ISO Best Burrito in PHX compared to NYC...read on

amen, brother! nyc is great for many things, but mexican food is not one of them. we have filiberto's, los favoritos, amados, los betos, super burrito, and so on. nyc has chipotle and taco bell.

let's get one thing straight. there are no good burritos in nyc, period.

weekend in la jolla

it is at the arizona-california border, and it is about halfway between San diego and phoenix. it is supposedly known for its mexican food. and i was hoping to find out tonight!

yuma for one night

i think we might try the taco truck at el toro meat market on 8th. based on what i've read, that seems to be the closest to 4th ave, which is where the best bestern is. and it seems like they have al pastor. does that sound about right?

is there a yuma taco truck map?

weekend in la jolla

thanks foodiechick for the warning! btw, any relation to beach chick? jk. yeah, an hour wait and not taking reservations is definitely going to make it difficult to hit cottage.

as for sab-e-lee, i think it is a strong possibility on the way in or out of LJ, since it does not seem too far out of the way. my mom (who was born in thailand) will be with us, so there may be some extra incentive to try it out.

weekend in la jolla

hey folks, i appreciate the passion shown in this exchange. trust me, i have near religous beliefs myself when it comes to certain foods and where to get them. i mean, that is why we are all here, right? now, i am not ruling out kaito but the location of zenbu is definitely a factor in its favor. keep in mind that we are coming from the phoenix area, so anything in la jolla should be great in comparison!

and what is wrong with trendy rolls??? as long as the fish is fresh, then i think a little creativity can be fun...

anyways, thanks for all the feedback. much better than the response (or lack thereof) i am getting in my yuma post on southwest. asked for taco suggestions, and so far only crickets...

thanks beach chick! i will definitely add zenbu to my list. sushi rolls there look good, and it is near our hotel, on the same street actually! bahia don bravo sounds great too. lobster burritos and fish tacos, yum! and spice and rice may be an option if we do not make it to sab-e-lee.

just looked at the breakfast menu for the cottage. wow! we might have to squeeze that in too! we don't have enough time!

weekend in la jolla

longtime c-hound visiting la jolla this weekend with the family looking for a few suggestions. the only places on my must-do list so far are el pescador fish market and possibly sab-e-lee on the way in, if it is not too far out of the way. found both places here and yoso. as with most hounds, we love authentic thai and mexican. well, pretty much love everything that tastes good. would definitely like to squeeze in some fish tacos and sushi while we are there. any good sushi recs? sushi on the rock seems like a possibility. btw, we are staying at the best western a couple blocks from la jolla cove. so places within walking distance would be nice. not opposed to driving, but since we have a toddler, it would have to be really really good.

btw, planning to stay tomorrow night in yuma on the way to LJ. i am posting a link to my yuma post on southwest since that board does not get nearly as much action is this one! was hoping to take part in the great yuma taco experience that everyone is talking about!

yuma for one night

we are stopping in yuma tomorrow night on the way from phoenix to san diego and probably stay at the best western on 4th ave. now, my original plan was to hit manjares de pepe after reading the awesome posts by ed on mm yoso and others here. but then i found out they close at 9pm, so we would probably not make it there in time. then i read about tacos mi ranchito right across the street from the best western but found out they also close around 9-930pm. so i am thinking our best best would be to hit the taco trucks on 8th street, which i assume would be open late. we will have a toddler, so alot will depend on her mood and sleepiness; so that is obviously one big factor. therefore, my big question to you all is this:

if you had to go to one taco place in yuma, where would it be?

ps => i should mention that i am a huge al pastor fan and especially if it is being sliced off the stick. i cannot seem to find such a place in the phoenix/east valley area. so that would be a big bonus to see al pastor meat spinning around on a stick with a pineapple on top!

Best Carne Asada Burrito in Arizona?

tucson is not really on the way from sedona to phoenix/scottsdale. but if you check this whole thread, you should be able to find a good burrito without leaving the phoenix metro area.

