Place to Take Mom for 88th Birthday-Not Too Far From Sylmar
Tuesday is my mom's 88th birthday and I am planning on taking her out to dinner.
I live in Silver Lake and since I'm driving up to Sylmar (where she lives) I don't want
to embark on another mini road trip once I get there.
I was looking at Alessio's menu and it looks very good so, if nothing better is suggested,
that's where we'll go. But, I was thinking that it would be nice to go to a place that offers
really great salads, along with nice entrees.
I'm vegan so, obviously, there would have to be some options for me (which is why I'm
thinking salads...they can always be "vegan-ized").

North Valley - Please God, Where is the Good Food?
My mom lives in Sylmar and it's always really hard to find new restaurants to go to with her. It doesn't help matters that I'm vegan. One new place we tried was Cafe Graikos at Tampa and Rinaldi - same shopping center as Whole Foods.
Really good Greek food, lots of vegan/vegetarian options and wonderful service!

Babycakes of NYC opened - Downtown Los Angeles Today
I wasn't at the opening today, however, one of my clients had vegan brownie bites
and chocolate chip cookie dough shipped to me as part of my xmas bonus.
I have to say that I was very unimpressed and won't be rushing to visit the LA
branch.
Where to buy bacalao or salt cod?
I just got the flyer from Claro's Italian Market and they have the dry baccala for $7.99/lb,
the filet is $9.99/lb., which is a good price.
I know their quality is always really good (according to my mom, who's the
baccala queen).

My in-laws' anniversary is Saturday night so we are looking for a fairly nice restaurant
to accomodate their very average taste in food, along with mine and my partner's
vegan-ism.
Someplace between Manhattan Beach and Torrance. No ethnic - I know,
this is kind of hard.

carrying it!!
I'm sorry that I gave the impression that I didn't like it...I will order a pizza from
Cruzer again, but I'll ask for easy cheese. In fact, I may even get one tonight (all
this talk has me craving it tonight!!).
Where to buy Daiya vegan cheese?
We had it on pizza from Cruzer Pizza and, unfortunately, it seemed to us that they put way too much on the pizzas so next time we know to ask for them to go easy with the "cheese".
It reminded me of the lesser quality mozzarrella that a lot of restaurants use in that
it's kind of creamy. but, it was nice to have "cheese" on a pizza for change and i would
definitely recommend it.

Healthy Food in Woodland Hills
Yes, we thought of those 2 and, under normal circumstances we would go to Follow Your Heart (which we love), however, our friend is very, very heavy and, to be blunt, I don't
think she could fit in the chairs they have.
She is used to going to places like Cheesecake Factory, El Torito, etc., so I'm trying
to come up with something that would be like a healthy version of those.

Good food close to Dodger Stadium
Canele in Atwater Village is only a few miles from Dodger Stadium and sounds like
it would fit the bill!
ISO Indian in Eagle Rock (delivery a plus)
India's Flavor is just up the 2 fwy in Montrose, on Verdugo, south of Honolulu.
We have found it to be consistently really good!!
Selling Tap Water as Bottled Water.... [moved from Los Angeles board]
As a restaurant bookkeeper with a few clients using the Natura system I know that
it costs them almost $300 per month to lease the machine.
So, naturally, they have to charge extra for the water.
I do, however, think it's wrong for you to be brought bottled water (which you are charged
for) when you merely order "water".
Lastly, I feel the need to add that I have started out a meal with the Natura water and
had the busser inadvertently refill my glass with tap water and, let me tell you ,
the difference in taste in very noticeable.
Canele Election Night Dinner
I just learned that Canele in Atwater is having a special election night menu:
Romain lettuce and tomato w/bleu cheese dressing
Meat Loaf of Roasted Chicken w/mashed potatoes

They will also have a television on to watch the results.

I believe Tantawan closed on 10/31...at least that what they told me a few weeks
ago, but i haven't been by there since. It's a shame because their food was really good!
Zelo's Pizza (review+pics)
Based on all the rave reviews I've read on Chowhound, my partner and I decided to
try Zelo's tonight. I called this afternoon to see if they would make the corn pizza
without cheese and was happy to find out that they would, When it came time
to order (we decided that we wanted to do take-out) I called back and the guy
that I spoke with this time said that they couldn't do it. When I told him of my
earlier phone call he put me on hold and came back and said it was okay.
I also asked how the pizza would hold up from Arcadia to our house in Silver Lake and
he suggested that they par-bake it and we finish it at home. Great!!
So, we made the drive, which, in no traffic, was quite a breeze, picked up the pizza (which smelled amazing), came home and pre-heated our oven to 500 degrees (per the instructions on the take out menu) for about 20 minutes and baked the pizza for 10 minutes.
It was absolutely delicious!!! There is a blub on the menu about how rich their
pizza is and most people only eat 1 or 2 slices. Well, I think the cheese must
be what makes it rich because we only baked half of the pizza and it turns
out we both could have eaten more. But, the upside is LEFTOVERS!!!
So, this is my new favorite pizza...actually, it may be the only pizza I will ever
go out for.

Need Delivery Ideas for Mt Prospect 60056
My mother-in-law is visiting her cousin in Mt Prospect this week and my partner
and I would like to have a dinner delivered to them on her birthday, 7/16.
We would like something nice, no pizza, chinese, etc. Is there a gourmet

Flor Morena Space Update
I heard yesterday that Michelangelo is hoping to move into the Flor Morena space.
There's been quite a bit of activity lately and, strangely, all the windows and doors
have been covered with plywood.
ASIA restaurant in Atwater/Los Feliz
Same owner, new chef. They have also changed the name to Asia Bistro.
The menu has been completely made over and seems much more interesting.
I was happy to see a number of vegan options.
