Yuzu Tree in South Florida
I'm planning to go to Asian Festival at Fruit and Spice Park. They have all sorts of tropical fruit plants. I would check out there, plus Asian street food doesn't hurt! (I'm also looking for a plant).
Lunch on Las Olas
Wild East is pretty good. It's another take on Chinese food (along the line similar to P.F. Changs but better)
WOR cancels Michael Colameco's Food Talk
I'm a listener in S. Fla. So far Colameco is the best food host!
fort lauderdale- inexpensive restaurants
Zona Fresca for fish taco & burritos. http://www.zonafresca.com/
Thai Bayshore has better Thai than SukoThai. http://www.thaibayshore.com/
Tom Jenkins BBQ, sauce on the side for me (too sweet)
Lunch - Naples
Randy's Fishmarket on US 41. is excellent.http://randysfishmarketrestaurant.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=66
Miami Airport area
One hour is a little short plus Miami traffic. Check out OneBurger in the Gables.
When did Creolina's close?!
Walked by couple days ago. Took a peek though the storefront, eveything was gone....
I had such a good memory of the place...especially Rosie during the lunch shift! Where else can I get a decent crawfish, red bean & rice.
Recommendations in Ft. Lauderdale?
Greek Islands (A1A & Oakland Park Blvd.) is quite good (grilled lamb chops, gyros, fried calamari). If you go with meze type dishes the price will be very reasonable.
Zona Fresca for a quick lunch spot. Fish taco is excellent.
Gran Forno , Italian Bakery with fresh homemade sandwiches & pastries, on Las Olas is also a good lunch place. (limited seating but you can grab a to-go and have a picnic on the New River- walk down SE 15th Ave. to a nice park).
Capital Grille @ the Galleria Mall has a good deal on lunch.
Korean BBQ in Miami
Frod,
Thanks for thinking of me when you are ordering. I didn't do much adventurous eating this weekend, just sticked to the basic (Thai Bayshore & Zona Fresca).
Fyi, we were at Gabose a while back and it felt dirty. So we didn't go back since.
Korean BBQ in Miami
Where is Sakura? Do they have a grill installed at the table? How's their kalbi?
Fried Whole Belly Clams
Randy's Fish House (of US 41, near the Ritx Carlton hotel) in Naples has the fried whole belly clams. Excellent.
Sambal Aceh in S. Fla
Ican, I use Shark brand sriracha. I remembered this brand when I was in Thailand. In addition, its label is really cool 1950's design. Traditionally, sriracha is named after a seaside area in Thailand. The sauce is normally accompany seafood dishes. The most common dish with sriracha is panfried oyster.
Sambal Aceh in S. Fla
Thanks Keysrat, I have no problem getting sambal oelek (clear bottle with green cap). But, I'll check out CMC Co.
Sambal Aceh in S. Fla
Thank you Karma. Do you know the names of the groceries by any chance?
Sambal Aceh in S. Fla
Dear Hounds,
I'm looking for an Indonesian ingredient, hot sauce to be specific. It's called Sambal Aceh, it similar to Thai Siracha but not as smooth with stronger hint of garlic & sugar. I think it's going to be the next Siracha sauce. It's so good with seafood. I got my current supply from my brother EX-girlfriend, so it's a deadend.
I know they don't sell it in the typical Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese groceries. Please let me know if you have any leads.
Thanks,
Rimtalay
Two Bills Seafood - Dania Beach
We went there about a month ago (late in the afternoon). There were many coolers full of yellow tail snappers (looked very fresh). In addition, there were fresh golden crabs & shrimps. The place reminds me of Bahamas.
Miami - The River Oyster Bar
Thanks Frod. We always wanted to check it out...a nice meal before going to Tobacco Road for music.
IKEA- Sunrise area
Myung Ga in Weston is a very good Korean (no BBQ). It's couple exits south on I-75. I rather go there than any chain places.
Review- Armadillo Beach in Dania Beach
Excellent report Frod. It's down the street from us, definitely will check it out.
The Best Pork Dish in SoFla?
Let see, for me the roasted Berkshire pork at Michael's Genuine in the design district is pretty good. It's a nice twist on Chinese pork stew with five spice. It certainly brought back a memory of my childhood in Thailand.
