Can It Be?! Is Our Beautiful City Finally Getting a Terrific French Bakery?

There is another new French bakery in town.
Seigle D'or in Brighton which has just been open a few months.

July 2014 Openings and Closings

Went by there again today. The name is Seigle D'or. Their hours sign says 7-7 Mon-Sat and 9-6 Sun. The owner said he has been open since March! I never noticed them but perhaps the new giant FRENCH BAKERY sign in the window helped me to notice it. They are on Facebook and Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/seigle-d-or-b... but not mentioned until now on CHOW.
I learned on Yelp that the owner used to bake in Paris and then at Athans in Brighton Center until he opened his own shop.

The name is not at all prominent so I did not notice it - just was driving by and saw the "French Bakery and Cafe" part of the sign so had to check it out. Why don't you go check it out, too? After visiting and seeing the home-made signage, something tells me they may not yet have a web site or Facebook. A one man operation in a poor location for parking and foot traffic so, hopefully, he will survive by word of mouth touting the quality of his goods.

There is a new French bakery in Brighton. It is in that little row of stores near the intersection of Comm. Ave and Washington Street, next to the new(ish) Double Apple head shop. I just stopped by to check it out - I got a croissant which was terrific. There is no coffee beyond the ordinary coffee pot. Lots of variety there. Good luck to them!

Lulu's Allston, anyone been yet?

Add to that: N. Beacon St after Everett St down to the Volvo - no meters.

Your recollection about parking is spot on. Haven't tried the place yet but drive by it every day. They sure took a very long time opening!

Splurge Anniversary Weekend

I just heard about this one night package in Ogunquit. The place is stunning:

http://www.dunesonthewaterfront.com/S...

I would couple it with this restaurant:

http://www.joshuas.biz/menu.html

but there are lots of good dinner and brunch options in the area.

Brazilian food--catered in house for small group Cambridge

Once I had a friend visitor from Paris, France and what she wanted was IHOP = food Americans eat.

I am NOT recommending IHOP but are you sure you want to serve Brazilian to your guest?

Twin Donuts renovation

I think the donuts are better than Dunkin and sometimes that is good enough.

I also think that Harold Brown's people probably want to re-lease that building ...

I also think you should hat tip Universal Hub.

Canadian foods sold anywhere?

I grew up in Canada. There are some foods, particularly candies and cookies, which I miss. When I get to Canada, I can pick up some of these favourites (Canadian spelling for the occasion).

There are a few things which have made it across the border into our stores, such as Dare Chocolate Fudge cookies.

There are a few candies which have close cousins (from Ireland) which are sold around here in stores which sell Irish foods, such as the Aero bars (although they are not exactly the same as the Canadian version).

So ... it never occurred to me until just now to ask you Chowhound experts: does anyone know anywhere around here where they sell foods from Canada?

With Hilltop almost gone, what is now the most Iconic Boston Area Restaurant?

Just went last Saturday to Ken's. It is old school, still. I had my onion roll, iceberg&tomato salad, and a very nice Queen cut prime rib. To top it off, an old school dessert = Baked Alaska. I enjoy taking the elders to this place, I have to say. It's replaced Pier 4 (which replaced Jimmy's Harborside) for me on the old school night out with the elders circuit.

Broasted Chicken Anywhere?

If you put your address into Google, then go to Google Maps, then type Broasted Chicken in the search field, you will find places. Like this place. Looks good. Thanks for the idea. I might have to go there!

Lobster Rolls: 2013 Edition

The Maine Diner in Wells, ME has a lobster roll which is crave-worthy-of-a-long-drive. It is described on their menu as "Fresh lobster meat is heated and served in a grilled roll with a side of drawn butter." Whoa, it's good.

They also have another version of the lobster roll on their menu which I assume is cold meat with mayo but I've never tried it ...

Does anyone know what's happening with Cafe Brazil in Allston?

I second that thought. So sad. Been going there since they opened and was with them as they added each room. :-(

Does anyone know what's happening with Cafe Brazil in Allston?

Cafe Brazil has looked closed for the last few weeks I have driven by it. I just figured the owner must be on a long Brazilian vacation. But now I just tried to call them and the numbers are not in service. Say it isn't so!!! I love this place ...

I recall Cottage Donuts fondly, too.

There is a place in Wells, ME called Congdon's Donuts which has comparable Chocolate Jimmy donuts.

Ice Cream Soda

I've been there twice since the turmoil. I had never been there before the Belmont Brigham's had closed so I can't say whether they slipped but we thought the grilled cheeses, ice cream soda, and frappe we had were all good.

Ice Cream Soda

Yes, that is the place. Vintage, for sure. Nice people who run that place and know what they are doing! Arlington Heights is also very very vintage decor :-) Shabbier than Quincy but I still appreciate it very much.
There are only 4 restaurants left, that I know of. The 2 others are:

(3) 37 Main Street, Hingham, MA
(4) 350 Winthrop Avenue, North Andover, MA [Never been to this one. Never up in that 'hood.]

Ice Cream Soda

My 86 year old Mom loves a mocha (one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of coffee on top) ice cream soda. I take her to Saturday 4pm Mass and then we get a bite to eat after.

We've had good luck at ... wait for it ... Brigham's (yes, still!). Made correctly by experienced Brigham's staff, although not a traditional glass any more. The Brigham's we've gotten them at recently are at

(1) 13 Beale Street (Wollaston/Quincy)
and
(2) 1328 Mass. Ave (Arlington Heights).

NoMu or FoMu, it's still fantastic!!

I live so nearby but was worried to try it for the first month of its existence. Finally did. I had the Salted Caramel and my friend had the Thai Peanut. Both have the hint of coconut but texture is exactly like ice cream. Perfectly sweetened and spiced. About $4 a cone (including small tip) but I was OK to pay it for the high quality.

I strong recommend FoMu!

All this talk of the HoJo clam roll got me thinking....

Summer Shack in Back Bay.
But, if that's too far, the Salty Dog at Fanueil Hall can be OK and is near you.
