Expansive (and Expensive?) Views: Wolfgang Puck forays into Downtown L.A. with WP24 [LONG REVIEW]

oh boy. Yeah I have to go here soon and have had some of my worst meals at Puck restaurants, especially Chinois on Main. No subtlety at all, and an insult to Asian cooking in every way. I guess I will eat before I go to WP24?

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

shaanxi is a great place. Hope it stays that way.

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

yes, sorry. I keep making this linguistic error.

Ramen Jinya opening on Sawtelle?

yes i think so

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

I thought shanxi was knife cut. I can't figure out who has true hand cut

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

so, if you don't mind me asking, what's the best place to go for hand-pulled noodles for someone who isn't crazy about pork? I prefer Alhambra or west (not Hacienda Heights).

Alternative to Sushi Zo - warmer atmosphere?

mixed results at Hump. Don't weep.

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

any updates on this place? Have a taste for hand-pulled...

Alternative to Sushi Zo - warmer atmosphere?

I agree 100%, so will stop there.

BricoLa: Yet Another Montana Avenue Place to Avoid

Joe's in Santa Monica, or Milo and Olive. Mother Dough. Casa Bianca. Abbot is fine, once in a while, on Abbot Kinney.

LA's Best Ramen?

Enjoyed the tsukumen at Miyata Menji immensely.

Shunji's on a Monday nite? bad idea? or ok idea?

I have had unreal fish at Zo and Mori on mondays

LA's Best Ramen?

Chabuya is noticeably not very good, and there's more places to come on Sawtelle. Perhaps they'll step it up a bit.
Same with Taiko. Westside needs great soba badly.

Izakaya a step above - The fantastic cuisine of Morinoya [REVIEW + PHOTOS]

I'm curious to hear more reports too. The two times I went to Place Yuu (also in 2010) I found
it totally mediocre.

BricoLa: Yet Another Montana Avenue Place to Avoid

Called in first, checking to see whether the new Santa Monica pizza spot is the real deal. You'd think it would be, given Joe's or Milo and Olive.
Do you have wood oven pizzas?
We have the best pizzas outside of Italy.
Really?
Yes. Incredible salads, pastas. Best.
But what about the oven.
Our pizza is the greatest and
blah blah blah.

I wasn't falling for the shtick but we needed a quick slice
and thought to try. What a waste of time.
Easily the worst plain pizza in L.A. Their
blue cheese pizza was edible, sort of.
There is no reason to go here, unless you
like arrogance, disorganized service, loud music.

$3.75 per slice??? And the smallest slice this side of the Pacific. Truly,
how stupid (and rich) do they think we are?

What on earth is wrong with Montana avenue???? Cursed culinary destination.
But this is a new low.

800 degrees --what's with the lettuce stems?

so I guess they shouldn't wash the greens.

I have only ordered pizza and swear it is the most inconsistent place in town. That's what happens when you hire tons of people who could care less about pizza and have them making you their first pizzas, instead of actually training them first.

Horrendous.

PERFECT SUSHI West Los Angeles SUSHIZO

I find Masu sushi hit or miss. And somehow their shrimp tempura has been disgusting the times I forgot not to order it. That turned me off the place.

800 degrees --what's with the lettuce stems?

funny, yes, agreed. Or to Delfina in San Fran.

Miyata Menji on Sawtelle

I went to the original location in Japan. Miyati is way better than Asahi.

800 degrees --what's with the lettuce stems?

no big surprise. The people who work there could care less, it seems. I so much wanted to like this place but after a few visits I realized they were simply hiring people without training them. They would have a person learning how to make a pie making pies and then serving them. HORRENDOUS. No consistency whatsoever.

PERFECT SUSHI West Los Angeles SUSHIZO

i wasn't crazy about my meal at n/naka even though I wanted to be. Nothing stood out as outstanding, the timing was terribly slow.
Will stick to Zo.

Sushi In OC: Found! Kasen.

I agree about Kasen, and have been going there for years, though far from me, and only when in the area.

Looking for whole Katsuo to shave to make dashi

enjoyed your blog. I also love those Montreal bagels too much.

Fingers crossed that they can send the flakes. Fairmount sent me bagels.

What's THE BEST Cast Iron Pan?

Helpful, Politeness. Would you say that cooking in those Nambu region vessels is any different from the cast iron pods such as Lodge? A local seller has some beautiful cast iron pans from Japan but in terms of functionality I wonder if they are any better.

Upscale Lebanese Restaurant for a Business Dinner?

Thank you. I think I'll go with Semirami then.

Upscale Lebanese Restaurant for a Business Dinner?

How is it better? Fresher ingredients? I'm picking one to go to soon.

I realize one is Persian, other Lebanese. But am curious about the details of cleanliness.

Tavern- Brentwood - Update

And probably the worst service I've ever had in my life. The kind where it takes 45 minutes to get the bill and pay, etc., on top of being ignored and being brought the wrong food, then cold food, etc.

Granted, I like the tree in back.

Best pizza west of the 405?

I'd stick to their basic ny slice. The mozzarella you ordered is exactly as you describe it.

Tavern- Brentwood - Update

How do I dislike it, let me count the ways, starting with the service and leading to the prices, for what you get.

NY Style Chinese food in LA?

anyone tried the following: someone suggested we go there for this type of food, take-out.

Mandarin Chinese Food & Sushi on Pico
