What Foods Do You Hate/Dislike that Most Hounds Probably Love?

Yeah, I don't mind the ground stuff too, but I got the pods in a fruit salad once. It was pretty bad because it was yogourt, cardamom pods and fruit. And I wasn't expecting it because I was eating in the dark...yuck. So I would feel the same way about seeing it my curry, I'm sure.

Type of mint leaves used for Thai Summer Rolls

Spearmint is great. So is Thai basil if you want to add it. If you have coriander, it's a classic to add. Laotian summer roll (make your own platters) will usually have these herbs at our house: spearmint, coriander, swordgrass (because I love swordgrass but it's not exactly traditional), sometimes shiso (because my mom grows it), vietnamese mint especially if there is pork, chicken or fish in the roll is nice...

What Foods Do You Hate/Dislike that Most Hounds Probably Love?

With you on the cardamom especially if I'm expected to just eat them..with a smile on my face. Adds a new level of torture. (It's okay in tea though because it's the essence not the thing I'm eating.)

My other thing is okra. I'm not sure okra and I will ever be friends.

Its soooo hot out...

Ice cream, sandwiches, cooking less, but every few days I feel the urge so I make quick stuff on a griddle like bulgogi and vegetables on rice. Rice cookers are great.

Do you go crazy for an item then stop liking it?

I'm like this for drinks. Also might be TMI but I have a monthly chocolate craving in which I must have chocolate or I possibly get violent but I have no interest whatsoever in it at other times so I know when it's coming.

Nasty Little Treats

Steak fat tastes good with a bit of char on it and it's melting with fat. :P

Proper way to eat french fries ... etiquette question

yes...

What are these eggs?

OH! Okay. So maybe a blender is the best bet then.

What are these eggs?

If it's like low end diner/school cafeteria stuff, then it's very likely liquid eggs, they beat them and sell them in a carton. An example is Egg Creations which has only egg whites: http://www.burnbraefarms.com/consumer/our_products/egg_creations_can.htm#intro

If you click through that site, you will also find other egg products such as the "break free" eggs which are more like regular eggs only they are pre-whipped and have a bit of fat removed.

As someone mentioned before, these products will be near the eggs in the supermarket, but you may not have noticed them before since eggs are near milk and juice and all of those cartons sometimes blend into a faceless mass of cartons. Some of these liquid eggs will come in different flavours.

What is your "perfect breakfast"? [moved from Home Cooking]

I rarely eat breakfast, so if I have it, it's got to be really nice and feel indulgent.

3-4 slices of bacon and the bacon may sometimes be maple bacon, a thick cut preferred.
2 eggs over easy
1 piece of whole wheat or multigrain toast and 1 piece of white, both NOT buttered, definitely a light-medium toast, cut into triangles. If I have to choose one or the other, it's multigrain.
Some sort of fruit such as sliced apple or a fruit salad. No to the fruit salad if it has honey mixed in it or other stuff. Fruit only in the fruit salad.
Maybe hash browns, but not necessary. If hash browns or potato of some sort is offered, I will eat only 1 piece of toast.
If the coffee is good, coffee with a sugar and a little milk. If the coffee is not going to be good, tea, plain.

What to do with pickling cucumbers?

Are pickling cucumbers just the ones that have big seeds? As in non-English cucumbers that are big and bumpy? If they are and you don't like the seeds, you can just scoop out the middle part and do what you usually do. I think my dad prefers this type of cucumber for snacking, he likes the extra texture of the seeds.

Pastry tips (goats cheese filling)

It looks like that to me too and it looks to be folded the way a crepe would be.

Canadians--tell me your favourite recipe from Mom or Grandma

It's could be the Russian connection being near China. There are lots of Russian, German Mennonites I notice. More so German, but some of the cultural things are shared.

first time cooking for 30 people during vacation

For me, I would ask because I would feel bad if someone couldn't eat and sometimes people forget about food if it's not important to them. I wouldn't change the meal entirely, I'd just leave things out and let people put in the optional ingredients on their own. For 30 people, I like buffets anyway, so that's why. A sit down meal is a different matter entirely, and you're right, it would be impossible in that case. It's easier than worrying. And it really also depends on the people you're hanging out with. The people I hang out with won't say that something is a "dietary need" unless it's for religious or allergic reasons. I don't hang around the crowd that has an undiagnosed allergy because they feel it's fashionable or low-fat.

