Casual, French bistro food for a Sunday evening dinner? (Downtown West End )

I second the recommendation for Mas des Oliviers; I have had many excellent experiences there!

Cafe Prague

There was also the always interesting (Hungarian) Coffee Mill -- with a uniquely mixed clietele and rather inexpensive for the downtown core. I think it was the very first Montreal restaurant I ever ate in (April 1976)!

Montreal food needs: French, steak, brunch

Very good "french" options:
Mas des Oliviers -- menu more extensive than shown on-line -- tratitional southern French -- easy walk.
Laloux -- excellent relaxed Montreal bistro
Salle-a-manger -- great food but noisy.

You seem to have brought out the best in the CH--ers here: really solid advice all around!

Given where you are staying, just a few footnotes:

Olivier Potier: great French high-end pastries 1490 rue Sherbrooke (just a bit east of you at the Versailles).

Also for interesting Persian mimi-pastries, try Nocochi's at Sherbrooke and MacKay;

a block or so further South on rue MacKay (1432) is Cafe Myriade, Montreal's best coffee.

5 days in Montreal - help us shorten our restaurant list!

Be sure to try some Cheve Noire -- a hard aged goat cheese -- at Marche des Saveurs!

What local beer available in Montreal supermarkets is worth buying?

I will second Ambroise apricot wheat beer!
If you are in the downtown core, try Marche (rue) Stanley for a reasonable selection...

Montreal unique food/restaurant?

You might want to try the Spanish/Basque small plate place: Pintxo (avenue des Pins)
Also the eclectic, adventurous Salle a Manger (av Mont-Royal)

Montreal Itinerary - Opinions needed

I ate at 'salle a manger' about a week ago. Beware the on-line menu was not up to date! I ordered two of their smaller plates -- they both were plenty large enough for me. I very much enjoyed the striped bass ceviche and the pulled rabbit in a steamed bun (with a glass of glass of California pinot noir for the latter and a manzanilla sherry with the former --great). I had a bite of my date's chocolate dessert including vanilla goat milk ice cream that was great.

Good "French Canadian/Quebecois" food

Make sure your friends eat some Quebec cheese -- possibly on a cheese-plate for dessert. Or serve some at home home, before, or after, with wine or Quebec beer or cider.

Everybody is talking about the fillings. What are their tortillas like? ( It is so long since I had a really good wheat tortillas that I am starting to forget what a really good freshly made tortillas tastes like...)

Need a good place to eat downtown Montreal...

BTW: Has anyone been to JULIEN lately. It has been years since I have been there. Their terrace was always nice for a summer lunch as I recall.

Our Ecume beer is a truly rustic, earthy beer, proud of its unique island personality and its salty maritime origines. This highly refreshing beer combines a seductive, robuste bitterness with lovely herbal and salty accents lent by fresh ingredients from the Madelinot soil.

Help with Local Beers...

I picked a very unique beer from the Magdelen Islands called Ecume at Marche Stanley (a good place to shop for Quebec beer). Also got an excellent Ste-Amboise apricot wheat beer there.

Olivier Potier - New amazing pastry shop and bakery

The Paris-Brest was awesome (actually deserving of that poor abused word). The eclairs apparently disappear VERY fast -- I will try again to sample one. The croissants are above average and heavier too. Friendly service.

Very good advice from Oliver B, but add Mas des Oliviers (rue Bishop) for rich southern French: Sunday dinner or lunch (Monday) or dinner . Yummy!

Quiche Lorraine

Can't really suggest a true substitute but the cafe in the basement of Ogilvy's does a nice Quiche Lorraine with a huge choice of sides. It is, however, no longer cozy since they expanded that space several year ago...

Alexandre's on Peel does a good "made on the premises" Quiche Lorraine -- nice with lentil soup on a winter day with a hardy red wine..
