Upper Peninsula Road Trip
If anyone has places by Iron Mountain, I would love to hear them!
Wisconsin good stuff - Chicago to Oshkosh to Manitowoc?
Assuming the ferrry is actually running (right now they have issues, check on it!)
Lower than you wanted but Meisfields in Sheboygan is my favorite butcher shop. Many awesome brat flavors. Newton meats (below manitowic) has some awesome flavors, very good bacon, and my son's favorite beef patties (cheeseburger/bacon).
I HATE to mention my favorite cheese place, but Hennings in Keil. They have been discovered - every time I go there I see out of state plates. Breaks my heart.
Pine River cheese is close to Manitowic as well, Prices are not great, good selection, I have met many politicians there.
There is a contingent that loves Friar Tucks outside of EAA in Oshgosh. I do not understand this, but I have seen many posts about people who have come back to EAA that love them.
MKE - another board to check out.
LTHforum.com
I understand that it was part of Chowhound but there was a less than amicable split several years ago. I find more Milwaukee discussions there than here, covering more topics. There is an active group on there that includes an upcoming meetup at Ono kin grinz. Apparently arranging meetups like this was against the Chowhound rules at one time (or so I was told) that led to the split.
I have met a couple professional food writers from that group, arranged a Milwaukee tour of the northside hangouts of mine, etc.
I now watch both groups.

A link to an OnMilwaukee.com artilcle. About as good as you get from them (I am not a fan)

Milwaukee
If you go to the Kopps in Glendale, try not to park on the Kinko's side (south), try to park by the main road on the north side. There have been many car break-ins in the Kinko's and Cousins lots (just south of Kopps).
Anniv comming up - any chance of a decent onion loaf in the MKE area?
Thanks - I will look into them.
Another forum also suggested Jakes in Pewaukee, but I did not see the onion loaf on the on-line menu.

The Damon's in the Mequon is now an Office Depot, and a huge improvement. The one time I ate at the Damons in Mequon it was so bad that we were comped the dinner in hopes that I would not let others know about it. When your salad is brought out at the same time as the dessert, the ribs & steak were so overly cooked that they were inedible and were sent back twice..... i did call the corporate office the next day to let them know my displeasure. The former one in Brookfield wasn't that great for lunch either. A shame because I liked the Damons in Myrtle Beach (I drove past it twice a week for several years).

My better two thirds has been making noises of "needing" an onion loaf. Onions strings done in a loaf format that they are very dense and can be cut with a knife. My son and I would prefer not to run to her home in Versailles, KY (pronounced Ver-Sales). to make her happy. For those that remembered the awful Tony Romas in the area - nothing like what they did. very dense, but was close to the taste.
Roy Rogers - east of Cincy
Roy Rogers is one of the two chains I miss for fried chicken.
When I was by their place in Schaumburg, IL, I always had to bring back a large order for my mother. The other was Chicken Unlimited. They used to be a chain of about 300 stores, but the last I heard there are only a couple left in Florida.
Beer and Food Fest - Glendale, WI in June
The house is a mess, but I can always set up a few tents in the back yard! :)
It would be a long walk though - I'm by good hope & green bay.
There is a groupon today for wingfest Milwaukee - apr 15th at the HD museum
I have never been to a wingfest in Milwaukee -
A couple of other places, but now I do not eat as much as I used to so I avoid such things.

Go to Groupon for the ticket purchase ($45 for admission for two)
I won't be there since the kid isn't 21, but enjoy folks!
Ono Kine Grindz - hawaiian food in Tosa (MKE)
Someone posted about this place on another board, I wrote this in response after having lunch there today:
I had to pick up some passover things for a couple of elderly shut-ins that live by me at the Kosher Meat Club, and continued on to have lunch at Ono Kine Grinds today.
I was expecting to get a pork dish as it is what I expected from a hawaiian place - but they had just brought out some ribs and the plate passed under my nose as it was being brought out and it smelled GOOD. The ribs were done Korean style and were called "Angus Prime Beef Ribs". Very good, slightly saltier than I would have done myself. The Kim Chee was way too hot for me - but I am not a spicy food fan. The sticky rice was very good, the (Hawaiian Salsa? Salad?) was excellent. The macaroni salad was very bland.
Very friendly people. Very small place - I think there was seating for 20 at best and that would be crowded.
I am planning on going back, I am torn between the Kalua Pork or the Yellowfin Ahi Poke. I will be trying the Lomilomi lox the next time as well. The time after that will be the smoked chicken.
Prices are very reasonable (or were for the ribs - the most expensive thing on the menu and they were $9.95),

Oh - you also can get loud hawaiian shirts there as well.
Milwaukee
It might be too late, but sign up for the Palermo's Pizza tour which is within sight of Miller Park.

