The Tres Leches's Profile

Philly Cheesesteaks in Austin

I've been to Phatso's and Way South Philly. They both use Amarosa's bread and both have the choice of provolone or Cheese Wiz.

That said, I've enjoyed Way South Philly more than Phatso's.

Stiles Switch charges $13 a pound for beef ribs. Pok-E-Joes charges $13 a pound for pork ribs. Franklin charges $14 a pound for pork ribs. John's prices are in line for Austin.

Live Crawfish finds and price check for 2012

In the past, I've purchased sacks of crawfish from HEB, Fiesta and Quality Seafood.

Quality Seafood has always been significantly more expensive, but I've never had any significant dead loss in one of their sacks. With Fiesta and HEB, I've occasionally had a sack with a lot of dead loss.

Looks like Estancia Churrascaria in Sunset Valley is closed. Sign is gone and a temporary banner said something like "Royal Indian Cuisine Coming Soon".

He's Baaack! Where have you seen Bourdain in town?

He was at JMueller BBQ this morning. He sat at the table I was eating at. A producer came by beforehand and told everyone at the table that they would likely be on in the background of the show, and for sake of the show's continuity, they had to stay at the table and be prepared to be there for 1.5 to 2 hours.

Bourdain arrived, stood in line with everyone else, and then sat down and ate while talking to some dude in a red "BBQ" shirt. All this while three cameras filmed his every bite.

Via313 for Detroit Style Pizza

I've been a couple of times. Really great pizza. It's a square, deep dish pizza but a really light crust, not heavy. It's airy like focaccia bread. The cheese goes all the way to the edge of the pan so theres a brown edge of crispy cheese. The sauce also goes on top of the cheese. They're baked in square pans that were also used as auto parts pans in auto plants.

Hard Hat Vol IX

Wow. Real, hand cut ice? After all these years drinking cocktails with ice cubes in it, I'm finally freed of this burden.

Gordon ruined El Greco. Can it be saved from the RIP thread?

Looks like the end may be near:

"El Greco is owned and run by Chef Jake Konstantinidis, who moved to Austin from New York City, along with his mother Athena.

Holbrook continues:

Jake is very controlling and degrading to work with [...] He doesn't come downstairs from his condo unless he has to, I don't know exactly whats going on up there, but I know it it isn't any good (wait till you see the episode of Kitchen Nightmares). I have seen him make waitstaff pay for walked tables out of there tips.Seen him flip out and threaten staff with kitchen utensils etc.

On the quality of the menu and his hopes for the restaurant after Gordon Ramsay's taping, Holbrook says:

The quality of the produce used is steadily going downhill. Every corner imaginable is being cut from Ramsay's new menu [...] I was hoping things would turn around, that I could help him get out of his "Restaurateurs Slump". El Greco was a waste for Kitchen Nightmares."

Eater Austin is reporting that the Belmont is closed as well.

best bakery for a birthday cake?

My wife got my last birthday cake from Cake Mix. It's a husband and wife team who are/were the pastry chefs at parkside and Uchi. It looked and tasted great.

Tino's Greek at The Triangle?

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Heartland-Denies-Responsibility-for-Breach-at-Austin-Restaurant-Chain-152318.shtml

"Hundreds of Austin residents have received calls from their respective credit card companies informing them that there's been a security breach which involves their cards. Many others have discovered fraudulent charges on their own.

Affected individuals have one thing in common, they were all customers of Tino's Greek Cafe restaurant chain in the past few weeks."

Tino's Greek at The Triangle?

Hundreds of Tino's customers had their credit cards skimmed and had charges run up on their credit and debit cards all over the country. I'd watch out before eating at that place.

Surprised nobody has weighed in on the news about Katz's

And this is the second time he's declared bankruptcy to get out of paying his debts and not paying wages owed to his employees.

Hard Hat Report Vol 5

An Alamo Drafthouse is opening at Mopac and Slaughter so it wouldn't be a surprise to see a Highball open next door to it.

RIP part III: Austin Restaurant Closings

Isn't this the second time they have declared bankruptcy to get out of paying their employees and their debts?

Know Your Enemy: Snappy Snacks Villainy Exposed by Local Media

The problem was that several years ago, the city decided to selectively enforce their mobile vendor guidelines against Ramsay, which he complied with at his expense. Now he has to compete against mobile vendors who don't follow the rules and he's complaining, which I don't fault him for.

This battle existed before the rise of the hip trailer community in Austin and the stationary trailers have gotten caught up in it.

Incidentally, if you look closely at some of the "hip" mobile vendors, you'll notice a little sign that says that the truck they are using is leased from Snappy Snacks.

Hard Hat Report Vol. 4

At the corner of South Lamar and Lightsey there's a Phil's Ice House/Amy's Ice Cream going up in the spot of a used car dealership. On the other side of the intersection, there's a place called Papalote Taqueria being built next to the Thundercloud Subs. It's owned by Azul Tequila.

Quality Seafood (South) / Softshell Crab Sandwich

I read that it will be located at South Lamar and Ben White. I know of a few empty restaurant locations in that area. There's the former Fish City Grill and El Rey spaces at Brodie Oaks and then there's the old Alligator Grill location.

Blackened Shrimp Po' Boy & Fried Pork Chops?

I lived in New Orleans for four years, right now my favorite po-boy place in Austin is Flying Falafel & Po-Boys next to the Dobie Center. It's owned by a Lebanese family that lived and owned a po-boy restaurant in New Orleans pre-Katrina.

They don't have a blackened shrimp po-boy but their roast beef po-boy is the most authentic version I've had in Austin since Gene's closed. They're seafood po-boys are also really good.

I don't like Cypress Grill, the muffaletta I had their recently had a bland olive relish and only a few slices of meat on it.

Alligator Grill on South Lamar has closed for good.

1063 Lıcensed Food Traılers ın Austın and I Ate at Each One

The pit at Franklin BBQ is the old pit from John Mueller's BBQ. Aaron has been refining his BBQ for years. I think it's the best BBQ in Austin. He's getting so much word of mouth that he said he may have to hire someone to help him out. I went there yesterday and it was a 20 minute wait at lunchtime.

R I P part II

Tried using a gift certificate to zpizza on 2nd street and the restaurant wasn't open. Anyone know if it's closed temporarily or permanently?

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant has closed.

Hard Hat Report Vol 3

There is a new Mandola's Italian Market being built in the South Austin Costco Strip Mall at William Cannon and Mopac.

Riverside, Pleasant Valley and Oltorf area; new restaurants? Taco Trucks?

I was at Smitty's a month ago. The shoulder clod is listed on their menu.

Local quail (semi boneless)

I was at Sprouts on Brodie Lane today. They had frozen quail, 6 for $8.99.

Oktoberfest Menus,Events,Food Parties...

I did Oktoberfest at the Bakehouse last year. Had the Wiener Schnitzel. It's like all the food there. It's OK, but not great. I got my $12 worth. The red cabbage is very sour and the warm German Potato salad was just OK.

If it gives you any indication, the Bakehouse was a finalist to be put on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares but did not get picked.

The Texas Cuban Pressed Sandwich Trailer

I asked the owner when I went last week. They said they were going to try and be set up to take credit cards in about a month.

I enjoyed the sandwich but it was very, very garlicky. Is that traditional?