Help From Bread Bakers!!

I think that since you like that bread, just try it and see what happens! If the sandwich bread tends to be floppy as opposed to a more firm free form loaf would be, have a bit more care when transferring the breadstick to the baking sheet, or you might end up with uneven looking sticks with some pieces too thin in the middle and too fat at the ends.

Hi cfrn, how well do you know everyone? If no, ask ahead of time if anyone has allergies or dietary needs and then you would work from that. I like the idea of taco bar, or of doing a bbq (maybe ask everyone to chip in for this), and of maybe doing a salad bar.

Gluten-free bread rx. with chew (not sourdough)

Hi Dean,

Try these:

This thread also seems to be a good resource: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/753975

what to do w a too sweet cake

If you cut the cake in half sideways, you can fill it with a very tart jam and top with unsweetened whipped cream. Or you can cut it into small pieces and if you make a dark chocolate fondue, the dark chocolate will cut the sweetness.

Calling all bakers!!

I know that this isn't something to be baked, but I love cannoli. Other things that don't have to be baked are tiramisu or a berry salad with a tiny dash of alcohol in it. If not because it is something that has to be baked then I really like the ricotta cheesecake idea or a custard pie.

Is there such a thing as too much garlic?

I LOVE garlic, but my husband doesn't. He will almost always prefer onions as a flavour base. Certain things, like the foods I grew up with must have garlic. Some of the foods he grew up with must have garlic too but he still doesn't like it. For him, I make an exception, I just use a little less than I used to unless I'm going to make a dish that I feel must be prepared in the traditional way.

It is too much if it means I won't get any kisses later. :P

Doubles near yonge and dundas

Can you recommend a place that you do like wontonfm? I'm always open to trying other places too.

Feeling "out of place" at a restaurant

I feel uncomfortable and that I don't fit in sometimes. I'm glad you did the right thing by leaving. You're not alone!!

Cream ices and water ices

I think of it as one having dairy (cream ice) and the other one not having dairy (water ice).

Doubles near yonge and dundas

Agreed!

You might want to walk to Kensington and get it from Patty King. It's a bit of a walk, but if you have time, you will pass through Chinatown too. I find Coconut grove bland as well...I gave it a BYOS rating in my personal notes (Bring Your Own Salt).

$100 to spend. Do you.....?

Probably spread it around and not use it all on food too. Eat somewhere with husband or friend, buy a book, get a tiny toy for my kitten (or maybe not, I spent $80 to buy her a little cat house and I have since learned that she loves playing with wads of paper--made out of junk mail best :/ ). Buy an inexpensive dress or a cute t-shirt.

If I had to use it all on food, I would spread it around, definitely.

The nasty bits

That's adorable!

Canadians--tell me your favourite recipe from Mom or Grandma

Used in Chinese and Southeast Asian cooking, it's very strong so sometimes you break up the pretty star because the whole star may be too much and use it in soups, roasts, it's part of the five spice blend and here's what it looks like: http://www.foodsubs.com/SpiceAsian.html

Other noted foods you will find it in is red cooked pork, BBQ pork (through five spice powder), and pho. It is strong and so helps to hide or remove "gamey" meat smells or strong meat smells so that it is why it is often paired with pork.

The least expensive places to buy it are Asian grocery stores, they are sold in little packets in the spice or spice/noodle aisle (if it's set up that way) often for $1 or less. If you buy it in the bulk food store or a gourmet store, the price can often be a lot more.

So...I hope this is what you would want to know and not what you already know! :D

Toddler birthday party - healthy menu ideas

If possible maybe also a white grape punch and of course, water, some parents may want to have the pale coloured or clear drinks for their kids and they may also look for "neater" foods to avoid a big cleanup (of their kids) after the party. Some people in my family look for foods and drinks like that at our big family get together. One of my uncles has four kids all under 10! At the same time, interactive options are also really fun meaning different dips will be fun.

Why do people often not tip for Chinese take-out?

Ditto.
