Little Italy?

and tip is 20%, not 15%?

Michelle

Little Italy?

k, budget is around $50-60 for 2.

The only thing I won't eat is junk, very oily or spicy. I won't eat East Indian, Pakistani or Ethiopian, but almost everything else (I haven't eaten every single ethnic food, but I certainly will try b4 I pass over : ) is ok.

Thanks

Little Italy?

Hi all,

I'm traveling to see my sister & I am thinking I should visit Little Italy while I'm there.

I'm not looking for ONLY Italian, so maybe you can recommend another area that has really good food (different ethnicities) & is not expensive.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Michelle
P.S. Can someone recommend some good dance shows that aren't too expensive. We will be in Manhattan on Saturday night.

Sephardic Food in New York

Hi all,

I'm traveling to see my sister & I'm specifically looking for Sepharadic food which I figured there would be a lot of in New York, but I'm not seeing anything but Moroccan. While I love Moroccan, I'm actually looking for a Kurdish dish which I'm getting the feeling I'm not going to get while I'm there LOL

If there are any Iraqi restaurants that would be close, but I don't know, since I only know the 2 dishes I want come from the Kurdish side of my family.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Michelle

Seeking desert place in Windsor for Birthday desert

I know most of the restaurants in Windsor aren't worth going to, but is there a dessert place around?

It's my son's birthday dinner tonight.

Thanks : )

Non-AYCE Japanese restaurant in Richmond Hill/Markham

Non-AYCE Japanese restaurant in Richmond Hill/Markham

Ok, LOL, what does AYCE stand for?

Mexitaco - not bad

While the owner was very nice, I did not like the food at all. The cactus was ok (got a bitter piece at one point), but shells were hard, gauc was bland, rice was bland, pico wasn't how it normally tastes, I've had much better for a cheaper price.

Also the fact that they don't have regular sized margaritas & you HAVE to order one with 1 1/4 ozs doesn't sit right with me.

The best MX rest. I go to (don't really like their Quessedias (sp?) too much though) is Mariachi's at 2084 Yonge St. 416-481-7111

If their other location is still open, I didn't like the food as much.

Bandido's at 371 King St. W. - 416-597-8383 isn't bad. It has the best selection of margaritas I've ever seen (made with real fruit & normally I ONLY order lime margaritas) & the FIRST time I ever tried limes that weren't sour, or endive that wasn't bitter bitter, BUT the owner's wife is a *^%$*. The last time I called while I was asking her something, she gave me attitude. Then she hung up on me, so I haven't been back since.

Also, a few times we went over there only to find them closed during regular biz hours, so clearly they have no respect for customers & just do whatever suits them, although when you are there in front of them, they treat you like a celeb (usually).

Mariachi's is the first MX rest. ever where I tasted cactus which I'll never forget, & I always get it when I go there.

Be careful though, when you ask for stuff to go, sometimes they miss things, & once they charged us for 4 margaritas instead of 2. Also they can get very busy, so you have to reserve, & they sometimes close b/c of parties.

Best Risotto in TO??

I also don't like Risotto. I don't understand the thrill, although maybe it's just what I've tried.

The ones I had were bland & yes, the rice was hard which I don't like.

Now Chef's from Hell's Kitchen, I'd try his just to see if he can win me over since he seems very picky about that dish (not that he isn't picky about everything) : )

Michelle

Best sweet potato fries in TO, particularly uptown...

I 2nd that, but haven't been there in a while. The food was going slightly down hill the last couple of times I was there, but the fries with the miso gravy. Mmmm : )

Michelle
P.S. The one at Bathurst/Boor

Summerlicious 2007

I went to Bistro Tournesol (406 Dupont St.) on the first night & was not impressed at all.

While the ambiance was nice at first, the meal was on the bland side (not to mention we had to wait a while for the entree, & they didn't even offer us any bread - not that I wanted it, but it's my choice whether I do or not) & for what I paid (I ordered one dish ala carte), IMO, it wasn't worth it.

In fact I'm rethinking the WHOLE Fixed menu deal b/c of my experience & usually I jump at the chance to have a fixed meal.

Why should I spend $50-70+ (it's never just that amount) when I can't really chose from much, I end up ordering another appetizer usually, & I could spend the same amount & get more selection & maybe even spend less.

Maybe it was just that restaurant, I don't know, plus 90% of them are only downtown. What? The rest of TO doesn't participate?

