They have a new shop - 6000 College Ave - Zoe. Had a toasted plain bagel this afternoon and it was great. Crisp chewy crust with chewy but soft interior.

Dean's Produce in Millbrae. I haven't tried it. As I recall it comes in a small wooden box. Located in the back of the store, right hand side.

Dungeness crab East Bay. Where???
$7.99 at Hapuku in Rockridge Market Hall. I saw one and it was almost 2 lb. Didn't get it.
Where to buy a pound of coffee?
ditto on JP's organic Fogbuster. I also liked the breakfast blend. I took a chance on the prepacked Pick of the Harvest - organic Vilcabamba and like that too. $7.99 for a whole pound - what a deal. As a point of reference I use to drink Berk Bowl's organic French roast but wanted a lighter cup so tried out these others. Oh, and 10+ years ago I was an avid Graffeo drinker - dark and a half/half blend.

miam.miam in rockridge? anybody tried it?
when I spoke with a guy working there, the flavored yogurts were not organic and didn't use the Strauss as a base. The only organic yogurt was the plain Strauss. They were moving towards making all the flavors organic but wanted to settle in first.
It irks me that they use nonfat yogurt - to me, the missing fat = not creamy.
I found the flavored yogurts to be too sweet and kind of watery. I liked the plain strauss and the peanut butter though. Honestly, I'd rather go down to Tara's and get a mini scoop of ice cream ;)
El Cerrito: Jac's Asian Bistro (9am-2am) – Oh my goodness (really!!!) … I finally 'get' Hong Kong-style coffee shops
He gave me a card with the new address: 10558 San Pablo Ave.
I look forward to the new spot - in much nicer surroundings.
El Cerrito: Jac's Asian Bistro (9am-2am) – Oh my goodness (really!!!) … I finally 'get' Hong Kong-style coffee shops
We went to Jac's for Friday night dinner. The place was half full, mostly chinese folks. Ordered bitter melon with cod, bok choy with garlic, vegetable chow fun and steamed rice . They brought out complimentary soup - wintermelon in a chicken broth flavored with a few bits of dried gizzard and pork. Portions were generous. Everything was fresh, well cooked, seasoned just right and had good 'wok hay' I was struck by how fresh all the veggies were and the generous garlic bits did not have that old oxidized garlic taste. My dining partner declared the chow fun the best she has ever had. Cheap too - $21 with leftovers for lunch. Over all, this place reminds me of solid old school chinese from my childhood. It was worth the drive from Oakland and we will be back. btw, they are moving a few blocks north to the old Baskin Robbins space in September.

Grand Opening - Ms Wally's Cafe (Emeryville/Oakland)
Went to Ms Wally's tonight. I had the lamb kebab with rice and lentil soup. The soup was perfectly spiced, a bit hot. The lamb was cooked perfectly (on a bed of sauteed red onion and a few diced tomatoes), nicely seasoned and had a great garlic sauce. The sauce brought me back to my LA days and Zankou chicken. That sauce was just like zankou's. Usually rice is just rice but this was very flavorful too. The lamb was a generous portion so I have a few pieces for my lunch tomorrow. Partner had the buckwheat crepe with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and olives. She enjoyed it and wants to go back and try a few of the other combos. Service was good and we will be back.

Drowning in fruit, looking for local canning suppliers; are vintage jars a no-no?
Here's a thread from the summer on where to find cheap canning jars - looks like Walmart won out.

Diestel Turkey Prices
Berkeley Bowl sells WIllie Bird and Mary's. They don't carry whole Diestels.
Close by to Market Hall is Verbrugge - can't remember the price. My brother reserved a few birds at Piedmont Grocer. $6.99 does seem high.
