Metro Detroit-Corned Beef Hash
Beverly Hills Grill has great corned beef hash... made from scratch daily.
rib city - troy, mi
Very scared...I made the mistake of eating there. The ribs were so small, like from a suckling pig...Not Kidding. You will leave hungry. The sides were equally subpar. The smoked turkey was sliced off a turkey roll and not true smoked turkey. The only smoke came with the mirrors. I'd be surprised if their ribs didn't come vacuum sealed and they just reheated them. The post below has to be from an employee.
Best Detroit area BBQ ribs?
I don't know if it's the same, but I ate at the one in Troy...Awful. The smallest ribs I've EVER seen. Like from a suckling pig. Steer clear of Rib City.
Detroit's Roma Cafe overrated?
Well it was a buffet. What do you expect? And as far as I know, Roma operates as a regular restaurant during most of the week. The pasta was probably blanched, then used for something else, resulting in it being cooked twice. Buffets/brunches at restaurants that don't operate as Buffets all week long are literally for the sole purpose of moving food almost old enough to be thrown out. Essentially, you're paying them to remove their garbage. How thoughtful of you.
Quick recs needed! Mexican in Detroit Metro: Mariachi Mexican Restaurant in Canton MI
Taqueria Lupita is the only place worth traveling to, in Michigan, for Mexican food. Everything else is just a glamorized Taco Bell.
Sushi in Detroit?
Ronin is good...but very pricey. $4 for a bowl of rice is insulting. I prefer noble fish and mon jin lau has ronin beat on the extracurriculars like drinks and other cuisine.
Fat Burger...Southfield,MI.
I went the other night around 10PM and had to wait about 20 minutes. I'd suggest just waiting a couple weeks. It's nothing special. It's not bad at all...just not worth waiting that long for a burger. I would place Fatburger in between McDonald's and Red Coat Tavern.
Fatburger in Detroit [moved from Midwest board]
Yeah Sonic...Pure Garbage. A few years ago I tried them twice in Florida, and it was hugely disappointing and overpriced. Chick-Fil-A rules is good. But as far as fast food burgers go. I still think West Coast In N Out is the benchmark.
The Fly Trap Restaurant Ferndale MI
Toast is a great little place too. Great, omelets and Eggs Benny. I found it's better during the week as opposed to the weekend when they are slammed and quality suffers ever so slightly...They're strictly breakfast and lunch and close at 2 or 3 PM.
The Fly Trap Restaurant Ferndale MI
I have eaten here a half dozen times and I can attest to it's excellence.
More thoughts on Bagger Dave's (Berkley, MI)
I suppose that which would explain why my burger was unremarkable--no fat = no flavor. They also claim they were established in 2006, yet opened a month ago. All of this is no surprise with it's BW3 influence, another overpriced junk food emporium.
Looking For Knife Suggestions
You really want the Shun Classic 7" dimpled Santoku. The ultimate all purpose cutting tool. The dimples are great for foods that stick like cheese. Great balance made with VG10 steel (much sharper because it can be fabricated thinner, and holds an edge far longer then high carbon steel found in german knives.) This is the go to guy in my knife bag.
Espresso machines. Help!
I highly recommend the Baby Gaggia. I've found it to be an absolute beast made of quality components at a very reasonable price and will serve you well for years. On a side note, your name wouldn't happen to start with a "J" ,would it?
Valentines day in Detroit area
I guess I have to go back and try it... I ate at Bourbon Steak instead, because at Saltwater I was overcome by an "old fish" odor at the hostess stand during the first week of it's opening. Being a seafoodie, that was all I needed to walk straight next door.
Valentines day in Detroit area
I meant that figuratively...Yes I have eaten there several times, and have tried 15 or so items off their menus now and I gotta say not one was disappointing. You made a comment about how it was in the casino...My point was it didn't impact my opinion of it or decision to eat there. The Lark is so easy to suggest it's the pinnacle of fine cuisine in our area, blows the others out the water...I'm saying it's the No Brainer on your list, as in where I would take your recommendation--I view the others on your list as overpriced and overrated and not in the same league as the Lark.
Valentines day in Detroit area
That's pretty funny...I can imagine your interest. It's really that bad, simply amazing bad. Go for a drink there, observe, check out the dining room, and then eat at Mitchell's, Cameron's, or Flemings.