Manitowic, WI - you have to stop at Newton Meats
I am going to be going past next week due to a business trip. If you would like me to pick up anything from there or Meisfields, please let me know.
Did you ever work at a fast food restaurant? [moved from Food Media and News]
My senior year of HS I was the head "fry cook" at a Chicken Unlimited. The company I worked for the past couple of years went under. My mother until the day she died thought that they had the best chicken - I actually brought home coating for her to do her own several times. Mr. D let me bring home a 50# bag of the coating for her once. Now they are all Brown's Chicken (I think) except for a few in Florida which is all that remains of a 400 unit chain.
As the oldest employee outside of the owner and the great guy who in college and had worked there since he was 14 and was the accountant for the place, I had a ball. I got caught on break several times in the freezer with the rotating girlfriends, etc. The owner was a great guy who tolerated anything legal IF THE PLACE WAS CLEAN AND THE CUSTOMERS WERE HAPPY. If I ever pick up a franchise, 'Mr. D" is my goal to emulate.

One of the friendliest places I ever stopped at. While I expect that driving north you have stopped at Meisfields (http://www.miesfelds.com) for your main course of brats, these people have to be the dessert. I just did some of their "fruit and nut" brats and they were great. I grilled up some of their "hamburger with cheese and bacon" pattys and my son was begging me to go back for more (long trip, in the future). They have some very interesting brats, and to be honest I would not be trying some of them like "pumpkin".
The next cookout I plan on, I am driving to them and getting the bulk of brats at Meisfields, and an assortment from Newtons. (sorry Usinger's purists)
That and I was not having a good day and was not in a good mood when I went into Newtons. The two ladies there were so friendly, joking, etc. that I left in a far better mood.
MKE - Anyone do decent onion strings? My better two thirds was just complaining that she misses them
My better two thirds is from Ky, where apparently onion strings are a staple. Fried and cooked in a bread pan form. I have not been able to duplicate at home, she just mentioned that she misses them and is hinting on a trip back there.
The (*ahem*) proper way according to her is that the onion strings are done in a loaf form like what you would do a bread loaf in, so that you can either pull out the strings or cut a slice.
The following is a link to pictures that are something close but not exact.

Merquez sausage in Milwaukee
Lamb Brats? AWESOME!
Has anyone seen them outside of WFM? My kid's schedule (scouts/wrestling/tennis/german club/etc., etc., etc) will not let me get there.
Fresh Market Fox Point Wisconsin opening late april
I have been conversing with one of the openers in another food forum, the opening is going to be late April, not this month as the press release had stated last year.
Chinatown Kitchen--Jackson, WI
I often go past Jackson. Thanks - I will have to stop in and give them a try.
Merquez sausage in Milwaukee
You might try calling International Foods in Shorewood.
They seem to deal with a number of sausage vendors.
Suggestions around Iron Mountain, Mi?
Apparently I have been tagged to drop off three scouts at a camp in upstate Wisconsin. I will be visiting an old co-worker who retired to Iron Mountain just to fish and hunt. Any options? (outside of the fish and venison that are already planned for a cook out) ?
Milwaukee Recommendations
IMHO, not the Calderone Club on Port Washington in the 'burbs.
Champaign-Urbana dining in the 1970s
I discovered Garcia's in the early 80's when they expanded to Purdue.
There was also a pel-freeze fast food rabbit place that I enjoyed as well that had branches in both places. I'm sorry that they got out of the rabbit meat business and went into the medical drugs business.
Champaign-Urbana dining in the 1970s
I really miss Garcia's pizza. They were my second favorite pizza place of all time. Today I am told that they are nothing like they used to be. It started when they started using canned ingredients, then canned sauce, and now they even purchase the pizza dough.
free tasting at Dr. Dawgs this Sunday (19th) in Glendale, WI

Cheese Shops from Chicago to Lake Geneva, WI
Here is an article about a cheese factory opening up in Milwaukee - Maybe for your next trip.
http://onmilwaukee.com/dining/articles/clockshadowcreamery.html
If you get a chance to go further north in the future, these folks are my favorites:
http://www.henningscheese.com/index.html
They have been on food network in the past.
If you want to go further north on another trip, please post another request.
I'm sure the board has lots of favorites. (as well as sausage/brat outlets, etc).
Cheese Shops from Chicago to Lake Geneva, WI
Instead of Mars, go to Woodmans. Far cheaper prices. If you go to Sendiks in Brookfield, also make the time to go to Brennans for a great cheese selection.
