My husband proposed to me over a dinner he made himself- can' t remember the meal except that it was reeeaally garlic-y.
But we announced our engagement to our parents at Rivoli in Berkeley which was perfect. Food is consistently good and atmosphere is comfortable and elegant. And the younger ones in your group will love the wildlife outside. Ask to be seated near the rear window outside.

Thank you everyone. These are all great suggestions. I think we are going to try to stay San Diego proper. I think my dad wants a place really special (so probably not super kid friendly but we'll eat early) Looking at Oceanaire. McCormick and Scmick still our fall-back unless y'all have dire warnings. In any case I'll try to report back. Dinner is in mid-march.

okay, that title sums it up. Will be in San Diego for Mom's 75th birthday. Looking for a festive restaurant to celbrate with 6 adults and 3 kids under 8. And Lobster is her favorite food so we're looking mostly at seafood places. Assume they can special order if not on the regular menu.
Any ideas? Cafe Pacifica looked fun but can't find recent reviews and I understand that they changed management very recently. McCormick and Schmick fits the bill but possibly too corporate?

so how is the Martha Stewart Dutch oven?
I received one as a gift and it seems like a nice adjunct to my trusty Le Creuset 7 1/4quart one as its a bit smaller. Seems heavy and sturdy. Will it hold up as well? Any heating ideosyncracies?

We went to Acquerello on my 45th birthday. Really lovely, romantic but not stuffy- pre-fixe menu.
In North Beach proper is Da Flora. Haven't been but a chowhound search will yield many responses

Mi Pueblo was what I was thinking of as well. They usually have several guisados, moles etc.
And they make their own tortillas
And I love the cactus salad
And fresh epazote in the produce aisle..

Husband, 15month old baby and I ate outside at Taco Grill in Oakland and of course had dessert at Cinqo de Mayo afterwards. It's a fairly urban setting but very pleasant facing a semi enclosed courtyard. Lots of kids (including our own) running around.
Weather was too warm for Pozole but perfect for Ice cream.
I don't know how to link addresses- both places are at the newish Fruitvale Public Market.

They had coconut.. and not sure if they were truly Kosher for Passover (and was reasonably confident that Mr Dude w/attitude helping me wouldn't know..) they probably weren't.. but since no flour, close enough for my practices.

I bought a 4 (5?) pack at Safeway (College and Telegraph) for the amazing price of $3.99! It was the Yehuda brand- don't remember if organic or not.. do they make a non-organic version? Anyway, a fabulous deal!
Seafood Recs in East Bay
Yes!! The onion rings (more acurately onion strings) We had as well.. and loved. Lucky for us the waiter originally forgot to place the order so they were specially ordered and delivered hot-from-the-frier for us.

We recently had a very nice dinner at Maritime East in Berkeley (coming from 80 you would take the Ashby exit up to Telegraph and make a left) Seafood entrees are 20-25- a bit more than you are requesting.
A fantastic side dish that we had was grilled favabeans. They were very young, stringbean size and grilled intact. You eat them shells and all. They were topped with just a bit of crumbled tangy (mild feta?) cheese.

Diana, I think you asked a reasonable question and are getting some crazy replies. Two thoughts I had were:
Alamo Square Seafood Grill- meets your fish request better than your salad one but they do have a nicoise salad and a spinich salad
Park Chow or Chow in the Castro- has nice dinner salads, one special seafood option. Casual but fine

Question about Mi Pueblo in Oakland...
Will be having family over this Saturday for our little guy's first birthday. Obviously no time to cook so wanted to put out a spread from Mi Pueblo in Oakland. Can hardly wait to go!
I see on their website that they open at 6am. If I get there then will they have their prepared foods such as grilled meats, carnitas, stews, salsa, tortillas etc out or are those usually put out closer to lunchtime. Of course I will give the store a call to find out but thought an early-bird chowhound may have personal knowledge
