Recipes for cooking with coconut oil?
Thanks so much, everyone! And Angelsmom, those coconut muffins look OMG good.
Best Mexican Cuisine in Nassau County?
I second Caracara - have been there a few times and always like it. Besito is good too.
Recipes for cooking with coconut oil?
Hi CHowhounders. I am looking for recipes for cooking with coconut oil. In looking some up, I've found ones for cooking sweets/baking, but I'm more interested in entrees...and not fried food. I read an older string on the topic on CH which turned into a debate on the positive/negatives on using coconut oil, and please, let's not get into that...just recipes you've used and the food tastes good. Thanks CH'ers!
Restaurant Recommendations in Orlando
We will be visiting Disney and Universal for a long weekend and really don't want to do dinners in the parks. We've done so in the past and just want to have a better 'foodie' experience. Doesn't have to be fancy...just good food (not chain-like experience). We love seafood, italian, american. Chowhounders, can you help with some recommendations? Thanks.
dinner in SoHo?
GREAT suggestions, everyone. THanks so much! Plenty of great choices.
dinner in SoHo?
We'll be floating SoHo this weekend with relatives from out of town. Haven't eaten down there in a while and would very much appreciate suggestions of restaurants to eat dinner at. Moderate price range, casual. I thought about the L'Ecole, but see that they changed their menu and how they offer meals on Saturdays. I don't think we'd get reservations this late for Lupa. Thought about going to Lombardi's so they can have some NY pizza, but read some pretty bad reviews lately. Looking for any type of food except asian. Chowhounders, can you help me?
Fish in London?
Some great suggestions, everyone - thanks!! Can you recommend some italian restaurants too?
Fish in London?
We will be in London in a few months and welcome your recomendations for restaurants to go to for fish - not places to go for fried fish specifically, but places that offer good grilled options too. Thanks, Chowhounders!
Midtown, tourist thing: where to eat dinner that's not tourist trap?!?
Will be spending a Saturday with our niece/nephew who will be visiting from Philly, doing the tourist thing, looking at the lights, Rock Center tree (I shudder over that one only due to the crowds), dept. store lights. I never eat in midtown or the East side...tend to go to the EV, Chelsea, WV, and was wondering where to go that isn't a 'tourist trap'. Looking for a cozy place, any type of food except asian...don't want the uber-price places that would cater to the business lunch on an expense account. Chowhounders, any suggestions? If not, I can always get in a cab to my usual spots, but thought I'd tap into your great expertise...any midtown help? TIA
Creative Challenge 4 U
I don't eat oatmeal, but if I did, I'd use it for that in a hearbeat! Love the couscous suggestion...the cinn. buns one too, but I never bake. (I'm terrible at baking, but good at appetizers!) I'm more of a 'free-form' cook and baking is too much of a science for my personalilty. :-)
Creative Challenge 4 U
Hi Chowhounders. I'm always so impressed with the great cooks on the Home Cooking section. I can follow a recipe, but am not good in the ways of 'creating' something from scratch. The other day, I put raisens in hot water to plump them up. Actually I forgot they were soaking and they were in the water for about an hour. When I took them out (and used them in my recipe), I looked at the 'raisen water" it was nice and brown, and thought, there must be something I can do with that raisen water rather than throw it out. Any ideas, Chowhounder Cooks? I'm clueless....THANKS
What is one tip that you learned about cooking that was simple but made a huge difference? [old]
I love tarragon and will try this next time! I typically put my turkey stock fresh dill and fresh parsley...the more, the better.
Is Danny Meyer selling EMP?
Oh no! We have reservat8ions for the first time there in a couple of weeks. Should I keep it or will we be disappointed? Changed a reservation from Daniel to EMP to celebrate a significant event.
What is "American food"?
There are many answers to your question, 'what is American food:?'. Here are all my answers:
A Thanksgiving feast.
Traditional Southern cooking dishes
A traditional July 4th BBQ-ribs, hamburgers, hotdogs, watermelon, cobblers
Then all the ethnic and other geographical areas, for example, NY='s pizza, black and white cookies, bagels...Boston for baked beans...Philly for philly cheese steak....
You get the idea...
North Fork - Touch of Venice or Porto Bello
Thanks Coll. Good landmark, as we 've been to JH's but not gone past it.
North Fork - Touch of Venice or Porto Bello
Got it! Haven't been down that block. We go to Grana most Friday evenings which is right by Cliffs. Thanks...will try Bayview Inn.

ALLURE in Southold review in NYTimes
Same for us. The only restaurant of his that we loved was the first one in Roslyn...don't remember which "xxxfish" that was. We were sad when he closed it.
That time of year-US Open
Ok, the US Open starts this coming Monday. Will be going twice as the tournament is going on. Can you recommend places to go for dinner nearby? Any new places open in the past year? Don't want to go to Flushing for the tons of chinese restaruants...Astoria is ok...any places right by the stadium grounds? We like italian, mexican, greek,...please no asian food (we eat that too often as it is)...any price range, just looking for good food. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

We too were not impressed with Amano. Went once. Had the much raved about pizza...bleh. Doesn't even come close to Grana's. The rest of Amano's menu didn't impress us enough to go back. Again, it's another one of his places that is packed and will remain so.
We also went to Luce-Hawkins when Schudel owned it. It was a horrible experience. Cold soup served with a teaspoon. Waitress that acted like it was a diner, not an upscale restaurant. The plating of my entree that literally looked like someone upchucked on the plate. Never went back. ...until the current ownership (and have had good experiences). Again, we are done with Tom's places...they don't impress us with the food nor hype.
ALLURE in Southold review in NYTimes
We went a couple of weeks ago and were not impressed enough to go back. Our overall impression is that Schudel is getting too full of himself. The cerviche was way overpriced, and was not a true cerviche. It has white stuff all over it, like mayo or yogurt, and had a lot of lettuce filler and very little fish. The salad I had was just lettuce...not a tomato, not a cucumber, not an onion...just lettuce. They took their simply grilled fish off the menu. The drinks, local wines, were WAY overpriced. The fish I had was cooked well, but for $200 for 2 people, I'd much rather go to the North Fork Inn or Jamesport Manor. The place was packed, so no matter what my opinion is, the place will do well.
What should a New Yorker make sure to bring when moving to London?
I sent my brother 60 NY bagels for his big 6-0 birthday (he lives in Denver). He horded them.
