z burger in tenleytown?

Yeah I don't think it's a chain just because I can't find anything about it on the internet. I went there today (it was their opening day) and I was actually impressed. Their burgers were cali-style, much like 5 Guys. I thought they were just as good as 5 Guys, if not better, and everything was cheaper. The fries could have been crispier but they had a nice flavor and were made fresh there, as were the burgers. My milkshake could have been thicker I thought but it was good, and they have about a million milkshake choices! Overall, really fun experience.

Brunch in Murray Hill/Gramercy Park [Moved from What's My Craving board]

the ess-a-bagel on 21st is excellent. the bagels are warm from the oven and they have an amazing array of spreads. it's not fancy though, and if you don't like bagels, then you might be out of luck...

Falafel

byblos has EXCELLENT falafel. i'm comparing this to falafel i've had in israel and to the homemade falafel my israeli uncle makes. the falafel at byblos (on 39th between 2nd and 3rd avenues) is perfectly crispy on the outside and so moist and flavorful on the inside. the balls are very big and the tehina is a perfect simple component to the falafel. believe me, u don't want too many flavors accompanying the falafel. you just want to take the falafel. amazing.

and if you go to byblos, i would also recommend the chicken kabob. grilled perfectly so it's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Amsterdam falafel... so so

i also disagree with some of the complaints on Amsterdam. I think the atmosphere is awesome and really caters to their late-night crowd. The falafel balls are not greasy and are tasty to me. I do agree that they should invest in a better pita company, or make their own, but the toppings to me are important, because honostly, what is a falafel without tahina, hummus, cabbage, babbaganouj (sp?) etc. And the toppings they provide are tasty and various. It's a fun experience over-all and I do recommend it.

Best chain overall?

What's wrong with Baja? Maybe yours is bad, but the one around here is wildly popular. Their food is really good; the meat fresh and tasty, and they always get my order right :)

Is the Jamba Juice hype true?

haha thanks. but it is a disappointment. really, from what some of my friends say about it, you'd think they use manna from heaven.

I'm going into the city to visit me a friend. He's taking me to Becco, and I need some recommendations for what to order.

mascarpone?

I went to this cheese store where they paired it with pesto, which can be used in turn for spreads, etc. It was so good.

Is the Jamba Juice hype true?

Is Jamba Juice all it's cracked up to be? Every time I'm in DC, which is the closest place to me that has it, the one I find it always closed! Weird hours...so I've never gotten to taste it. Is the hype about it true, or will I finally be let down when I get to taste it eventually.

Best chain overall?

I love Chipotle! I find their ingredients to always be fresh, and I love the "subway-esque" set-up, so you can see exactly what is going on your burrito.

I also think their atmosphere is very amusing (Small mexican statues of Aztecian gods and the workers wearing shirts that say Master of the Grill, I made the Guacomole this morning, etc)

Is Trader Joe's going downhill?

I have only been shopping at TJ's for a couple of years so I really don't know if it's gone down or not, but I really enjoy it. It's a special treat for me since it's about 45 minutes away, so I usually don't get everyday grocery items such as veggies and dairy.

I get lots of frozen and prepared meals, which is maybe why I've never had a problem with food quality or expiration dates.

PS their chocolate chip dunkers are AMAZING. I don't even like chocolate chip cookies, and I'm addicted to these. GET THEM

best guacamole

I agree with you about using both lime and lemon juices, but be sure not to overpower the hearty avocado flavors with these acidic juices.

Also, I like my guac to be just green with all of the flavors not visible, so instead of using chopped tomatoes, use chili sauce which gives the tomato flavors as well as the spices used.

Lots of salt, lots of pepper, and LOTS of mexican all-spice. That's all you need for a guac that you're friends will rave about. Enjoy!

Deleting a post? (my own)

Can you please delete a post that I have created? I created two falafel posts, one in the Manhatten board and one in the Cravings board, just to get the maximum amount of responses. I'm getting all of the responses under the Manhatten board, so could you please delete the falafel post in the Cravings board? I would appreciate it.

Fruit with Meat; a Do or a Don't

I do not particularly like the chicken fruit combination. I think it's because I just associate both with different situations.

I want to eat fruit to be refreshed, and as a light snack, and I want to eat meat as a substantial meal with hearty flavors.

I do like chicken with lemon, like in chicken piccata, and chicken with lime, like in fajitas, but that's about it.

However, my favorite chinese dish is honey sesame chicken, which is really sweet, but I doubt that it has any actual fruit in it :)

Is there Potato Nik ANYWHERE in Manhatten?

Rose, I definitely agree with you, as my mom sits next to me nodding her head. I've had kugel and knish plenty of times, and it's definitely a completely different food. I actually have had it once, and it was soo good. My grandparents found it somewhere, but they can't remember where they got it from!!! Thanks for your response though.

I definitely agree about the sour cream. Below is a link to a short article about the debate at MIT for 2005. (it's spread to other schools over the years!) Enjoy.

There actually is an annual debate every year which takes place at the University of Chicago, for the past 50 years and counting. The debate covers which food has a more important hitsory behind it as well as taste. It's really interesting.

The age-old debate. In my opinion, LATKES all the way! It really comes down to whether you're a dessert person or a meal person.

My mom raves to me about how when she was little, she would buy Potato Nik from vendors in Manhatten. Now we can't find it anywhere!