Sorry, I'm hungry right now (don't know where to go & it's late), plus the restaurant I checked out the week prior to the Bistro (not part of Summerlicious) was also a disappointment, so I'm not too happy a camper right now spending money & feeling like everything is a waste : )

Thanks for listening

How to cut spicy soup

Thanks guys, why am I not being notified of responses : (

I put yogurt in already. I don't really use sour cream, yogurt is better.

As I already stated, I put in grand mariner maple syrup & now it's too sweet LOL

I guess I'll try the carrots maybe. There's already too many potatoes in there.

I used purple sweet potatoes, if you guys have ever heard of that b4 : )

Thanks & have a great wknd.!

How to cut spicy soup

Hi there,

I just made a soup that killed me.

I don't know if it was the pepper, or the cumin seeds in addition to the pepper that made this soup spicy. (Cumin isn't supposed to be spicy, right? I normally love cumin on meat.)

Anyway, how can I cut down the spicy?

I added yogurt & maple syrup LOL

It's a potato with onions & yellow split pea puree soup. I tasted it at the Food festival & it wasn't spicy at all, so I'm very disappointed.

Thanks

Mother's Dumplings - A Real Chowfind

Just Wondering Swiss Chalet or Nando's Chicken? Which Do You Prefer?

I agree w/ you 100%

Their food sucks.

Ever since they changed to trans fat free oil, their fries are no longer good & I used to love their sauce.

I end up going there & spending the same money I would pay for a really good meal.

Happy New Year everyone : )

Ambasaddor - W. Beaver Creek & Hwy 7

LOL, actually I was talking about the Japanese Buffet rest. called Wasabi.

Does Big Mouth have good dim sum? Selection, as I don't eat pork or seafood, only chicken, beef or veggie & it seems the only stuff that seems tasty enough when I have loved the dim sum is the beef, not the chicken or veggie, although the dim sum place at Y & E has really good variety. There's only 1-2 dishes on't like.

I'm off to investigate what's possible for tonight's dinner, any suggestions that don't have expensive NY Eve prices?

NO Dim Sum LOL

Ambasaddor - W. Beaver Creek & Hwy 7

Yup, that's all it takes, is one bad experience.

If I had been going & the food was great & I had one bad exper., I'd say something, or inquire if the chef had indeed changed, but since this was my first time, I'll just have to find some place else.

I want to try the one at the hotel, but everyone keeps saying it's soooo expensive, but after what I paid, how expensive could it be LOL

Happy New Year : )

Michelle

Ambasaddor - W. Beaver Creek & Hwy 7

I forgot, we also ordered the tofu with soy sauce.

I just heated up the food & after seasoning it, it was much better, except for the chicken with mushrooms, it was all bones, forget about fat. I had to be careful not to swallow them, as they were in bits & pieces, so I finally just gave up.

Ambasaddor - W. Beaver Creek & Hwy 7

Well reading an Oriental bill isn't all that easy LOL since I didn't know what was what price & I just wanted out of there. If they miscalculated, that just further proves my view of them & no, I will never go back. I normally don't have such a negative experience at restaurants, but when I do, I don't give them a 2nd chance.

My son wanted to go for the all you can eat Japanese buffet in the same plaza & I said no b/c I wanted Dim Sum. I should have listened to him.

I ordered the following (trying to remember)

1. 2 steak balls & the worchestire (sp?) sauce didn't even seem like Lean Perins which is the best worchestsire (sp?) sauce around & like I said, they were bland.
2. 2 beef chung fung (this was the best dish IMO)
3. 1 rice noodle vegetable (same as #2, but vegetarian)
4. 1 steamed shrimp balls (I don't eat the shrimp, only my son does)
5. 1 shrimp sticks or whatever they are called
6. The egg noodles with bean sprouts that I thought was the most expensive since it was labeled an XL dish
7. The steamed chicken w/ mushroom which was all fat & it was too hot to taste & I was full already, but the mushroom was bland from what I could taste & we are talking shitake mushrooms here, so what a waste, as I love shitake.
8. The spring rolls
9. 2 mango puddings which were gross. My son loves mango pudding, so I'm used to ordering it & this was just mediocre IMO & so not good, I gave it to him.

I think that's it.

It was $70 including a $5-6 tip.

Yes, we left with extra food, but if it sucked, I'm now leary about even having it.

Ambasaddor - W. Beaver Creek & Hwy 7

Yeh, Scarb. is just too far.

As for the grease, if that was the only issue, I'd still go back, I don't let one dish ruin it for all the others, but clearly it wasn't & one thing I've learned is that just b/c someone from that ethnicity says the food is good doesn't mean it is.

