Unfamiliar w/ SoCal, where to eat in Pasadena?

I second Saladang Song. I think it's amazing. I love the food and I LOVE the patio.

Dinner for 7 in Malibu or Santa Monica

I like the Lobster. I know some Chowhounders will disagree but I've always had great food, great service and it feels like a sunny California experience with and a lovely view. Yummy scallops.

This one's tough

I think Angelli Caffe would be my first choice too if they accomodated, but I went to a party at India's Oven on Beverly and everthing was fabulous. Are you paying or is everyone splitting? You could head to Farmer's Market and take over a big section. I was thinking initailly of the Indonesion place but there's not enough seating, but if everyone is chipping in, I'd just let everyone pick their food and alchohol, set up at a big table and finish with a Thee's princess cake. There's my birthday plan.

Dan Sungsa in K-town

The one time we went, I let the waiter order for us and I have no idea what kind of delicious dishes he ordered for us. I do remember some incredibly spicy and sweet ribs that we devoured. Can anyone recommend their favorite dishes there? Loved everything we ate. Thanks!

Good food in unlikely places

I also had a similar experience with Zen Zoo in Hollywood. We waited over an hour and a half for a table at Hungry Cat and just before I was going to fall over and die, we ended up at Zen Zoo for some tasty steamed bunds and dumplings and a killer molten chocolate cake. I'm still dreaming of that.

I also had surprisingly tasty chicken tacos at Pantry's Pizza on La Cienega near the 10. The pizza is really good for a little divey palce, but their tacos and salsa are great!

New to Mid City LA & need recs

I also think Chulada Grill is awful. For tacos, I head down to La Cienega near the 10 to a little place called Pantry's Pizza. It's in the mini-mall next to Yum Yum. It looks like nothing (and in fact, it's not really nice to sit and eat at) but they have great carnitas and chicken soft tacos. I've had the pizza and it's pretty good too. It's a bit sweet (kind of a lighter version of the Numero Uno crust.) but i'd go for the tacos.

I love the Urth cafe coffee (Beverly south of Wislhire or on Melrose/La Cienega). Sometimes hard to find a table but love the coffee.

Bread Bar on 3rd near La Cienega. Really good baked goods and coffee. Great sandwiches too. Kind of upscale kind of place, not really the kidn to sit with your laptop for a long time.

Hungry Cat: Disappointment #1

I don't know if I can stomach the wait. We went down on a Monday at 8:00 knowing that we didn't have a reservation, but the hostess on the phone said to come for the bar and didn't try to dissuade us at all. We waited for a full hour and all the hostess would say is "getting closer." By the end of the hour, we saw people having cocktails on the side patio and felt a bit snubbed. Who gets to have cocktails on the patio? When the hostess stopped wouldn't make eye contact anymore, we just left. It would have been better is she had said on the phone "We're so busy, there's very little chance of getting in." I never would have waited an hour. Soooooooo annoyed. Is the food that incredible?

Dan Sungsa in K-Town--what to order??

Loved Dan Sungsa for its funky atmosphere and super hot spicy ribs! We let the waiter order for us and he ordered us som good food, but pretty safe (chicken skewers, etc). What is good there? I walked around afterwards and looked at the platters of food people had--looked incredible but I have no idea what it all was.

Hungry Cat: hot or hyped?

Has anyone actually gotten in without a reservation? We were told on the phone that the bar was first come first serve and we could wait. We arrived at 8;00 and were told that it would be a 45 minute wait. We waited and waited until 9:00 when the hostess told us we were "getting there." ON a Monday! I couldn't believe it. Her attitude made me felt like she was the doorman at some hip club and I was not wearing the right boots. I would have rathered that the hostess tell us on the phone there was no chance rather than sit there for a full hour with no explanation, no attention, etc. I don't know if I could go through that again.

Beer Garden at New Otani in J-Town

Has anyone been? Is it good? Is it a cook on the table-top kind of thing? Expensive?

Casual dinner in Hollywood, West Hollywood? Extra points for good desserts

I'm looking for some great casual (meaning cheap-ish) places to go have dinner in the Hollywood, West Hollywood, Mid Wilshire areas. I'd consider Silverlake or Culver City but it'd have to be worth the drive. We always seem to end up eating Indonesian food at the Farmer's Market. We've been to Lucky Devils, Los Balcones del Peru, Newsroom, King's Road Cafe, Taste (oops--NOT cheap, but tasty and lovely atmosphere), Il Gelato, some places on Sawtelle. I should also mention that I'm Mexican and cook Mexican, so I'm not interested in that and my husband never feels like Korean food even though I keep pushing for it. Also, we love desserts. Extra points for good desserts. Thanks