Best Carne Asada Burrito in Arizona?

funny that you mention guero de canelo because we were just in tucson went to the segundo location on oracle last friday. i got the medium carne asada burrito with beans and cabbage, except they forgot the cabbage. i would have to say it is good, but not great. btw, their chicken is horrible! does not even look or taste like real chicken (but hey this is a steak thread...)

as for our area in the east valley, filiberto's is still the best i've had (with los favoritos a close second). i just wish their guacamole was better. it is too liquidy and not chunky enough, what the dilly?

wow, this thread really does have legs!

Gelato!! (Tempe)

you forgot about the best place of all, Gelato 64, on the northeast corner of elliot and dobson (same strip as lee lee's). their coconut is awesome, much better than angel sweet's.

PHX hound visiting Santa Monica

thanks for the many great suggestions, folks! brunch at getty is an interesting idea i hadn't considered. tacos por favor sounds awesome, as do the taco trucks. and yes, i have seen the tacohunt blog in my research. great pics and very thorough reviews.

kiriko sounds good. how does that compare to hide sushi? which i also found on this board.

and what about thai town? is there a consensus t-town fav on this board?

Abbot Kinney Blvd does seem very cool. i'll add that to my list along with venice beach, of course.

thanks again to yogachik, cchow and licketysplit for the great recs.

PHX hound visiting Santa Monica

my wife and i will be visiting santa monica for easter weekend and are looking for a few good recs. we are staying at the ocean lodge, located 1/2 block south of the pier, across the street from the loews hotel. we have a car and some friends in thai town, so we are definitely willing to travel for great food. although we will probably have a fair share of meals in the santa monica/venice area. as any hound would, i do have a specific chow agenda. however, due to my unfamiliarity with the area, i have not picked out any specific places yet. my three main chow goals are:

authentic thai from thai town
al pastor from a taqueria (mexican)
killer sushi (japanese)

and if there's time:

soon doo boo (korean)
pho (vietnamese)
doner kebab (turkish)
dim sum (chinatown)
kalua pork (hawaiian)

an easter brunch rec would be great too! i know i'm asking a lot here, but i do promise to come back with a full report. thanks, LA hounds. as you can probably tell, thai and mexican are my favorite cuisines, so LA is the perfect town for me!

btw, some non-food goals of the trip:

roller blading the santa monica path
the getty center
la brea tar pits

La Guadalupana for tamles

Can somebody please tell me the current address and phone number of La Guadalupana. I am sending my mom there to buy me some tamales, but i have found at least 3 different addresses and phone numbers, including one here on chowhound at 26th, but that post is dated 2004. chicago.com has a different address and phone number, and furthermore, senortamale has a different number and different address on 37th. what the dilly?

thanksgiving buffets in maui

thanks for the info, torta. what about the sheraton maui resort. i checked their thanksgiving buffet menu online and it looked pretty good. and its close to where we'll be in kaanapali. have you tried their food?

thanksgiving buffets in maui

my wife and i are leaving in a couple days for maui and i was thinking of doing a good thanksgiving buffet on thursday. does anyone have any suggestions? we'll be staying at the mahana in kaanapali, but we'll have a car. i looked at the sheraton menu and that looked great. the grand wailea and westin also looked good. does anyone have any firsthand experience with any of these? or have any better recommendations? i also thought about the feast at lele but that is way too expensive, and based on the reviews here, not worth it. btw, we are not tied to having turkey, just interested in having good food. and if there is poke on the menu, that's always a plus!

Nikia Mediterranean Market - Chandler

there are a couple little tables in the corner, but it is primarily a takeout deli.

Neighborhood Italian - Chandler/Tempe/Ahwatukee

If it's not too late, I would like to recommend Vincitorio's on the SE corner of Elliot and Mcclintock, near Tempe Cinemas. They make great homemade pasta and charge very reasonable prices. And they even have live entertainment on friday and saturday nights. So you can take in a cheap movie and dinner, all in one spot.

Nikia Mediterranean Market - Chandler

I went to nikia recently and got the classic sandwich, which is the first one on the menu. It had fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, roasted red peppers, olive oil, and balsamic on a hard roll. The sandwich was very good, but I too believe that $9 is a bit steep for a sandwich. They did give me some kalamata olives, as well, which were great.
