L.A. Dish of the Month, July 2015 -- SKEWERS

We had our fill of skewered meats at Honda-Ya Izakaya on Friday night. The skewer highlights were the spicy lamb, chicken skin, chicken wings, and bacon wrapped okra. The non-skewer highlights were the hamachi kama, soft shell crab, and housemade tofu. They had no baby octopus tempura : (. Cost was a little high ... around $90 for the dishes depicted plus grilled corn, a beer, and a soju cocktail. But after you factor in validated parking, it's all good.

L.A. Dish of the Month, July 2015 -- SKEWERS

Great minds think alike! Virtually anything and everything skewered can be found at the 626 Night Market. Stinky tofu too.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

Well I thought I was over and done with pizza for the month but ended up at Pizza Place California in San Gabriel for dinner tonight. Tequila shrimp and chorizo pizza, papaya mango shrimp salad, and complimentary garlic rolls. So delicious. Makes up for the fast food pizza at Pieology ; ).

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Zelo's corn pizza. It's kind of a corny pizza casserole. So delicious with the smoked mozzarella and caramelized onions. Next time you're there, try the beet salad or the broccoli and black bean salad. So much more interesting than the caesar.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

Yes, I also prefer a chewy crust but Pieology's isn't bad...considering it's fast food.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

So I gave Pieology (a member of the "new species of pizzeria") on Monrovia's restaurant row a try. While the crust is lacking that leopard spotting and chewy pull, it's actually pretty good. It's crispy and crackly, very thin crust. The pizza depicted is a rustic veggie. There's one standard size, which is equivalent to a medium pizza (11-12"). The toppings were really fresh, including the burata. Not too shabby for $7.95. A customized pizza topped with anything and everything will set you back a whopping $9.95.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

Have you tried Bella Vista Brazilian Gourmet Pizza in Culver City? It's an AYCE pizza place offering about two dozen varieties of savory and dessert pizzas. It's a fun pizza concept that is popular in Brazil. Rotating pizza flavors are made fresh every 10-15 minutes or so, and a server walks around the restaurant and offers diners a slice or two. You can also request your favorite flavor combinations. It doesn't end until you pop. Thank goodness it's thin crust pizza! Fun for date night. P.S. I saw a check-in discount on Yelp.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

Thank you all for the glorious pizza porn. And it's only day 2. Here's a low brow pizza option: pastrami pizza from the Pizza Cart in Temple City. $16.99 for a jumbo 16" pizza. Yellow mustard and chopped pickles included in the mix. Pretty darn tasty.

Hilarious. But I don't see anything in CAPS. Oh pardon me, that would be SEINFELD FOODS. And now there are two votes. Plus you must include soup and muffin tops.

where to get Shirataki noodles??

Thank you! While I was unsuccessful at finding the soba type noodles at the Mitsuwa in San Gabriel, I very happily stumbled upon a case full of shirataki noodle varieties, including one type that blends tofu with the yam noodle. Guess I will be eating pasta for the next week.

where to get Shirataki noodles??

Those soba shirataki noodles sound like the perfect compromise. Are they refrigerated or dehydrated? It would be amazing to find a carb substitute that is appetizing, satiating, and low glycemic but not necessarily a colonic tonic. : )

where to get Shirataki noodles??

There is a Galleria market on Vermont and 4th in Koreatown. Its a gorgeous market. Also for the original poster, there is a Japanese market on Sawtelle and Olympic. Perhaps they carry shirataki?

where to get Shirataki noodles??

I isolated some of the leftover noodles and tried them for breakfast. Keep in mind that they have been marinating in black bean sauce for 20 hrs. The TASTE was delicious. The noodles had softened a little but retained a little bit of the chewiness. The noodles were also flavored nicely even though they cannot absorb the sauce like egg or wheat noodles. On the flipside, the shiratakis did not become expansive or gummy after a night in the frig. But as happycat reported, the noodles do sit heavy on the belly. It's the fiber. Once that resolves itself, I'm heading back to 99 Ranch for another package (and a run bing!). Next batch of noodles will be dressed with rice vinegar. I want to see how they react to acidity.

where to get Shirataki noodles??

Be a hater if you must Ipse... But after having them for lunch in a stir fry with chicken, veggies, and a little black bean sauce, I am now a devotee. The noodles are crunchy like glass noodles or kelp noodles, despite being rinsed and boiled for 10 mins as I prepared the rest of the stir fry. But that crunch added a nice texture and a little fullness to the dish. Note that if you buy a brand that packages the noodles in tight little bundles, you should untie the knots prior to boiling. The knots do not release themselves in the boiling water, and you would end up with little clumpy shirataki gnocchi instead of free flowing strands. I used the entire package in the stir fry since the noodles do not expand and therefore do not provide a lot of volume. The bottom line is that I did not miss the rice. And that alone is worth any fibrous fall out I might encounter. Will report back on that tomorrow...

Your post inspired me to purchase a package of shirataki noodles, which I found in a refrigerator case at the 99 Ranch Market in Arcadia (only a 30 mile drive from the westside!). The package contains 8.82 oz of yam noodles, worth a whopping total of 15 calories, 0 carbs. It sells for $1.59. I plan to stir fry them tomorrow so I will report back on taste and texture.

It's an appetizer called Causa Trio. Yellow Peruvian mashed potato towers topped with avocado and either shrimp, chicken, or octopus.

Excellent Peruvian food in L.A.?

Hidden away in West Covina is a relatively new Peruvian restaurant called Misky Misky. It's rather fancy, considering the neighborhood, and the 8 variations on ceviche is an unexpected treat.