I once had 2 Greek guys give me a recommendation that I didn't think was anything great.

After searching around on my own, I found a much better place right next door.

Ethnicity doesn't mean good palette, it just means they are familiar with their food.

As for the price, that wasn't the issue, if I had liked the food overall, $70 would have been fine.

To each his own, I'm not average, I'm very picky about food, quality & flavour.

Thanks : )

Ambasaddor - W. Beaver Creek & Hwy 7

Hi all,

Well after reading tons of rave reviews for this place re: their Dim Sum, I'm not very happy.

I drove all the way from Brampton rushing to get there before they finished at 3:30 after I was misinformed the first time I called saying that they close their Dim Sum at 4.

I feel like I just wasted $70 (includes tip) - 2 people.

Their spring rolls (chicken & mushroom) were too oily & tasteless.

Their egg noodles with been sprouts had maybe 15 been sprouts & once it cooled down, it's like I put lip gloss on my lips. Tasty at first, but the oil is just toooo much.

The beef balls while HUGE were tasteless.

Their steamed chicken was a mistake. It was almost all fat.

Their mango pudding tasted like it wasn't fresh or even authentic.

Nice staff, but the food wasn't even passable IMO.

I'm used to Tai Pan at Avenue/Eglinton. They used to have sit down till they went all take out & I haven't been there since.

Even the Dim Sum place at Y & E is better.

What a waste of money, I should have listed to the one person who said they didn't like Ambassadors.

Merry Christmas everyone : )

Michelle

Crepe Place

Thanks guys, I'm surprised no on remembers that place or there isn't more of a selection in Toronto. : )

Michelle

El Fogon on St. Clair just W. of Bathurst (Peruvian Food)

I have to say I had a great experience here.

The chicken soup with chilantro was great & the grilled chicken & rice was very very tasty.

The staff was also very friendly.

My son loved it too.

Enjoy : )

Thanks for "Organic Garage" Recommendations!

Yes, some of their prices were good (can't beat that produce), but other stuff was expensive.

They have my vote for now & I hope they stock up on more items that aren't produce related.

I tried their "organic" chicken hot dogs & both me & my son didn't like them at all. They weren't really organic, they carry a line that doesn't want to pay the price to get the label & I don't blame them, but I didn't like them. They were soooo heavy, I almost died & if I threw out the last dog, you know it had to suck.

You can sign up right online, that's what ezine means : ) (magazine or newseletter for the net "e")

Here ya go...

Crepe Place

LOL, nope, neither of those & the Apricot Tree is never open really. I went there once & it was closed at the earliest hour.

Cora's food sucks IMO.

I can't believe we have so few crepe places in all of TO

persian

No offense, but their food is not up to good Persian standards.

The first time I went it was pretty good. The chicken kabob wrap was very good, the salad was ok, soup was yucky & the Gorme Shabzi was so so, but the 2nd time it was sub par on even the items I did like.

While the food is cheap, a lot of cheap Persian restaurants are opening up w/ very low quality food.

I went to another one that has more of a take-out with only one table & I wasted my money in the end & the food was luke-warm which means it's going bad as it sits on the counter for hours being at a tempature where bacteria starts to form.

Darvish on Yonge just south of Steeles was one of the best, but they closed down a few years ago & I have yet to find a comparible replacement.

Thanks for "Organic Garage" Recommendations!

I finally made to the Organic Garage.

The biggest drawback is their lack of selection compared to Ambrosias.

Also, their staff isn't very educated on even the simplest of things, like they didn't know what pesto was (how can you work around food & not know what pesto is), or Select tea. A brand from the States, but still. If you work in a health food store, knowing this is a must.

But, it's nice & clean & fun & if you get on their ezine list, they seem to get really good produce buys, like organic peaches for 97 cents, never seen that price b4.

Also, blueberries for $1.97 or something like that.

They do have a large selection of organic produce it seems & they keep it fresh, but I bought yellow/orange tomatoes there & there was no sign telling me if it was organic or not & once again, the cashier (a kid pretty much) didn't know or bother to find out.

Very friendly though, but the kids were smoking right outside the door which doesn't give the company a great image. Smoking next to a health food store LOL

They were also out of the nut thins & when I told them about it in an e-mail, I never got a response back.

Thanks

Michelle

Crepe Place

No, I have that one bookmarked & they have very few meal crepes.

I'm not looking for sweet crepes, but meal ones.

Thank you : )
