Visiting San Diego this summer.

Thanks DoctorChow & McGrath!!!
I have a group of girlfriends and we are coming in for a week starting on Saturday. A couple have never been to SD so we are checking out the typical places. I really appreciate having a good list like this to start from.

I like food trucks. I will do a search for them but also wondered if you had a quick opinion.

Any great restaurants in the Newmarket/Aurora, Ontario area?

Lunch with dear friend. Outstanding experience. Service deft, engaging, & seamless. Menu eventive + standard fare available for less adventurous. Ceaser salads crisp, garnished with good portion shaved Parmesan, crostini, & prosciutto. Shared mains at suggestion of waitress. Chicken curry had chunks of white meat chicken well marinated in sauce, accompanied by fresh cucumber/ yogurt salad and rice. Seafood fettuccini had sautéed scallop, tiger shrimp, & sqid - on fresh pasta with tomato ragu & arugula. Desserts were delish! Chocolate mousse in candied pecan basket, and plate of tasters that we couldn't finish. Coffee fresh & hot - topped up. All in $103.00 for 2, including 1/2 litre of good merlot.

Shawerma - suggestions for locations in Scarborough, Markham & Pickering

Took your recommendations and enjoyed 2 shawarma. Tender, juicy and delicious with just the right blend of toppings. I like spicy hot sauce and these did not disappoint. Only draw back is the appearance of messiness and the ambiance means you HAVE to take out. Also for newbies - you order and get your food before paying. They handled an order of 16 just before me - did it all in 10 min. Those guys really move!

Another one for Bellagio. It's our destination place for gelato - flavours rotate and we get the tub of 3 for $10. Great expresso too. My SO loves the sandwiches too!

Whitby/Durham restaurants that don't suck

The Villa is my 'go to' for sushi. Love the maki set - tempura shrimp role for lunch. Yum Yum. Fresh. Fast. Great ambiance and the price is approx. $10.

Wedding cake recommendations? TORONTO

Found! I recently located Mitchel's Cakes in Whitby, run by Pam & Brent Mitchel. The cake we ordered was a small wedding cake - enough to serve 40 and I selected 2 flavours - carrot for the top layer and lemon for the bottom. The icing was butter cream and quite elaborate with all sorts of lovely romantic words in white icing on the large layer with a moss green ribbon and the top layer had the same ribbon, white icing swag infilled with baby pink. Top of the cake were sugar roses with moss green leaves and a pink sugar butterfly.

The cake was fresh, moist, delicious and the icing was traditional butter cream. Cutting the cake was easy - no falling apart, knife moved through easily and the slices stayed intact to the plates. Everyone asked for seconds (!) and enjoyed the 'real' cake experience.

Mitchel's service a dream. Cost reasonable ($100) and they worked on a custom approach with attention to detail and a very nice interaction. Great experience! Highly recommend them! Online at www.mitchels.ca and available via phone at 416 737 3303.

Enjoy!

Woman's Bakery

Sorry for the delay - I thought I had provided an update and find that I did not.

This bakery is a throw-back dream. 'Real' ingredients for a my 1950's birthday cake craving. I enjoyed the perfect yellow cake with icing and so did my SO. There is a line-up and everything appears to be created/baked on the premises. Highly recommend.

Shawerma - suggestions for locations in Scarborough, Markham & Pickering

I have just been initiated into the wonderful world of shawermas. The one I located is out in the west end where I used to go for business. I'm never on Hurontario now and would love to locate a few location suggestions for great shawerma in the east end.

Your advice appreciated!

best burgers in T.O.

WOW!!!! Big Boy's Come out to Ajax - yes, way way out here! Whites Rd. & Kingston SE corner in the strip mall. 1/2 #, toasted kaiser, handmade, never frozen, toppings galore - is juicy without being obnoxious about it. I prefer my WD and it is perfect. And the fries... did I mention the fries? Large cut, rustic (peel on) very crisp with fluffy potato inside.