Valentines day in Detroit area
Yeah I really didn't want to get into it...I simply picked the Lark because it is a no brainer--the best of the choices Doc suggested. It never occurred to me that Puck's was in the casino and that was a bad thing...I'm not a gambler, so I walk past all the derelicts tossing coins in the machines and staring at the flashing lights, and simply enjoy some hot delicious food. I really think the others, Opus, Whitney, etc are overpriced and overrated. I've been to them all, but perhaps I do need to go to The Whitney again as another poster mentioned it has changed hands.
Valentines day in Detroit area
Hmmm...I've had several dishes at Puck's and they've all been very good, not the best, but far from anemic...Solid food. You made some good choices, but I think, while they asked for an amazing experince, it's an easy way out to recommend THEE most expensive places in town. Of your choices I'd go with the Lark.
Valentines day in Detroit area
I recommend Puck's Grille at MGM. Very good food and service. Everything made in house. You could also try the Beverly Hills Grille or Jeremy both very good as well. And definitely listen to Royal Oaker--don't go to Chen Chow unless you want to be pissed off.
Moy's Chinese in Farmington, MI
Hong Hua, is an award winning restaurant on Orchard Lake in the old Bill Knapp's building, and quite frankly is the best Chinese Food in Farmington Hills. It's very well done, homemade sauces and stocks for soup, a few dollars more per dish than the cheap super fried garbage which has become typical of chinese fare in the area. Truly special. Further down Orchard Lake in Orchard Mall is Shangri La and they are pretty good as well.
Bagger Dave's in Berkley (Detroit)
Yeah, you're right about that... The only thing I've gathered from her writing is that she likes to eat food...I've never read a negative word in her column. Now Sylvia Recter in the Free Press however..., she'll tell you her opinion...she just recently issued a very accurate review of Chen Chow in Birmingham. That's a critic for you.
Pad Thai Tips and Tricks
It is very easy and cooks very fast once you get the technique down. The key is to not overcook your proteins. Whether it be poultry or seafood, you have to cook them at high heat, get a nice crusty sear one side, then add your other ingredients like egg, veg, sauce and rice noodles, even while the protein is still undercooked, the steam generated from your sauce and noodles will finish the protein.
Bagger Dave's in Berkley (Detroit)
Is it really the same ownership as BW3's...Because that would explain a lot Ha Ha! Easily in the top ten worst eateries I've been to. Yeah I did notice the 2006 thing was was kinda questioning that as well.

Troy/Birmingham dining
Call me crazy, but it sounds like your judgement on Mon Jin Lau is cast based on your husband's unfortunate experience and has little to with the actual food. I've never had a bad experience there, and like the two other rebuttals to your claim have suggested, they use high quality ingredients which justify the bit larger price. Their sauces are homemade, and they use consommes for their soups. These things take time and cost money. While you won't see obscene portions designed for the price over taste eater, there is plenty of food in each dish. I again recommend them without any hesitation.
Troy/Birmingham dining
Troy has a Capital Grille, Ruth's Chris and Morton's within a mile of each other on Big Beaver Road if you want a steak. Mon Jin Lau is excellent. In Birmingham you've got mostly safe eats...much to choose from...220, Cameron's, Mitchell's, Northern Lakes Seafood. I would heed Butterball's advice and stay away from Chen Chow.
Bagger Dave's in Berkley (Detroit)
I just ate there tonight, and i have to say it was nothing special, the last thing I would call it is Legendary...Just another overpriced burger place with a catchy name... the fries were cold... but hey at least they had big screen tvs
Best Detroit area BBQ ribs?
For my money I like Tunnel BBQ in Windsor, technically not Detroit, but it's in the area... make sure you go there on a busy weekend dinner service for best quality. In Detroit I like Slows. Bone yard i think is overrated, they don't trim their bones and they have tons of connective tissue on them. I've had Ginopolis, which is an extension of the Montgomery Inn, and i'm just not a fan of the fall of the bone kind so much. Just my preference.
Honey Bee Market in Mexican town (Detroit)
Great store, great selections of spices and dried chilis. Also you can find cases of bottled coca cola made with sugar. Always a stop I make when I visit mexicantown.
