Breaux Bridge - short trip
Hmmm...hard to pinpoint. I was born and reared in New Orleans and went to college in Lafayette. I then went back to NO and moved to Houston where I stayed for 15 years. In deciding where to go when I wanted to come home, I had already "done" NO, and it got down to Lafayette or Mobile, AL...both only a couple of hours outside NO. Since I'm in the oilfield, I decided on Lafayette. No, the town is not one of your top 10 for scenery, unless you're on the Azalea Trail when all the azaleas are in bloom or near the church where the purportedly largest live oak in Louisiana is, but the people here are unlike anywhere else. Not just Lafayette but the surrounding areas as well. Charming, a lot of French speaking, welcoming people. You could find yourself having dinner with the guy who mows your lawn and his family and feel like a part of them. There are festivals almost every weekend around festival time, rice, frog, crawfish, Festival International, Festival Acadiene et Creole, downtown Alive, movies in the park, anything we can think of to celebrate. It's just a different way of life and a different way of looking at things. I get my NO fix as often as I need it.
Breaux Bridge - short trip
I think Best Stop's best years are behind them sad to say. I now go to the new Hebert's on the service road at the same exit. I prefer their gratons and their stuffed chickens. They even have little tables inside and out so you can sit and eat while passing through.
Breaux Bridge - short trip
Thanks Celeste!!!, I'm certainly going to try that. I miss my "real" french bread horribly. And yep, if it's stale as hell within 30 hours, that's what I want! I'll hit Jeanerette and scoot over to Delcambre and pick up some shrimp tomorrow, it's supposed to be gorgeous and I love my little forays into the country.
Breaux Bridge - short trip
The food may be lacking but the people certainly are not!! Your best bet for good food is to have it with the people who cook it and serve it up at home. It just don't get no friendlier. Besides, you can leave work and be in NO before cocktail hour is up.
Breaux Bridge - short trip
Welcome to my world. Being in the midst of Acadiana one would think the food would simply blow you away...one would be wrong. Des Amis is OK...nothing more. Crawfish Town is simply another crawfish place. Landry's I wouldn't know as I wouldn't go there if they were the ONLY place in town. Old Tyme is as good as it gets for a po-boy....which really ain't that great. Bizbanos pizza (just around the corner on JOhnston) has better bread and really good pizza. Forget Pouparts or any other place in town as far as "real" French bread however....it doesn't exist.
Did have some boiled crawfish and shrimp the other night at Dwight's on Johnston. Two pounds of crawfish and one of shrimp for $26...guess they saw me coming. Cooked beautifully however. Charbroiled oysters were terrible....thick, thick, white cheese over the top of little bitty oysters which got lost in the mush.
Boiling Point in New Iberia was a disappointment last time there, I would not go to Prejean's at gun point, Best Stop was simply disgusting last visit and I wouldn't purchase anything from them in a sealed tight container much less anything sitting out. So I come home to New Orleans at least once a month to get some good food. Sad.
Turtle Soup outside of NOLA
Have not yet tried Jolie's..... I understand it is run by the same group as the Blue Dog, which I personally think stinks, but just may have to give them a shot. Some like the turtle soup at Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge. I found it too spicy...yes spicy, don't know where they got that idea.
No holds barred dinner for 80?
Yep, have done private parties at both Ralph's http://www.ralphsonthepark.com/, can't beat the area, ambiance and Commander's and both were wonderful....which is odd because I'm not a really big fan of Commander's...for dinner anyway.
Where would you take Angela Lansbury for tea?
Tea at Windsor Court is charming....she'd love it.....beautiful atmosphere. And for lunch I'd do Bon Ton Cafe (week days only).
soft shell crab poboy
Have not personally had one myself yet but heard that Stanley (at Jackson Square) does an unbelievable one. Not cheap, like $14 but worth every bite.
My Trip to NO--long with reviews
...and God's in his heaven and all's right with the world. Glad you made out all around!
Need help replicating two Copeland's Recipes
YIKES!!! I sure hope they do seafood better than they do Mexican.
Hookah Cafe- another good experience there
Funny you mentioned this...I was just speaking with a gentlemen who had a Reveillon dinner there and couldn't say enough good about it. But you're right....I would not automatically think of it.
borden's soda fountain, lafayette
Yep, it's still here. Was here when I was in college in '74 and still has the same woman working there...I think she's been there over 50 years. Jefferson and Johnston. Worth a stop? not if you're looking for crawfish but if you want a nice little resipte from a trip and you want a good malt or banana split, certainly.
