Coffee in Hotel Rooms

We often stay at hotels with in room coffee makers that use flat round filters filled with coffee. Unfortunately the coffee is sometimes really bad. Wondered if anyone had found a way to bring your own better coffee and still use their 2-4 cup coffee makers?

Kind Cafe in Boise

Anyone know what happened with the Kind Cafe? It was scheduled to open March 28 and now there is a sign in their door indicating they are moving a few doors down. The message went on to say the current location is rented to another restaurant.

Near Mendocino

I am hoping you can help me find a restaurant near Mendocino, CA. It was the next town over...family run...had photos all over the walls with pictures from their 1960's-19760's commune. We loved this place and hope to go back. I want to say they served three or four course meals.

Whole Foods and "donations"

Someone asked how the stores that ask for donations at their registers benefit. They benefit from the goodwill they create in the community by donating to local causes. In other words, the stores take credit for the generousity of their customers.

Food ideas near The Grove Hotel, Boise

Enbell has given you some of the best options for micro beers and food. It is difficult to add to that list. Other options for walkable restaurants if you want to branch out to places that are also good in downtown Boise include an Italian restaurant that I like a great deal...Alevita. It is owned by the same people as Fork and just down the street. Dish is also very good...also walkable.

Butter & Soy Sauce?

I read the article this morning and wondered about the recipe mentioned for beef satay with a soy butter sauce. I am making a pot roast tonight....any one have a suggestion of how I might use a soy-butter sauce? I was wondering if it could be spread on the roast before roasting or ?

Does Baker's Ammonia (Ammonium Carbonate) need a hecsher?

My mother used to purchase it at a pharmacy. She made an old German cookie recipe with it.

Do you think tartar sauce is gross?

Love it...especially the recipe I use from a hotel in Chicago. Made with dill pickle, onions and capers.

Cooking a pot roast

I am cooking a small chuck pot roast. Most recipes call for a 4 lb roast...mine is only two. Cooks magazine indicates you cook tightly covered in a slow oven for 3 or 4 hours. Should I reduce the time for my small roast?

Lunch near Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

Checked the menu's for all and have to admit they all look good...leaning towards Double Dragon if the weather is good for walking...Produce Row if it isn't. Thanks...these were all new to me.

Staying at the Hotel Monaco and taking public transportation to the OMSI to see the Sherlock Holmes exhibit. Any suggestions for lunch within walking distance from the museum?

Restaurant Week in Boise

Restaurant Week started this week in Boise and goes through November 9. Had a really nice lunch at Angells. Soup and a choice of entree. I had fish and chips and my friend had the chicken salad. Both were very good and the broccoli soup was excellent. Lunch was $10 a person...such a nice deal. There are around 15 restaurants participating...planning on trying a few more this week.

So what do you do with all the leftover halloween candies?

The guys who delivered my new frig were happy to take them off my hands...gave them a shopping bag to cart them off with.

As a kid, did you spend your pocket money on food?

Stopped an excellent bakery on my way home for school. Cookies, cupcakes, mini tarts...always preferred these to candy.

Make ahead dinner rolls or biscuits for Thanksgiving

Bernard Clayton's Complete Book of Small Breads has a recipe for Whole Wheat Icebox Rolls that can be made several days ahead and then shaped, allowed to rise, and baked. Nice to have freshly baked rolls...and so little effort when you are busy preparing other dishes.

A few nice places that serve bread and butter with the meal - no charge.

Agree...there is something nice about offering bread before a meal. Crescent Dragonwaggon's restaurant in Dairy Hollow, Arkansas served a bread basket with three special kinds of bread....always thought this was so wonderful. Her cookbooks provided many of the recipes she used.

Tipping delivery or take out. Do you? How much?

Delivery 10% with a $5 minimum. Takeout 0 unless they did something special (delivered to my car, packed plates and napkins, etc.) then $1-2 dollars.

Lunch near the Detroit Insitiute of Arts

Bringing another couple with us from Boise Idaho for a weekend in Detroit later this month. I haven't lived there in ten years so I would greatly appreciate a nice recommendation for lunch near the DIA. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Suggestions and Tricks to put together a polished professional meal.

Include several dishes that are completed in advance. I had a summer vegetable ceviche ready and refrigerated four hours ahead of time...couscous which takes minutes to prepare and almond cake with berries ready to assemble. Made the grilling of swordfish a non-issue as everything else was done or close to done.

X-Detroiter Coming Home

Looking forward to spending Labor Day weekend in my hometown. Staying at the Rencen to be close to the Jazz Festival and Comerica and the Tigers vs Indians game Friday night. Plan to have dinner one night at the Rattlesnake Club. Seeking suggestions for lunch near the DIA, dinner one night in Greektown, and any other places you recommend a walk or short cab ride from Hart Plaza. Is there any really good Middle Eastern downtown or would we need to go to Dearborn?

Detroit dining downtown

I too am spending some time in Detroit, in my case over Labor Day. Plan to go to the Jazz Festival and catch a Tigers game. I was leaning towards the Rattlesnake Club for one dinner before a late Jazz Festival concert. I have had great meals there in the past and the view of the river and Windsor is really nice. Have two more dinners to plan and a few lunches. Thought about Slows for lunch and now that I see the postings...Roast. Hope more Detroiters offer ideas as it has been three or four years since I have been there.
