Coming from Nationalist China where demonstrations are forbidden she was just overwhelmed with the idea that people in such numbers would be allowed to march in the street without being arrested.

That's true but I think it was certainly implied. Allen's is a great place to dine but I don't think it's considered somewhere to grab an inexpensive bite unless you've just won a lottery

"Rodney's Oyster Bar" might delight your fancy.at 469 King Street West (Back Patio).Always fresh as they get them from their own oyster beds. Stick to the fresh shucked oysters or clam chowders.

There are many threads here on best F&C but of late "High Street" gets the nod by far at least IMHO. However, it is not downtown. It's in North Toronto, Underhill Rd. (in the plaza) just north of Lawrence Ave East at Don Valley Prkwy exit. Definitely worth the trip!

OLD GOAT MEETS YOUNG LAMB
Met a Chinese nationalist, U of T exchange student here for 3 months enrolled in a law program. She was filming the anti war march for peace rally on Bloor St.E and was enthralled by the whole process of dissent. She took my flyer. We spent the afternoon at the Future's Bakery over drinks discussing politics etc. We have a dinner date next week and I want to take her somewhere unusual in the annex (she is renting a flat there) I don't want to spend a lot. She is smart, full of questions but not a really big eater. Somewhere unusual, "inexpensive" and quiet enough for conversation.
What can you recommend?

It is heavy on gimmick, novelty and decor and the young woman is described as a foodie sophisticate. I suppose I should be grateful that you didn't trash my "Black Camel" suggestion.as well. Two suggestions both in the downtown vicinity

"LA Marche" at BCE Place 42 Yonge St 416 366-8986 for a unique dining experience with great aesthetics for your daughter. Colourful, aroma filled space with serving stations that you visit, have your favourite foods prepared before your eyes and have your passport (bill) stamped. Touristy but definitely fun dining.

For a unique deli type experience I would recommend "

"The Black Camel" for an Angus beef "slow roasted" brisket sandwich with a variety of savoury toppings. I like the horseradish. Apparently, the owner says, it's a traditional ancient method of meat preparation from Europe.
Jump on the Yonge street subway and exit at Rosedale Stn. and follow your nose to
#4 Crescent Rd (Just outside the subway exit)

IS FAT FREE YOGURT, REALLY YOGURT
So Gio you're a pressed yogurt lover as well. Much less expensive than purchasing the labn-eh, eh? You are, very well informed by my observations so I'm pleased that I was able to pass on some useful information.
Here is a bit more. I would recommend that you consider natural yogurt over the fat reduced types. Michael Pollan brought the point to my attention at his recent lecture by questioning what exactly is in, 'fat free' yogurt.
I don't mean to pontificate of course. You will be the ultimate decision maker.

IN DEFENSE OF POLLAN
I apologize for not being familar with the writings of Schlosser and Sinclair, however, I am reading M.Pollan currently. Your categorization of him as a 'muckraker' might be more applcable if one was an owner of a large feedlot, a fast food chain or a world grain operation but speaking as a simple consumer I find his writing empowering. I am "inspired" and concerned at the same time about what basic ingredients are going in to my" great food and great flavors" as you say and I would think, you should feel the same.
In this era of corruption, misleading information, artificial ingredients, scientific manipulation, an epidemic of diabetes, and gigantic agricultural monopolies perhaps the writings of those aforementioned authors are, in fact, mandatory reading.

AND THE WINNER IS????
It will come as no surprise to anyone that one of dragonflygrl's suggestions was the decision of the OB of where to spend his food related Wednesday evening out.
The final selection was not a slam dunk , however, as I considered seeing a movie as that was a regular Wednesday wintertime activity for me. A quick scan of the movie reviews provided this short list of of possible food related cinema;
1)Caramel
2)Sweeny Todd
3)The Pirates that Don't
(A Veggietales movie)
4)DAIRY of the Dead
One by one they fell by the wayside
1-A subtitled movie about 5 women who meet in a hairdressing salon in Beirut
2-A movie where a woman makes meat pies from her lover's sartorial clients (Never been too fond of the musical genre)
3-A kids movie rated ** star only
4- A re-examine of the title revealed a typo. It was actually "DIARY" of the Dead

Considering I had the listings in front of me and prompted by positive memories about a play called "The Arab-Israeli Cookbook", that I had enjoyed at The Berkley St. Theater, some time back, where the actors actually cooked on stage for the entire show, I checked for live plays with a culinary theme. The effort proved fruitless and so I made the final choice of where to spend my evening off.
It would be dragonflygrl's.................. The Bier Market on Esplanade for the Taste of Iceland night. Being a blues, soul and jazz fan I was somewhat concerned about a night of Rock music, nevertheless, off into the night I went.