The Big Boy combo is $8.95 - burger w/ all the toppings, fries and canned drink. I have not ventured out further than this but they have other menu items - including a deep fried mars bar (surely a heart-attack waiting to happen???).

This puts Johnny's (Scarberia) to shame for quality, speed, friendly service etc. Seats are very guyish - looks like a truck w/ galvanized metal tables and chairs that are actually car seats. 2 large screen TV's. Busy and capable. Highly recommend!!!

A Good Burger

Yikes!
I love a good burger and Johnny's keeps coming up so I took my favourite 'CH' adventure and tried them out. Saturday's lunch was such a disappointment. I ordered a cheeseburger well done (yes, I like them a bit charred...) and topped with fried onions, mustard, BBQ sauce, double pickle and tomatoes. Burger was well done but so thin and dry - such a disappointment. I liked the bun - it was a bit of a step up from a traditional hamburger bun, bigger/fluffier so it lasted as long as the burger did. Fries (good serving size) are skinny and were lightly salted and until I put vinegar on them, crispy. Gravy was clearly a mix (yuck). Chocolate shake was very average and small. My cost was just shy of $10.00 and it is an eat out experience.

btw... they have good mechanics, the line moves quickly, the use a numbering system, everyone seems to enjoy his work (no females in sight) and lots of parking. It's on the NE corner, just south of Shepard - a bit hard to find unless you know it's there...

So - I won't be back. Will be trying others though. I've already done a review on Allen's - they are great!

new Pho 88 at Yonge/Empress Walk

Lunch at Pho 88 Yonge/Empress walk today. Enjoyed my choices of deep fried veg. spring roll, dressed with crushed peanuts - came with a side of pickled carrot/white radish that I really enjoyed and a soya dipping sauce that was spicy and salty. Looked hand-made and was quite large. Followed with chicken satay (really yummy - spicy and charcoal cooked) over a mango salad (not green) that included red onion and red peppers. Lots of chopped cashews. Delish - all for $11.00. Lots of young funky servers who provided deft and fast service. I'll be back.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

fruglescot - I really enjoy your posts - especially the one on the Pollan lecture...

On this thread --- I'll try them out and get back to you... being a chocolate fanatic, I am ok with my BT's drizzled but only if the chocolate is very high grade... heretic that I am!!!

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

I ran across this post and wanted to add to the list. Today I had a buttertart from Sweet Indulgences - bakery and cafe at Coxwell and O'Conner - West side. Tart was not runny, was drizzled with very high grade chocolate and the crust was a flaky and soft wonder. Yum!

If you are on your way north, just south of Stouffville at 9th line and 19th on the East side is a garden/grocery/bakery store that sells runny butter tarts - don't recall the name. Just know the tarts are good and you can get them with/without nuts and with/without raisins...

Brunch Suggestions close to Warden & Eglinton

Thought I'd close the loop. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch (I had brunch) at Jawny today. I would like to go back there in the summer - that patio must be wonderful when the sky is clear and you can see the stars and enjoy all the trees from the ravine.

Love the way they start you out with a warm French baguette with a pot of butter and some strawberry jam. Nice touch. I had the crab eggs benny - quite good, included a small fruit salad to start and paired with a spicy caesar w/ horseradish - delish! Home fries on the side were mushy and just warm - I like mine crisp and hot. My friend had the tandoori chicken salad and particularly mentioned both the chicken and the candied nuts. Neither one of us could finish our portions. Coffee was very good and bottomless. They did not rush us out - they removed the dishes and offered coffee many times. We were able to stay and chat for 2.5 hours. Lots of families - they appear to have great desserts for kids.

I want to go back and try out some of the other menu options with my SO.

Brunch Suggestions close to Warden & Eglinton

Well enjoyed the drive over on this sunny winter day. Had a wonderful french onion soup, the fries (I'm an addict) and C.salad. I liked the soup, the salad was a bit sweet for my taste and the fries were pretty good - clearly homemade and dusted with seasoning. Spicy Caesar good but served w/ a dried lemon vs. lime. Waitress attentive and very sweet - sat me by the window so I could read my book and enjoy a peaceful time.
