Five Guys Burgers - Coming to Montreal !
They indeed are expanding,(Five Guys)
one is open in my hometown of Regina, Sask. I now live in St. Lazare, close to the Vaudreuil location. Great!
Does anyone make nitrate/nitrite free smoked meat in Montreal?
Maple Leaf, Natural Selection meats are in the process of revising their labelling after a CBC Marketplace investigation. They advertised their new, natural selections meats as being nitrite/nitrate free, but celery powder was one of the ingredients.
Madame Benoit's curried rice
Thank you so very much, Lotti, that's it! So great with chicken!
Madame Benoit's curried rice
Have lost my cookbook by Madame Benoit, "Encyclopedia of Canadian Cooking." I used to make a curried rice dish from that book. I remember it as being quite nice. Anyone have the recipe?
Rumors abound about the sale of Schwartz's
I heard a similar story through, "the grapevine", didn't pay much attention until I read your post, porker. The rumour I heard was that not necessarily franchises, but at least one more location has already been selected in Montreal. Will have to wait and see.
Grapenuts cereal in Montreal
I am from Saskatchewan, readily available there. Spotted it in Hawkesbury,(Ont.) too.
Haggis, tomorrow!
Suddenly it's Robbie Burns Day and Haggis is a top priority!
Where is the best in town? I do recall, Gryphon d'or having some glorious Haggis last year.
Sadly, it ran out quickly! Time the francophones learned to savour it!! Spread the joy!
Discount stores with food/grocery in Quebec?
I am sure that Polo is not joking around! Outside of Quebec, Shepherd's Pie is known But Pate "Chinois", never heard of it until I moved to Quebec. Racist, was my first reaction after hearing of the "so called origins." In Quebec, political correctness is pretty much non-existent, pity.
Saucisse de Morteau in montreal?
Please clarify in English! Never heard of, "saucisse de Morteau?"
Help tomorrow Galette des Rois!!
I can't believe I haven't had a response! Where to buy a Galette des Rois in Regina! Tomorrow is the big day! I am visiting in Regina, originally from here but now living in Montreal. I am sure there are a lot of good Catholic/Anglican folks in Regina who uphold the tradition. Help!
Layover Montreal
Oh for sure I know he is "vulgar" , I was just disappointed that it kind of(parts of it) cast Montreal in a bad light. The chefs came off looking not so much "vulgar" as just plain stupid. I guess in its defense, it wasn't meant as a tourist information video.
Layover Montreal
I thought it was very vulgar. Was going to recommend it to friends that will soon be visiting Montreal, glad I viewed it first! Very disappointing.
where to find JAPANESE mandarin oranges
I too am from the West and miss Japanese Mandarin, so much better than clementines. My daughter bought a box of Chinese Mandarins last week from PA on Parc and they were good.
Haskap Berries
Just heard about Haskap Berries. Not the season, but they sound amazing. Three times the antioxidants of blueberries. Apparently they are very similar in taste. Anyone seen them here? Grown in Alberta, Saskatchewan and I believe, New Brunswick.
Waiting to sit
I agree with SnackHappy, wow.just...wow. We were about to make a reservation for a birthday celebration at, Joe Beef. Not surprisingly, we have changed our minds!

Dinner vs Supper (moved from Quebec)
So it's finally clear...dinner is a more "low class" name for an evening meal. Supper is used in "upper classes"( "dinner" is a term reserved for a formal evening meal). An average evening family meal is supper. If you are having a formal evening "out" at a restaurant then it can be called dinner.
Also where I come from, the Canadian prairies, dinner often refers to the noon meal because this is when most farm families have a large meal. The farmers working out on the field need some hearty nourishment at noon, often they have been working on their fields since sunrise. By evening they are exhausted and just look for a light meal(supper) and early bedtime! I find that people in Ontario and the U.S. refer to dinner as the evening meal. Strange, I could never call supper, dinner.
Best Montreal Bistro for Dinner?
Not very impressed with L'Express. Was underwhelmed by the hangar steak. Tough, cold and no flavour. On the Prairies this would be called minute steak, very cheap and very tough. Here it seems trendy but it's just as bad! By dinner do you mean lunch? I am from the Prairies and "dinner", is the mid-day meal. Supper is the evening meal.

Just got 100 dollar Moxie's Restaurant gift card. Is this a good or a bad thing...?
Amazing deal !! Lucky for you. The food, ambiance is awesome. The steaks are to die for you, enjoy!
Pancake Day aka, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Tuesday March 8
Where will the best pancakes be served in Montreal on this special day?! I hear lots of "buzz" about it, but no mention of a definitive location.
Farro
Found farro at Latino grocers on St. Viateur. Staff were very confused when we asked for farro, didn't know they carried it and had not the slightest idea of what it was/is! We found it ourselves amongst their pasta. I presented it to them when we found it! This drew quite a crowd, the "chefs" in the front of the store, general staff and such, all intrigued! "We" made a wonderful salad with farro, roasted beets, walnuts, parsley, feta, and assorted other things, incredible. First time all of us had ever tasted farro.
I mostly sat by the fireplace while my daughter, son & girlfriend cooked.
Vietnamese Subs
Yuba! I was just actually doing a little research on truffle oil...sadly...nothing but chemicals!! Inadvertently I came across an article in NYTimes by, chef, Daniel Patterson, San Francisco, Restaurant, Coi. He has spent a lot of time in France, his mother/grandmother are French.
But..this led me to videos of his and one featuring, yuba,("skin" that forms on tofu) he used it as pasta, in what looked like an incredible dish. So, where can I find yuba in Montreal?
ISO: Fauchon Blend tea or equivalent
I bought some at Holt Renfrew, during Christmas holidays. Having just (relatively) recently moved to Montreal, I am surprised how popular tea is here! Didn't think frenchies drank much tea.
Southern Style Biscuits and Gravy
SourberryLilly, the fact that "we" are bilingual should imply that biscuit can be used! Biskit, is confusing for all of us! More importantly, has anyone tried the "biskit?"
canned anchovies
They should be in all of those places! Look in the fresh fish section. I know I have been fooled looking in the canned fish section. Also ask at the store. I have even bought them in a Dep!
ISO Natural / Organic / Grass Fed beef / pork in Montreal area.
I live in St. Lazare, very close to beautiful, Hudson, Quebec. There is a fine shop at 133 Main Road in Hudson. Natural meat from stress free animals, no hormones, no antibiotics. Even if you can't find what you want, just visiting Hudson, is worth the trip!
Meyer lemons
If anyone is looking for Meyer lemons, I picked up a bag of beauties from 5 Saisons, (a few days ago)1180 Bernard O.