Asian in Acadiana?
HC is correct...no real Vietnamese here. We do have Mae Son Noodle House, which is a combination of Asian and not too too bad when I need a fix, but no real Viet food. All the Chinese places are buffets (I won't eat off of anything that has to have a sneeze guard) and they are all pretty nasty. Stay on I-10 until you hit Lake Charles if you're looking for Vietnamese.
Great food...with a vegetarian
They may not list them as an entree but look at the salads, the soups, the amuse and ask them to please serve a dinner portion. Hell, even being a serious carnivore I could certainly enjoy some of these at the restaurants you mentioned above: ARUGULA WITH ROASTED BEETS AND BURRATA CHEESE or OLIVE OIL SEARED GNOCCHI WITH LEMON, PARMESAN AND TOMATOES or FRIED EGGPLANT WITH TOMATO CONFIT (Herbsaint); House Salad with Tomato, Feta Cheese, Spiced Pecans, Croutons, Vidalia Onion, & Cane Vinegar Dressing (Brigtsen's); truffled parmigiano reggiano risotto (Cuvee); Caribbean pumpkin curry soup with coconut or Greek chopped salad with hummus, cucumbers, pepperoncini, grape tomatoes, chickpeas, feta and crispy pita (Bayona)....I think you get the picture.
Great food...with a vegetarian
Everybody and his brother are vegetarian these days...if not, they're vegan. Which is fine, more meat for me....but why does everyone (not pinpointing you specifically) think that a restaurant that does something like a Revillion menu can't come up with a dish with no meat? They may not be advertising a "Meatless Entree" (and why should they?) but I have no doubt they could create one in minutes. A phone call to the place that the carnivores choose would certainly take care of that.
Can't wait to come back!
I have no problem imposing my personal choices on others....if you can't dress up a little to go out to a nice restaurant, then stay home.
Cafe Adelaide "fast break", NOT
"It took 15 minutes to get a menu."...should have been your first clue. I realize you had already valet parked but after 5 minutes I would have been gone.
CRAWDAD SEASON & WHERE for LARGE QUANTITIES
First of all, you're not going to get anywhere calling them crawdads, they are $17.89/pound as soon as you call them crawdads. They're crawfish and I'm afraid you'll be out of luck in October. You'll have to come back again in March.
Babineaux in Cajun Country?
There is a Babineaux's slaughter house near here in Breaux Bridge. They also sell their fresh meat, boudin, cracklins, etc.....I think it's even on Babineaux Road. Only one I have ever heard of.
recs for Friday lunch
End of August should be fine. You can pretty much get raw oysters year round now. The "R" month thing began, I think, before refrigeration in New Orleans to avoid the health risks. They are not as good (fat and salty) but you'll get a taste. They have a wonderful side salad and their crabmeat au gratin is fabulous.
recs for Friday lunch
I'll second that!!! Get there around 11:00 though. Fun atmosphere on Friday, lots of drinking going on (not to excess) and the food is wonderful....so are the waitresses.
Best Brunch or Lunch Saturday and Sunday?
Allow me to qualify....not many places open for lunch OUTSIDE the Quarter. And I worked at a hotel too long to enjoy have a lunch at one.
Best Brunch or Lunch Saturday and Sunday?
I would have to agree with Mr. Hunt....I just love Ralph's for lunch/brunch. You can't beat the scenery, the decor, the service..and the food is pretty good. But it's tough finding a place for a good brunch in New Orleans (believe it or not). We try to take Mom out for her birthday on Saturday when the kids can all get in town and you would be surprised how many places are closed on Saturday...for lunch anyway.
And just as an FYI, I much prefer Commander's for lunch/brunch than for dinner...in the Garden Room preferably. Why not change to Commander's for lunch/brunch and pick another place for dinner Saturday? You'd do much better somewhere else than Commanders for dinner.
New Orleans Ice Cream Company
Glad you liked the CCC Jeeves!!! I don't know that I have ever had ANYONE's CCC ice cream. Will have to give it a shot. Can't wait until it gets to the Lafayette area!! And I don't mind the Praline Crunch tasting like butter pecan...I love both!
New Orleans Ice Cream Company
From what I gather, I think they knew they had some problems with the Creole Cream Cheese...try it again. I love their Coffee Ice Cream. And sorry Randy but I'm always skeptical about someone's first post that is a slam....especially against a local company trying to make it.
OK...one last question about Tbe Best Stop in Scott La....
