Umami Burger Santa Monica?

Was in the La Brea location and they said Santa Monica should be opening on Friday, March 12! Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Golden State - 3 strikes and out

Can't disagree more with the negative posts. Just went for the first time last night and was impressed. Ambiance is a bit spartan and loud, but in a hip sort of way (we went early to avoid the masses). What we truly liked was the food and beer. Lamb burgers were a special and were outstanding -- served medium rare, with melted gruyere, roasted peppers and a garlicky sauce. Perfect, squishy bun (not at all crumbly). None of us tried the regular burger (next visit). That said, in terms of tastiness, the lamb burger ranked up there with the Umami burger at Umami burger and the lamb burger at Anthos in NYC (which tie for the top spot in my favorite burger list). GS should add the lamb burger to their regular menu. Sweet potato wedges (not fried) with curry ketchup were similarly delicious, as was the Persian cucumber salad. Regular fries were crispy and good -- nothing special. My Allagash Curieux was a perfect way to wash it all down, followed by some Horchata and Cheesecake Oreo flavored Scoops ice cream. Our server/waiter was very helpful with suggestions of things to try. All in all, it was a great experience and we will return.

Animal -- Recent Reviews Sought

We are considering dining at Animal on Fairfax in the near future and would like input from chowhounders on the quality of the experience there, both food and ambience. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

ISO Best Pebble Beach/Carmel Restaurants

I will be traveling to Pebble Beach for three nights in October and would love some recommendations on where to eat. We will be staying at The Lodge. It has been years since I've been to the area, so I'm not sure if there are any new spots that we must try. Please share your suggestions. Thanks.

Beso v. Citrus at Social

Thanks. We've been to all of the other places recommended by SarahM, and I actually tried to get a reservation at Hungry Cat just because I liked it so much, but we couldn't get one for 6 people on a Saturday night even a month in advance (and I thought they had expanded)! I think we'll try Citrus at Social.

Beso v. Citrus at Social

Thanks. I did try to search but for some reason I missed this link. Sounds like Citrus is the far better choice.

Beso v. Citrus at Social

I am trying to decide whether to take a food-centric group to either Beso or Citrus, both in the Hollywood/WeHo area. Please share your views if you've been to one or the other (or, better yet, both). Thanks very much.

Does anyone know whether South, a new Southern cuisine spot in Santa Monica on Wilshire near 14th Street, is open yet?

ISO Great Cupcakes in Mid-City

I'm familiar with some of LA's great cupcake spots (Ledas, Sprinkles, Susiecakes, Vanilla Bake Shop, etc.), but I'm looking for something similar in the Mid-City area (around West Hollywood). Please share any recommendations.

Tofu Stew is for Chickens

I have searched in vain for the exact address or phone number. I am especially interested in the Korean fried chicken they supposedly serve at BCD Pollo Pillo. HAve you obtained any additional information?

Best ice cream in Los Angeles- an updated poll

Milk on Melrose has outstanding ice cream and excellent milkshakes. Don't know the butterfat content, but it tastes high.

Chinatown Dim Sum/Dumpling House

Thanks. At least that explains the problem. It looks like we'll need to venture into the SGV for what we're looking for. If you are correct about the recent Vietnamese influence, maybe we'll see a few good pho or banh mi places opening up soon.

Best pizza in town - informal opinion poll

Although I like many of the spots heretofore mentioned, for pizza like I've enjoyed in Naples, I go to Pizzicotto in Brentwood. The ingredients are top notch and the crust is always nicely charred.

Chinatown Dim Sum/Dumpling House

I am looking for a dim sum or dumpling restaurant in Chinatown that compares (to the extent possible) to the incredible spots to the east (like Din Tai Fung, Luscious Dumplings, Capital Seafood, NBC, 101 Noodle Express, etc.). I've never had much luck in Chinatown and thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks.

ISO Great Catering Option for New Year's Eve

I am in search of a great, not terribly expensive, caterer for a small new year's eve party on the Westside. We are looking for food that will be fun to eat (like Mexican, BBQ, Pizzas, etc.). Please let me know if you have any good ideas.

ISO Katie Lou Cookies

I had the best chocolate chip cookie in my life the other day at the Blue Plate restaurant on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. They are not made by the restaurant but by a local baker named "Katie Lou" (at least according to the sticker on the cellophane bag). The cookie is an incredible combination of not too crunchy, not too soft oatmeal (sporting a distinct cinammon flavor) with a mixture of milk and dark chocolate chips. No raisins or nuts in this beauty, which runs a whopping $4/cookie (but worth it, believe it or not). Unfortunately, it is hit or miss whether Blue Plate will be selling them any given day, so I wanted to see if any chowhounds out there have an inside track on where I can find these cookies on a more consistent basis.

Opinions Sought on Carlsbad Area Restos

I am considering several different restaurants in and around Carlsbad for some group dinners (about 10 people per group). The attendees all appreciate excellent food, so I'm looking for the best places in the area (cost isn't important). Please let me know what you think of the following spots (a ranking would be much appreciated): Vivace (Four Seasons), Argyle Steahouse (Four Seasons), Blue Fire Grill (La Costa), Tommy V's Steakhouse, The West Steakhouse, Aqua Terra (Fallbrook). Also, please let me know if I'm missing any place. Thanks very much.

Pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving

If you don't mind spending a little extra $$, order a pumpkin pie from the Little Pie Company in New York City. It is outstanding, superb, flaky crust, creamy, not-to-sweet, not-to-spicy filling. They also have the best apple pie I've ever tasted (sour cream apple pie).

ISO Great Burgers in SM

Thanks. I've heard that about Lucky Devils -- I also here they have great milkshakes. Unfortunately, that would have to be a weekend trek for me. Traveling into Hollywood from the Westside on a weeknight is near impossible.

ISO Great Burgers in SM

I'm in search of outstanding hamburger spots (or restaurants with outstanding hamburgers) in Santa Monica. I already know about Father's Office and the Counter -- I'd like a few suggestions to places that won't require a long wait.

Saddlepeak Lodge or Morton's?

Two very different spots. Saddle Peak Lodge is a beautiful restaurant, both inside and out on the terrace. Think of a luxurious, old world hunting lodge, replete with roaring fireplaces and stuffed animals on the walls. It shouldn't be considered a typical steakhouse (a la Cut, Mastros, etc.), but they do have excellent meat (not only steak but game as well). Regarding Mortons, I'm not sure if you are referring to Arnie Mortons of Chicago or Mortons on Melrose. Arnie Mortons is a very good steakhouse, with a more typical steakhouse menu and ambiance (not nearly as interesting as Saddle Peak Lodge). Mortons on Melrose is a total Hollywood scene, better for celebrity watching than a romantic meal (although the food is great as well). If getting a great steak is of primary importance, I would also recommend Capo on Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica (not a steakhouse but some of the best beef (and food)around, although quite expensive) and Cut (Wolfgang Pucks latest in Beverly Hills)

mangosteen available in LA yet?

I just read in today's NYT that fresh mangosteens (from Puerto Rico) are scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles by FedEx this morning. Unfortunately, the article doesn't mention where in Los Angeles one can find the legendary fruit. They will be expensive to be sure (one store in Brooklyn is selling them for $10/piece). I hope someone can tell us where to find them.
