Need restaurant recommendations near Raleigh please!

As boring and mono-dimensional as it might be, The Angus Barn does beef beautifully and has a spectacular wine list. I also like Coquette in North Hills.

going to raleigh/durham for the first time

Vit Goal is a tofu soup joint near The Park off 54 / 55.

If you have time, the BLT's at the Merritt Mill in Chapel Hill are mind-bendingly good.

If you're here for the weekend, try to get to downtown Durham for the Durham Farmer's Market. There's a truck there called Only Burger. They do a breakfast burger with pimento cheese, fried green tomato and a fried egg over easy. All that and the burger. It sounds ridiculous but is ridiculously good.

The Pretzel dog at Neal's Deli in Carrboro is a singularity in the universe: a veal and pork dog, served in a pretzel roll, topped with melted cheese and stewed apples. Sounds crazy but it works. Expect lines out the door for the last two and people stacked ten deep for hours at the Only Burger truck.

Vit Goal Tofu Restaurant (Korean)- Durham

The place is brilliant. As long as you don't veer to far away from the place's DNA -- it's a Tofu joint after all -- you'll be just fine. I try to do it at least once a month if not more often. Really good stuff.

Best burger in Raleigh?

My wife and I split one, along with a warm spinach salad.

Places to go in Greensboro?

I drive from Raleigh to go to Beef Burger on Lee Street. That's an hour and and a half in each direction. It's one of the last two of the old Biff Burger chain from the 60s (the other is in Tampa). It's a bit of a dive, but don't let that fool you -- the burgers are amazing. Make sure you get the special "dipped" in their signature sauce. Just take it the way it comes and get lots of napkins because you'll need them.

It's a real soul food kind of joint that hasn't changed in the 40 years. The parking lot is always full of cops and cab drivers which is usually sign something good it going on. A gem.

Raleigh Meal Review - J Betski's - Terrific - will definately go back!

Went to Poole's last night and was extremely disappointed. Both entree items were over-salted and the service was -- to be polite -- lax. I don't think I'll be going back. I'd rather do Betski's or 18 Seaboard.

Southern Hot Dog Quest (SHDQ)

If you're going to have a dog in Burltown, you gotta go to Boston's, which is around the corner from Zack's. The chili is less greasy and their burgers -- all the way with chili, onions, mustard and slaw -- are exceptional. I make a point of driving an hour (from Raleigh) at least once a month.

And Don't forget the Roast Grill in Raleigh. I just snarfed three all the way on Saturday. And you gotta love the signage outside " HOT WEINERS".

When my buddy from Florida -- Dr. S -- comes to town, we go. Indeed, he's driving 500 miles this New Year's for two combos and a bottle Pepsi.
