The portions are not dear, and the atmosphere is low key.

Island Creek Oyster Bar--best place in the whole world!

Boy, what a great place! My DC and I put away three dozen oysters, including the Belons, that were delicious but rather tame. Magnificent fried clams, and the service was truly wonderful. Zac knew every part of the menu, and spot on with his advice. Bravo!