Michael's Genuine - Miami Design District
We went to Michael's Genuine last Sat. night. We had wings, chips and onion dips, butter lettuce, yellow fin tartar, grilled whole pompano & goat cheese panna cotta. The food were excellent but I think the wings were a little under cooked, I also noticed sriracha & honey on the wings. The onion dip was awesome, I paired that with the Red Hook IPA. Everything went down nicely! I think the yellow fin tartar was a little mild. But the quality of the fish is undisputed, buttery! Pompano was perfectly grilled. My wife never had a pompano before & she loved it. Last but not least, goat cheese penna cotta was unusual but very good. I'll ordered it again.
Dogma in Fort Lauderdale
I don't think it worth a trip down to Ft. Laud. I think their dog is just OK. I'm still searching for a good dog joint like Katz Deli in NYC.
Two words: Natural Casing.
Joe's Stone Crab
Beautiful pictures. Can you tell me more about your camera & its setting, lens, etc. Your pictures look good enough to be in a foodie magazine.
My wife & I love Joe's. Take Away is great. Grab a couple orders of select claws and have a picnic at Government Cut. Fried chicken & lobster salad also very good.
Christine Lee's @ Gulfstream
My wife and I just went there 10/26 around 10pm. We had the appetizer plate, wonton soup & chicken lomein. So far, I think this is one of the best NY style Chinese I had so far. The appetizer plate had fried wings, egg roll, ribs, fantailed shrimps, & crab rangoon. The ribs had a fairly complex flavor of hoisin & 5 spice, very good. What a nice sampling! all the fried stuff were great. It's one of those fried food that the oil temp. was just right and everything is perfectly crispy without absorb the oil. The wonton soup was good, with a good size roasted pork in it. Tons of green onion. The lo mein was made from egg noodle (like tiny fectuccini) instead of the fat round noodle, very mild. I had to asked for hot pepper. The service was slow but people watching was amusing. Why rush through a meal!
S. Fla. Hound in Fort Worth/Dallas
I'm back in S. Fla. thank you for all the helps. I went to Railhead twice. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. The meats were dried and the sauce was too sweet. I think Goode Co. in Houston is better.
I also went to Taverna in Sundance Sq. I had a risotto with wild boar sausage & cranberries. The risotto was undercooked and crunchy. I had lunch a the Modern at Ft. Worth modern arts museum. The lunch was great, I had a roasted beef sandwich & coffee. Both were excellent.
Oishi Thai in Miami?
We went to Oishi Thai in North Miami Fri. night. We ordered fried stuffed shrimp, rock shrimp tempura and Thai geen curry. The service was good, however, the food needed a lot more improvement. First, the stuffed shrimp appitizer was very tough, the dough was way too thick. The dipping sauce supposed to be more like plum sauce but it was too vinegary. The second dish was rock shimp tempura, it was underwhelming, the fried part was good but the mayo base sauce didn't have the zink! that we used to at Nobu. At last the third dish, I was looking forward to this dish since it's kind of my soul food, the green curry. The curry was too sweet with very little spice. The place certainly didn't sautee the curry paste prior to add the coconut milk. As the result, the curry lacked the dept of flavor. I don't think making the curry sweet to please American palate help either.
Oishi Thai in Miami?
Thanks for the write up, Frod. I'll have to check it out. I have not had any Thai food in Dade Co. in a while. My wife is a big fan of Nobu's rock shrimp tempura.
I'll let you know how their Thai food taste. So far, from the restaurant website Thai menu looks fairly mainsteam.
S. Fla. Hound in Fort Worth/Dallas
Irod, thanks. Is the Korean place you mentioned is a Korean BBQ joint by any chance?
S. Fla. Hound in Fort Worth/Dallas
Dear Hounds,
I'm an adventureous eater. I'll be staying in Ft. Worth for a week. I used to live in College Station. So a good BBQ joint is a must. I'm looking for inexpensive to moderately expensive places. I can eat anything from BBQ to Korean and authentic ethenic places . I'll be hanging out with a college buddy so good watering holes probably not a bad idea, (single place for the buddy!).
Thank you,
Rimtalay
