when you are sauteeing the onion and garlic add equal or slightly lesser amounts of finely diced (or put through a cuisinart - even better) carrot, celery, leek, or even bell peppers, it adds a lot of flavour to the sauce

Liquor brand/quality used in cocktails

vodka- stoli for value, ketel one is also a solid brand
rum - flor de cana 7 year old is one of the top rums out there at a very fair price, havana club 7 is good, mount gay and mount gay xo are great.
whisky - canadian - 40 creek is the best for your money, crown royal is good, as is wisers
bourbon - makers mark
scotch - teachers
