Dinner near ROM?

There are several Japanese options nearby. Sushi Inn on Cumberland and Asuka on Yorkville come to mind. I prefer Asuka but it is probably a little more costly. There is Hung Pho across from the ROM for Vietnamese, but the quality is hit and miss.

Please help for a restaurant in Chinatown

We had a pre wedding get together at Asian Legend on Dundas which is not far from City Hall. We were given our own room but it accommodated about 12. I don't know if they have larger private spaces. Worth enquiring though. The food was very good but not spectacular.

where to buy whipping cream that is not ultra pasteurized to make creme fraiche in Toronto

I want to make creme fraiche. Recipes seem to call for whipping cream that is not ultra pasteurized. Is such a product available in Toronto? I can buy ready made creme fraiche at Alex's but it is expensive.

Panini press -stove top or electric?

I want to purchase a panini press. What do you think of the Le Creuset grill pan and press that is placed over a burner vs an electric press? If the latter - which brand?

Where can I get cannoli shells in Toronto?

I know you can buy them at Continental Noodle at Jane and Lawrence. Pasta Goodness on Marlee, south of Glencairn is a branch of Continental Noodle but with less inventory. If the latter location is closer to you I am certain they would bring them in from the original source.

IParis restaurants open in August?

I will be in Paris for a week in August. I have looked at the websites of my favourite spots(Chez Michel, Chez L'Ami Jean etc.) and see that they are all closed. Does anyone know of good places of a similar quality and price range that are open in August?

What to do with leftover heavy cream?

The last time I had a quantity of heavy cream before leaving on a vacation I tried freezing it. I thawed it in the fridge and used it in my Cuisinart ice cream maker and could tell no discernable taste or texture difference than when I used fresh.

Favorite cheesecake recipes

My favourite is the Three Cities of Spain recipe that I believe is on Epicurious. It is very easy and the results are silky smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. It is a light textured cheesecake, so if you prefer a heavier New York style, this recipe is not for you. I also like its simple sour cream vanilla topping.

cooks Illustrated almost no knead bread - anyone else tried?

I let it rise for the full 18 hours ( I'm obssessional), but I get the feeling it doesn't matter too much in spite of the big window of time recommended. I put it together one evening and let it rise overnight, so the rising time doesn't feel like a big deal. Let us know what you think of the final product.

cooks Illustrated almost no knead bread - anyone else tried?

When Mark Bittman posted Sullivan Street Bakery's recipe for no knead bread the chowhound board lit up with responses. I got on the bandwagon and made the bread several times. It always looked great and the crust was indeed a thing of beauty. However, I found the bread itself too wet and not particularly flavorful. This last weekend I followed the Cooks Illustrated variation on the original recipe which calls for the addition of lager and 15 seconds of kneading. The results were superior, with the beer adding a sourdough flavour that I liked. The bread was also not nearly as wet. Would love to hear of other results with the new or even old method.

Where to buy fresh lamb shanks?

You can get them at Nortown. I would suggest calling first because they freeze what they don't immediately sell.
