Spice Goddess on Cooking Channel

So far, I really like her show. She does do a little too much oohing and ahhing when she tries the food, and I agree a little more explanation of some of the spices would be welcome, but overall it's informative and she's so pleasant to watch and listen to. Food looks absolutely lovely, like the salmon and sweet potato cakes she made last week.

Seeking Friday night dinner rec for Portsmouth area...

oh, duh! Thanks for noting that!

Seeking Friday dinner recs for Portsmouth/KP area

Hi, I'm looking for a place to go Friday night for a birthday dinner in the Portsmouth/KP area. A place that has good fish dishes and delicious vegetables, and interesting drinks and desserts....and the type of atmosphere that makes you want to stay a while. Would that be Anneke Jan's, Green Monkey, Black Trumpet? Anneke Jan's is appealing- anyone had a recent experience there, or at the others? Many thanks!

Annarosa's Bakery moving to Salisbury

This is really a bummer. I've always loved walking to Annarosa- driving there won't be the same. I'm glad they're not just going out of business, at least. But that Tannery location is so nice, and it seems there's enough space...? What's really weird is that a deli/convenience store is going in there, when there's already so many places in that area to get sandwiches, etc. Maybe it will be an exceptional deli? Still, very sad about Annarosa leaving that spot. Awesome bakery.

eggless eggnog

That's not nutty at all. Soynog is your answer! It's really, truly delicious. This is the only time of year it's available in the stores, and is in the soymilk section. It's not as thick as real eggnog, but tastes very similiar. It's great with rum, just plain over ice, or in coffee (with fresh nutmeg, delicious). There are some other soy versions, but Soynog is the best.

Breakfast Stowe, Waterbury, VT area?

McCarthy's is not known for its organic ingredients and the food is mediocre. Why is this place always the first one mentioned for breakfast in Stowe? Skimpy on the maple syrup (in VT!) and the "fresh-squeezed" OJ is watered down. Plus you come out smelling like a diner and it's really loud, not cozy at all. Try Green Goddess, and the restaurant at Topnotch does delicious breakfast.

DREAM meal in Portsmouth NH

Good response negrazer! I think it's interesting, too, when someone shoots everything down without identifying the places that set such a high standard, without simply comparing the offerings of a town like Portsmouth to Boston, which just doesn't mean anything. Of course Portsmouth has average restaurants but it also has a nice selection of very good ones considering its size.

Plum Island / Newburyport Food

Mad Martha's used to have very good breakfasts. The last two times I was there- within the last six months- it was nothing close to delicious. The fish cakes tasted less-than-fresh, and my pancakes were actually dry. They also charged for a teeny medicine cup of maple syrup. Any place that is stingy with maple syrup in N.E. and serves dry pancakes- off the breakfast list. Did ownership change or something?

foodie visit to Nantucket

American Seasons! Great place, loved everything we had there.

good sangria in New Hampshire?

Um, I love a well-made cosmopolitan, but I also recognize good sangria (one of my favorites is at Dali), and frequently make it myself with a variety of fresh fruit (and almost always including fresh orange). As long as you use fresh everything and the right wine, it is foolproof. Natural sweetener, aside from the fruit itself, should never be needed. Supposedly the sangria is nice at Agave, but the margaritas are the bigger draw for me there- and definitely surpass the food.

In search of Vegan Greatness

Punjab in Arlington has good, spicey dishes- many of which are vegan. The eggplant is usually perfect there.
Grasshopper in Brighton is fun and can be healthy if you choose right.
Organic Garden in Beverly is very good, all vegan, cooked only by solar power- great choice when you're on the north shore.

Best food all over New England?

Miguel's in Stowe went from very good american-mexican to really sub-average in the last couple years. Still holds a special place in my heart for a nice place to stop for a drink before checking in at stoweflake for the weekend, but there are better places in Stowe (not Mexican). oh and now I just read that they closed- that's shocking and sort of sad. Wish they could've just improved the food.

Bar Harbor in May

Two Cats for breakfast, Gringos for lunch...

Where have you always had a bad meal?

Been to Sabur 3 or 4 times and it was good each time. Such a nice space and I think the food and drinks match the setting very well. Fun little spot.

Finding Cadbury Flake candy bar in Boston area?

Best of British in Newburyport always has Cadbury Flake.

Tamale Molly- can you still order?

I used to order tamales from Tamale Molly (Molly's Tamales?) in New Mexico, but as of a couple years ago, can no longer get in touch with them. Does anyone know if they are still in business, and if so, whether they still ship their tamales out-of-state? I know Whole Foods carries the product, but not in any of the Northeast locations. I have not found any other company that makes such amazing vegetarian tamales and ships nationally. Thank you for any input on this...

Dinner in Newburyport?

10 Center is inconsistent, as are many of Newburyport's restaurants. There is a very good, reliable place (for fish, at least) called Bluewater Cafe, on High Street. They know how to do fish very well, specifically salmon, tuna, tilapia and arctic char- every time we've ordered these they have been done perfectly, which I can't say for 10 Center, Mission Oak, David's, Michaels, or BC. PIG is generally very good, but we did have one less-than-impressive dinner there last summer. Tried Mr. India last week and it was surprisingly fresh and good- didn't expect that outside of Cambridge. Glenn's and Bluewater are probably the two most reliable NBPT restaurants. Amesbury overall has better offerings.
