MS Watermelon's................

Your normal watermelon is too big for the fridge. What the hell do you do with THAT?

Truly, I would eat gobs more watermelon if it were not for the storage problem. I like mine cold with lots of salt or with feta cheese.

Moving to Jackson, MS - looking for local food sources

Yes. I live in Jackson and post mostly about my faves Spice Avenue and La Guadelupe because I'll be damned if I have to live in this crime-ridden horror of a city without good Indian and Mexican food. (My street has lately been the site of some illegal personal care homes run by scam artists which would explain my current bitterness).
We ate at Local 463, Derek Emerson's new place in Madison (at the former Atlantica spot) the other night. The short ribs were terrific but I have a soft spot for short ribs.

The Berry's still have a stand at the Farmer's Market off West Street across the street from the Stadium. I go there frequently. I've never shopped the produce at the High Street Farmer's Market but if the Cafe is any indication, it is terrible.

Memphis TN to Grenada MS restaurant recommendations needed

I love Jake and Rips. They serve almost everything, everything I've eaten there has been good, and it's named after the owner's best friends from childhood - his two dogs.

The Top Grocery-Store Etiquette Gaffes

Often when I buy yogurt, the cashiers pierce the foil top with their dagger-like nails. How's that for great service? Unless I am bagging my own groceries (which I will do when a bag person doesn''t appeal immediately because my goal is to get the hell out of the line as quickly as possible for the benefit of the persons behind me - I don't know why since I seem to be the only person so motivated), I don't notice this until I get home.

Grocery stores - make those cashiers clip their stupid fingernails.

10 Best Things To Eat In MS/AL/LA/AR.................

A recent discussion on northmississippicommenter.com has revealed that the Phillips Grocery in Oxford is vastly inferior to the one in Holly Springs. I have no personal experience in the matter.

In Jackson, Spice Avenue's Indian cuisine is not to be missed as are the tacos at La Guadalupe. And when it comes to higher end food, Walker's is a safe bet.

The Top Grocery-Store Etiquette Gaffes

I was behind a woman who paid for a bunch of groceries with food stamps (now an EBT card). She had one $2 item not covered by food stamps and she insisted that under the Constitution, she could not be charged tax on that item. Instead of the store of taking this woman aside to resolve this ridiculous dispute, every customer behind her had to wait until the idiot gave up. I was so mad, I tossed 14 cents down the conveyor belt.

People who don't keep their carts to the side of the aisle piss me off as do people who still write checks.

Ethnic Food in Jackson MS

I've tried La Morena and felt like their tacos were very much inferior rto the ones at La Guadalupe. The ones at La Guadalupe are LOADED with meat and fresh vegetables.

One warning, don't try the Tres Leches cake unless you are prepared to be addicted.

Breakfast in Rochester, MN?

There's a Dutch pancake restaurant near downtown on West Center a couple blocks from Broadway. I ate the potato pancakes for lunch and they were pretty good.

We're leaving tomorrow after a week at Mayo and my vote for favorite food goes to the chicken nachos and fish 'n chips at Newts. And the food court off of Second Street was great. Instead of a bunch of chains, this food court features kiosks run by local restaurants. I ate Indian food for lunch every day.

Dim sum in Jackson Mississippi (believe it or not)

Facebook friends are reporting that the new Ding How on Old Canton just past Amerigo has fantastic dim sum. I have not tried it yet but will believe it when I taste it.

Best Comeback in Jackson, MS.

I forgot. I had the comeback at Steve's Deli in Capital Towers the other day. It was also very good. All of his salad dressings, like his food, is homemade. He was serving a black bean soup topped with shredded pork. It was excellent.

This Oxford Falls salad dressing is so good I'm taking a bottle to work and pouring it over my $5.00 Chik-Fil-A salad. While I love the Mayflower Greek salad, I always feel cheated when I get the takeout version.

Best Comeback in Jackson, MS.

I just purchased a bottle of comeback at the Maywood McDade's. It's bottled by a company named Oxford Falls out of (ironically) Starkville. It's pretty good. Anyway, it got me pondering the various versions around town. My faves are Crechales', the Mayflower, Hickory Pit and Roosters (the Auditorium serves the same concoction as does Roosters).

The stuff served at the Elite is tasteless. I always wonder why they don't send someone undercover to buy it at the Mayflower.

Any Chile Experts? I made my first batch this weekend and have some questions

"Barefoot Contessa" Ina Garten, I think it's in her Parties (or is it called Entertaining?) book, has the most delicious recipe for a chile made with chicken, tons of red peppers and tomatoes. I've never liked those chicken/white bean chiles. This chicken chile is fantastic. Even my dad loves it and he hates everything.

Anything Chowish in Corinth?

If I remember correctly, a friend of mine is from Corinth and, if she is to be believed, there is nothing worthy of anything there. Of course, I often feel that way about Jackson - the land of too much crime and no French films.

I've made the heavenly white chocolate banana cream pie (recipe made available via Southern Living) that the Buckhead Diner made famous. One day I plan to eat there. Thanks for the link.

Mississippi - help!

I found great tacos and tamales in Tupelo. They can be had at a window in the side of a gas station (the Speedy Gonzales E-Z- Stop) at 1725 North Gloster Street. It serves tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Some days they have tamales as well. The tacos come loaded with fresh onions and cilantro with limes and red and green salsa on the side. The phone number (of the convenience store connected to the window) is 662-620-2821.

Righteous Indigestion

How about that hamburger dive in Atlanta where you have to stand in line to get in and then the little old lady proprietor dishes out verbal abuse while she prepares your hamburger? I've never been but I found the reviews (mostly wildly enthusiastic) to be fascinating.

Found it: Ann's Snack Bar. The Wall Street Journal named it the best hamburger in America.

Ethnic Food in Jackson MS

Went by La Guadalupe to check out today's special. It was Arroz con pollo served with chicken soup on the side. Unfortunately, they had sold out by lunch and since I didn't get there until 5 p.m. I was forced to eat the incredible tacos instead. Maybe next time. I'm still dying to try one of their soups since I am a major soup fan.

I stopped by there around 1 after getting a pedicure down the street. I was determined to get the chicken soup but was told they only have that on weekdays. I happily settled for tacos.

I'm cooking lunch for my Dad tomorrow otherwise I'd drag my boyfriend there for my third meal in three days but maybe we can get dinner there. And then the chicken soup on Monday night.

Did you make it by La Guadalupe? Those tacos are not what all the other Mexican restaurants in town mean by taco.
