What Did/Does Your Dad Cook Best?

My mom died when I was 1 1/2 years old and didn't remarry until I was 10 years old. My memories of my dad is him cooking for my sister and I every night when he came home from work. Sometimes when he was really tired he would make crepes which my sister and I loved. His best dish was Italian gravy, learned from the Italian neighbors even though he was born in Germany. Let it simmer all day & then the home made meatballs, I can taste them now. I guess that's where I got my love for cooking, which I do 3 or 4 times a week to give the wife a break.

What Foods Do You Forego in the Name o' Domestic Tranquility?

Headcheese & blood wurst - she can't stand either one.
Me, I love both of them!

"Bar S Beef Franks": has anyone tried them?

They are a very very poor excuse for a hot dog!

Classic New York Dishes [moved from Manhattan]

Or a sausage, egg & potato hero.

Brilliant ideas for a whole head of red cabbage?

Also add thinly sliced onions and red wine vinegar. Delicious!!!

Seeking destination restaurant in Southern Vermont

CindyJ, which restaurant are you talking about? The Prince & The Pauper or The Hermitage? On 10/16/11 you posted you were going to the Hermitage.

Mt. Snow Area Dinner Recs

Well there's the 1846 House @the West Dover Inn, Fiddleheads on RT 100, and our favorite, The RoadHouse on Rt100 in Wilmington. If you go there on Thursdays, they have a happy hour starting at 4:00PM ( 1/2 price drinks) and their regular menu is also 1/2 price on Thursdays. It includes soup or salad, bread, entre and dessert. As I said, it's our favorite palce to eat in the Valley.
We are year round residents.

Hermitage Inn, West dover

The Sawmill hadn't been listed in Chateaux and Relais for at least 5 or 6 years. It was sold in December 2010 and they opened Nonna's. They seem to be attracting a following as it has been busy there the last several weeks.
I agree with you on Peter Haven's. I don't particularly care for TJ Buckley's but that's a personal preference.

The Inn at The Sawmill Farm has changed hands and now they are advertising Italian cuisine. We haven't tried it yet but I'd wait a while until they get the kinks out.

Hermitage Inn, West dover

As you know the Hermitage is expensive. There are other restaurants in town, The Roadhouse, The White House, The Anchor and a brew pub. My favorite is the Roadhouse on Rt 100 North.

50th Anniversary in BRATTLEBORO

In Brattleboro there is nothing "better" than Peter Haven's which is an excellent restuarant.
As for an "typical" VT inn, not in Brattleboro per se you would have to travel as short distance. There is the Chesterfield Inn in NH and up in Newfane the Four Columns Inn.

Blue Benn in Bennington - never again

They've been going downhill over the last several years. Living off their former reputation.

where to eat near mt snow

The Roadhouse on Rt 100 in Wilmington is very good. Also a newly renovated place called the Last Chair just opened on Rt 100 in West Dover (used to be Deacon's Den). Valley View Saloon in the Mt. Snow Marketplace as you come into West Dover is also good.

Brattleboro nice vibe

Have you tried Peter Haven's? Excellent food. It's on Eliott Street.

Braised red cabbage- can I freeze it?

Definitely, I do it all the time.

Food Scars - Things you will never eat again.

A long time ago (50+ yrs) my aunt made me eat hot sliced beets which I had never eaten before. To this day I cannot put a beet in my mouth.
The other thing I haven't eaten in over 40 plus years is rice pudding. I had my appendix removed and while in the hospital, all they gave me for 4 days was rice pudding. Ugh!!

Starting to think of fall VT roadtrip...need some more ideas

I think you mean "Top of the Hill Grille" and you are right. The food there is great!

Keene, NH vs. Brattleboro, VT: How would food scene factor in to moving decision?

No, I don't think so. Keene has so many more stores than Brattleboro will ever dream of having. Have you been to either town recently?

Keene, NH vs. Brattleboro, VT: How would food scene factor in to moving decision?

True, but Keene is more of a college town than Brattleboro will ever be. The restaurant scene is probably equal in either town.
Most Vermonters will be found shopping in Keene on the weekends because of the variety of stores available there.
