looking for pho ga with poached chicken and LIME not lemon
Having grown up eating Viet food, I recommend (if you can find it) Bun Rieu noodle soup, which is a lighter soup with tomatoes, crab-meat, shrimp, basil and tofu. DELCIOUS (my mom makes a great version of this).
Most Viet places don't make it, but Pho Bac in Elmhurst does. Their version is average.
Good soups in Queens?
Since the weather's getting cold, what are some places with good, hearty soups in Queens? (not Asian noodles, because I know all good ones already)
Seafood gumbo, lobster bisque and clam chowder are my faves.
The Next Comfort Food Trend?
If there's any justice in the world, it'll be one of the following:
congee
philly cheesesteaks
hearty soups
No Chipotle's in Queens?
Manhattan has tons. Brooklyn has a couple.
Why zero Chipotle's in Queens? Any theories?
vietnamese sandwiches in elmhurst
Thanks for the info on the banh mi. You're right, Thai Son's version isn't very spicy and they seem to non-chalant about just throwing it together with no options for variation...but whatever.
Anyone have info on the viet places for banh mi in Flushing?
I looked at the other banh mi thread and there wasn't mention...

Best Sandwich in Slope/Carroll Gardens?
Wow, way to conduct a business. Never coming there, thanks for the heads up!
Tips on per kilo/lb buffets? (take-out)
Chinese and Brazilian per kilo/lb buffets are the most well-known.
Any tips on getting the best "bang" for your buck?
I like meat (any kind), but also veggies and seafood.
I made a HUGE mistake today by selecting baked chicken drumsticks (you can't EAT bones!).
best burrito in Queens?
There's no Chipotle in Queens. I've looked. Any place that makes a burrito like Chipotle's in Queens? I like it with light fluffy rice, grilled meats, lots of lettuce and salsa and corn. some cheese.
Not many topics about The Bronx or Staten Island?
I don't understand, I'd like to read more about places in The Bronx and Staten Island so that I can make a destination trip!
Not many topics about The Bronx or Staten Island?
Just wondering why there's hardly ever topics about restaurants in The Bronx or Staten Island on this Outer Boroughs board?
This board is dominated by Queens and Brooklyn eats.
Best Sandwich you ever had?
I get this a couple times a month at Sal, Kris and Charlie's deli in Queens, NY.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/soozifloozy/bomb.jpg
This monstrous sandwich is called The Bomb and it's $7.00 for nine kinds of meat, two or three cheeses and loads of other stuff. It takes me two days to finish it.
Street vendor question...
JFores, mostly Jackson Heights and Astoria area...anyone know if Sammy's Halal is open year round?
LloydG, do you mean the ones standing on the street or the ones in trucks/large food stands?
Street vendor question...
I've only lived in the NY area for a couple months. I have a few favorite street vendors and I was wondering what percentage of vendors go away when the weather gets cold? I'd hate to be deprived of some of this food during the winter.
What percent are seasonal? Does it depend on the type of food or whether it's a cart or truck?
What months do they normally leave and come back?
Thanks so much.
McRib anyone?
You mean the "Chains" forum is the wrong place to talk about a fast food item?
*cuckoo's nest*
McRib anyone?
McDonald's has the McRib on their nutritional value page...and listed it as "avaliable at participating locations"... so there still is hope.
McDonald's had the McRib Farewell tour stunt like two or three times...it was a promotional thing...
McRib anyone?
Anyone live near a Mickey D's that has the McRib right now? If so, where is it?
I've got a craving!
Shepherd's pie in Queens?
What places in Queens have a killer Shepherd's Pie?
I've been having a craving lately...lots of meat and lots of mashed potatoes please!
The only two I've had are at Cronin and Phelan's and Donovan's Pub and both are excellent...
"(Blank) has gone downhill in the last few years..."
When someone says a menu item, whole restaurant, or grocery item, or any other food-related purchase "has gone downhill in recent years", how much of it do you think is nostalgia for yesteryear, trying to sound discerning, or actual perceived downgrade in quality?
I don't know, it just sounds so cliche and lots of times the person doesn't get into specifics...
Cheesesteak experts: New Yorker here...
Any of you native Philly cheesesteak experts ever gotten a good cheesesteak in NYC? Any secret locations in NYC that no one knows about?
I've eaten at Carl's Steaks and 99 Miles to Philly, was curious you found these authentic. What makes a good cheesesteak, do it need to have wiz?
Fried chicken in Woodside area
unknownone - Wow, we posted like two minutes apart on a five-day old thread. haha
anyways, try the hot flavor at UFC, there's a tang to it that's not like buffalo hot wings and it's very different than the soy-garlic one. You just feel a slight, pleasant burn. Yeah, that place is too hot. I ordered take-out at 9:30pm once from there and I was still burning. They need to do something about that.
Fried chicken in Woodside area
UFC is amazing...especially their garlic-soy and hot flavors of wings and drumsticks. Yum.
Also, believe or not, No. 1 Chinese take-out has decent fried chicken, especially when they make it for you made to order and it's sizzling hot. $3.50 for a half fried chicken, not bad.
Sripraphai's pad thai?
Yes, I second getting noodles at Chao Thai...they've got great non-Americanized pad thai there.
Halal Cart Sammy's New Restaurant (Astoria)
So Sammy has a restaurant? Any updates on this anyone?
anyone else try poodam's thai in astoria/lic?
Ratgirl - I'm going to do take-out from here. One of the weird things about Poodams (because I drive by it almost daily) is that it always looks like it's closed because the lighting is so DARK in there.
California style or Chicago deep dish in NY?
That's sad. Not everyone like NY style slices.
Cheeburger Cheeburger in Forest Hills?
Has anyone eaten at the new Cheeburger Cheeburger in Forest Hills along Queens Blvd?
The've got huge burgers ranging from 5 oz to a ONE POUNDER (actually 18 oz. before cooking). If you complete the one pounder in the restaurant, they take a picture of you an put it on a wall of fame.
How are the burgers in general? Does it beat Five Guys?
California style or Chicago deep dish in NY?
This may sound sacrilegious, but anyone know where I can find either California style pizza with unusual toppings or Chicago Deep Dish pizzas that are good in Queens or Manhattan?
Of course, not including chains like California Pizza kitchen or Uno Chicago Pizza. Thanks!
Where to go for my meal in Queens
MRich, if you like Brasilian food, try Brasilianville Cafe on 34th Avenue, between Broadway and Northern in Queens. It's a no frills cafeteria-like place that offers food by the pound. The have a hot buffet style area where you can choose fresh hot dishes and a separate area for unbelievable Brasillian BBQ cooked to order. You can eat you're heart out for under $10 and you get to choose EXACTLY what you pay for.
Best Reuben in Queens?
I love Reubens (especially with pastrami). What's a tasty in Queens? I believe Ben's Best offers a "Rachel Special" which has turkey, pastrami and tongue, but it's kinda pricy at $14.50.
I'm looking a reuben that doesn't skimp on the meat but is under $10. Anyone know if Othello offers a decent one?
"Wet" pad thai in Queens?
This is a strange question, but what thai places in Queens serve their pad thai wet or slimy versus super-dry/crispy? I prefer my pad thai with more moisture and very spicy.
